OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis and management of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) depend heavily on imaging modalities that repeatedly expose patients to ionizing radiation. There is limited literature on cumulative radiation exposure in this patient population, which is a problem compounded by wide variation among institutions. The present study quantifies the cumulative cranial exposure to ionizing radiation resulting from diagnostic medical imaging and medical procedures during initial hospitalization for ruptured aSAH at a single academic institution and estimates the risk of future adverse

A complex cascade of systemic and tissue-specific responses induced by exposure to ionizing radiation can lead to functional impairment over time in the surviving population. Current methods for management of survivors of unintentional radiation exposure episodes rely on monitoring individuals over time for the development of adverse clinical symptoms due to the lack of predictive biomarkers for tissue injury. In this study, we report on changes in metabolomic and lipidomic profiles in multiple tissues of nonhuman primates (NHPs) that received either 4.0 Gy or 5.8 Gy total-body irradiation (TB

STUDY DESIGN: Quality improvement project.
OBJECTIVES: Reduce the amount of radiation exposure in the pediatric trauma population 5 years of age and older in relation to cervical spine clearance.
BACKGROUND: The evaluation of pediatric cervical spine injuries must be accurate and timely to avoid missed injuries. The difficult clinical examination in pediatric trauma patients necessitates the use of radiologic examinations to avoid missing catastrophic injuries. However, exposure to radiation at an early age increases the pediatric patients' risk of developing cancer (R. A. ).
METHODS: A ret

BACKGROUND: During structural heart disease procedures, interventional echocardiographers are exposed to high doses of radiation, particularly in their right waist and lower body regions. Currently, no radiation shields that are practical for use during transesophageal echocardiography are available.
OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to develop a novel radiation shield that enables interventional echocardiographers to perform transesophageal echocardiography with minimal radiation exposure during structural heart disease procedures.
METHODS: A shape prototype model, including a freestanding radi

Environmental health monitoring and surveillance include activities such as collection of information on the production and use of chemicals; preparation of inventories of waste discharges; measurement of physical, chemical and biological agents in air, water and food, at work place and at home; epidemiological investigations, and collection and analysis of environmental, and health statistical data. There are two main objectives of these activities: estimation of human exposure to potentially harmful environmental factors and timely detection of adverse health effects; and the assessment of e

The theory of chemical radiculitis had been put forward about 30 years ago, but as yet it has not been proved by clinical studies. The aim of the current studies was to determine whether the annular tear of a painful disc proved by discography is the cause of radiating leg pain (radiculopathy) in patients with discogenic low back pain. Forty-two patients with discogenic low back pain at single disc level with concomitant radiating leg pain were studied in order to analyse the relationship between site of annular tear and side of radiating leg pain. Electromyogram and motor nerve conduction vel

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing cancer treatment by radiation therapy commonly develop Candida albicans infections (candidiasis). Such infections are generally treated by antifungals that unfortunately also induce numerous secondary effects in the patient. Additional to the effect on the immune system, ionizing radiation influences the vital activity of C. albicans cells themselves; however, the reaction of C. albicans to ionizing radiation acting simultaneously with antifungals is much less well documented. In this study, we explored the effects of ionizing radiation and an antifungal drug

INTRODUCTION: Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with 177Lu-DOTATATE has become an established treatment for somatostatin receptor-positive neuroendocrine tumors. However, the safety of performing emergency surgery during the early post-treatment period remains unclear, given concerns regarding radiation exposure and potential contamination. We report a case of acute appendicitis requiring emergency surgery shortly after PRRT, with a focus on perioperative radiation safety.

Radiation reduction in the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory is well-suited for targeted quality improvement (QI) interventions. Transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure was chosen for this QI project based on a homogenous procedural population and inter-operator variability in radiation usage, with the aim to reduce radiation exposure during ASD device closure by 50% over 1 year. The aim for this project was defined and a Key Driver Diagram (KDD) was created with three domains for change: modification of procedural practice, reporting and monitoring/feedback, and team engag

BACKGROUND: Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs), known as liquid biopsies, continue to be developed as diagnostic and prognostic markers for a wide variety of cancer indications, mainly due to their minimally invasive nature and ability to offer a wide range of phenotypic and genetic information. While liquid biopsies maintain significant promising benefits, there is still limited information regarding the kinetics of ctDNA and CTCs following radiation therapy which remains a vital treatment modality in head and neck cancers. This study aims to describe

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains one of the most common and challenging intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired infections, significantly contributing to mortality, morbidity, and healthcare costs. The diagnosis relies on quantitative analysis of a deep microbiological sample; a combination of clinical and radiological signs is commonly used to raise VAP suspicion in clinical practice. Traditional imaging methods such as chest radiography and computed tomography have limitations in critically ill patients under mechanical ventilation. Lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged in the last years

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced skin injury is a common complication that seriously affects the follow-up treatment and life quality of tumor patients. Nocardia rubra cell-wall skeleton (N-CWS) has been reported to have pro-angiogenesis effects, and its role on RISI remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate its effect on repair of radiation induced skin injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After exposure to 45 Gy X-rays, the irradiated areas of SD rats were treated by N-CWS every 3 days. The radioprotective effects of N-CWS were evaluated by body weight changes, skin scores, H&E staining

This study investigated incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of post-radiation sarcoma, a rare but severe complication following radiotherapy. Post-radiation sarcoma is a malignant tumor arising within irradiated areas after a latency period, histologically different from the primary tumor. We retrospectively analyzed cases from January 2000 to January 2025 at three institutions in Japan, employing widely accepted diagnostic criteria. Patient characteristics, treatment details, oncologic outcomes, and prognostic factors were evaluated. Our study included 14 patients with various p

The aim of this study was to assess the long-term asymptomatic effects of low-dose radiation on microvascular structure among interventional physicians, whose hands are exposed to ionizing radiation during daily practice. The study, approved by the national ethics committee, included 186 radiation-exposed (surgeons, cardiologists, radiologists) and 35 unexposed physicians, all of whom had provided written consent. The subjects completed a questionnaire describing their current and past daily practice, from which tentative estimates of current and cumulative radiation exposure estimates were co

PURPOSE: Computed tomography (CT) plays a central role in oncologic imaging, yet repeated examinations contribute substantially to cumulative radiation exposure. This study aimed to evaluate inter- and intra-individual radiation dose variability in chest and abdominal CT and the impact of CT device model and protocol standardization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 42441 CT scans from 4986 adult oncologic patients were analyzed. Dose metrics (CTDIvol, DLP, SSDE, effective dose) were extracted using automated dose monitoring. Inter- and intra-individual radiat

To investigate and monitor the progression of scoliosis and other spinal deformities in patients following idiopathic scoliosis (IS), non-invasive and radiation-free techniques are recommended because of the need for repeated radiographs. In a clinical setting, spine parameters can be quickly, cheaply and easily assessed using rasterstereography (RS). To assess the validity of the radiation-free technique RS based on surface topography compared with radiographs. MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library and EMBASE were systematically searched for studies which investigate the validity of rasterstereograph
