Phylogenomics and evolution of the Lauraceae based on targeted capture data.

The family Lauraceae, a hyper-diverse magnoliid family comprising approximately 63 genera and over 3,000 species, plays a key ecological role in tropical and subtropical forests. Yet deep relationships among its nine tribes remain unresolved, likely due to limited sampling and complex evolutionary processes such as incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow. To address these challenges, we generated datasets of 255 single-copy nuclear genes and chloroplast genomes using a newly designed Lauraceae-specific probe set, achieving the most comprehensive genus-level sampling (84%) to date. Personality traits, sensation seeking, and cycling safety outcomes: A multi-country study.

INTRODUCTION: While the role of personality in shaping behavior and safety has been widely documented across domains, its study among cyclists has remained limited. Traditional trait-based approaches may also fall short in predicting real behaviors, which highlights the need to explore additional factors. AIMS: This research examined associations between personality traits, cycling behaviors, and self-reported crashes, and tested the predictive role of sensation seeking (SS), an emerging construct in cycling safety, on risky and protective behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was cond

Do inexperienced nurses in the lactation period experience workplace violence? A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Among clinical healthcare personnel, nurses face the highest proportion of workplace violence, which has a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being as well as their personal and professional lives. However, little is known about the effects of workplace violence on inexperienced breastfeeding nurses and their experiences during and after breastfeeding when they return to work. This study aimed to explore the experiences of inexperienced breastfeeding nurses who encountered workplace violence and its resulting impacts. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive

French Military Neurosurgery: At Home and Abroad.

The origins of military neurosurgery are closely linked to those of neurosurgery in France and more particularly in Paris. The history of the field starts with its origins by 2 men, Thierry de Martel and Clovis Vincent. The first note about the creation of military neurosurgery was in 1942, when Marcel David was reassigned from the Sainte Anne Hospital to practice at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital. David trained the first military neurosurgeon. The field of military neurosurgery was subsequently developed at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital, at Sainte Anne Military Teaching Hospital in T

The role of prison officers' regulation of inmates affect on their exposure to violent behaviours and the development of PTSD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Interactions with inmates are a major source of stress for prison officers. Given the conflicting nature of this relationship, violent behaviours towards prison officers are not uncommon, posing a threat to their psychological well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study analyses the role that the strategies prison officers use to regulate inmates' emotions have on the frequency of inmates' violent behaviour and on the presence of posttraumatic stress symptoms in prison officers. Based on interactional models of emotional regulation, a model is proposed in which interpersonal regulation has

Sources of stress in the practice of psychiatry: perspective from the Arab world.

The main challenges faced by psychiatrists in the Arab world are stigma, shortage of resources, role of the family and effects of conflicts and migration. Psychiatrists practising in this region have to adapt to these challenges and use creative methods to provide a good service to their patients. A woman in her mid-20s presented to a private psychiatric out-patient clinic with a longstanding obsessive-compulsive disorder of contamination. She had fled her home country with her family because of an ongoing armed conflict. They were under temporary 'visitor' visas and the possibility of their s

[Stressors in health occupations. Do females have a greater health risk?].

Stressors and health risks in medical professions are still largely ignored. A survey on different studies in nurses, students, doctors and dentists by this author is compared to results of other authors. Special attention is given to role-strain and health risks of women in health jobs. In nursing attention and care for patients is the most important stressor, followed by team conflicts, insecurity, lack of autonomy, workload and authority conflicts. Burnout is the most important shortterm health risk, longterm consequences are scarcely researched. Where direct comparison was studied nurses n

[The expectations of families in Ehpad].

Taking into account the needs and expectations of families in residential care facilities for the dependent elderly (Ehpad) leads to their satisfaction with the care given to their institutionalized relative. A relational charter participate to prevent conflicts and misunderstandings between the various formal (caregivers) and informal (families) care providers at the bedside of residents. Families must feel invited to the Ehpad and recognized in their place in their role of care, at least relational. Some families, however, remain firmly anchored in an irrefragable hostility. Chromosome anomalies as predictors of recurrence risk for spontaneous abortion.

Reproductive histories and chromosomes of spontaneous abortions were studied by segregation analysis in 1890 sibships ascertained through a cytogenetically studied abortion. Normal karyotypes are associated with recurrent abortion. Among abnormal karyotypes, trisomy has an elevated recurrence risk even after adjustment through a liability indicator for maternal age. Possible mechanisms and conflicting evidence in the literature on trisomy are discussed. None of these differences in recurrence risk is large enough to play a significant numerical role in genetic counseling.

Hepassocin (FGL-1) as a Hepatokine in Liver Physiology and Metabolic Dysfunction: A Narrative Review.

Hepassocin, also known as fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL-1), is a liver-derived secretory protein initially identified as a mitogenic factor involved in hepatocyte proliferation and liver regeneration. Increasing evidence has subsequently suggested that FGL-1 functions as a hepatokine linking hepatic metabolic stress to systemic metabolic regulation. Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that circulating FGL-1 levels are associated with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Mechanistical

Regulatory logic of endogenous RNAi in silencing de novo genomic conflicts.

Although the biological utilities of endogenous RNAi (endo-RNAi) have been largely elusive, recent studies reveal its critical role in the non-model fruitfly Drosophila simulans to suppress selfish genes, whose unchecked activities can severely impair spermatogenesis. In particular, hairpin RNA (hpRNA) loci generate endo-siRNAs that suppress evolutionary novel, X-linked, meiotic drive loci. The consequences of deleting even a single hpRNA (Nmy) in males are profound, as such individuals are nearly incapable of siring male progeny. Here, comparative genomic analyses of D. simulans and D. melano

Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus in Patients With Prediabetes.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in patients with diabetes. Consequently, as antidiabetic medications have demonstrated cardiovascular benefit, cardiologists have been asked to weigh in regarding antidiabetic therapy. The cardiologist's role will continue to grow as antidiabetic agents with cardiovascular benefit are being studied in prediabetes as part of an evolving clinical environment. Still, current guidelines primarily recommend high-intensity lifestyle intervention or metformin for diabetes prevention. Considering that many patients cared for by a cardiologist will hav

Childhood adversity, recent life stressors and suicidal behavior in Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: Although the independent effects of childhood adversities and of recent negative events on suicidality have been well-documented, the combinative role of childhood and recent adversities on risk for suicidality is still underexplored, especially in the context of Chinese culture and in consideration of specific types of negative events. METHOD: 5989 students, randomly sampled from six universities in central China, completed the online survey for this study. Suicidal behavior, life adversity during childhood and stressful events in recent school life were assessed with designed qu

Genetic susceptibility to malignant pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos-associated diseases.

Exposure to asbestos fibers is a major risk factor for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), lung cancer, and other non-neoplastic conditions, such as asbestosis and pleural plaques. However, in the last decade many studies have shown that polymorphism in the genes involved in xenobiotic and oxidative metabolism or in DNA repair processes may play an important role in the etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases. To evaluate the association between diseases linked to asbestos and genetic variability we performed a review of studies on this topic included in the PubMed database. One hundred

The complexity of reproductive decision-making in asymptomatic carriers of the Huntington mutation.

The aim of this study was to describe reproductive decisions in mutation carriers after predictive testing for Huntington's disease (HD) and to identify factors that play a role in decision-making. In 1987-2004, 245 individuals received a predictive test result; 89 of them were carriers and seven received an equivocal result. Quantitative data on reproductive behaviour have been collected during all follow-up contacts. The follow-up time in this study was 1-16 years (mean: 7.1 years). Qualitative data on reproductive decision-making have been collected by the means of semistructured interviews

Nutrients with immune-modulating effects: what role should they play in the intensive care unit?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will summarize recent clinical and experimental data on the use of immune-modulating nutrients in critical illness. It will present the concept of these nutrients as pharmacologic agents or 'nutraceuticals' administered in addition to protein, calorie, vitamin, and trace element sources. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have defined the physiologic roles of arginine in critical illness, such as its role as a precursor for the production of nitric oxide. Investigations have determined that, in critical illness, glutamine levels decrease and severe glutamine deficiency is

Population-based assessment of human security indicators to determine progress on the Ukrainian National Action Plan.

INTRODUCTION: Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukrainian Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan (NAP) has become extremely important in creating conditions for the participation of both women and men in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, recovery, in addressing security challenges and systemic responses to conflict-related violence including sexual violence, in alignment with United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325. NAPs are more effective when they have broad population acceptance. This paper introduces a structured method for eva
