INTRODUCTION: The study aims to demonstrate non-inferior clinical success (safety and efficacy) of the MOTUS Total Joint Replacement device relative to posterior or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion with respect to a composite endpoint. The primary hypothesis for this study is that the probability of achieving 24-month composite clinical success (CCS) for subjects receiving the investigational device is not clinically inferior to the probability of achieving 24-month CCS for subjects receiving lumbar interbody fusion collected in a separate real-world evidence (RWE) study.

Syndesmotic malreduction remains a major contributor to poor outcomes after ankle injuries, yet conventional fixation methods rely primarily on fluoroscopic assessment and may not fully reveal rotational or subtle translational malalignment. Needle arthroscopy offers direct visualization of the distal tibiofibular interval, enabling precise assessment of the injury and real-time confirmation of reduction. This surgical technique describes a fully arthroscopic approach to anatomic reduction and dynamic stabilization of the syndesmosis using a suture button device. After arthroscopic identificat

Our objective was to determine factors associated with complications of Ilizarov external ring fixator surgery for foot and ankle disorders in persons with diabetes mellitus. We reviewed the records of patients who underwent Charcot foot reconstruction or soft tissue offloading surgery over 1 year at a single institution. We compared the association of serious pin tract infection, pin fracture, and surgical wound dehiscence with the patient age, weight, duration device was used, preoperative glucose, preoperative hemoglobin, tourniquet time, and total operating time. Fifteen patients (16 limbs

A 77-year-old woman with a slightly displaced intertrochanteric two-fragment fracture of the left hip was treated by internal fixation using a screw-nail device (gamma nail). After the operation she became hemodynamically unstable, and ultrasound revealed a large retroperitoneal fluid accumulation in the left lower abdomen. A contrast computed tomogram revealed active hemorrhage next to the quadrilateral surface of the left acetabulum. Selective angiography and embolization were immediately initiated and stopped the bleeding. However, despite the successful treatment of the retroperitoneal hem

Numerous operative techniques have been described for acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction for the treatment of acromioclavicular joint instability. Injuries of this nature are commonly sustained by contact-sport athletes in high-impact collisions or falls. Traumatic injury to the acromioclavicular joint and ligamentous structures can range in severity, as can the degree of subsequent joint instability. Injuries classified between Type I and Type III are generally treated nonoperatively, whereas Type-IV injuries may be treated similarly to the treatment described in t

Management of bisphosphonate-associated subtrochanteric fractures remains opinion- or consensus-based. There are limited data regarding the outcomes of this fracture. We retrospectively reviewed 33 consecutive female patients with a mean age of 67.5 years (47 to 91) who were treated surgically between May 2004 and October 2009. The mean follow-up was 21.7 months (0 to 53). Medical records and radiographs were reviewed to determine the post-operative ambulatory status, time to clinical and radiological union and post-fixation complications such as implant failure and need for second surgery. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Hip dysfunction in young population caused by developmental dysplasia of the hip, congenital hip deformity or femur head necrosis severely affect the quality of life of young patients, and total hip replacement is the current widely accepted standard therapy for hip function reconstruction in adults, but not for young patients. Alternative safe and effective surgical method for hip function preservation/reconstruction for young patients is lacking. Ilizarov hip reconstruction osteotomy was an alternative method for preserving hip function but the surgical procedures were

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) often rely on long-term cardiac pacemaker therapy, which can lead to late complications. This case highlights the management of pacemaker lead decubitus in a patient with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 71-year-old woman with advanced skin erosion over her pacemaker site. She underwent surgical repair of Tetralogy of Fallot in 1967. In 1977, she was diagnosed with complete heart block and received an abdominal epicardial VVI pacemaker. In 1996, skin perforation occurred at t

BACKGROUND Treating advanced finger joint contractures from Dupuytren disease remains a challenge. We evaluated the effectiveness of a skeletal distraction device versus alternative treatment options. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed the surgical treatment of contracted finger joints in stage III and stage IV Dupuytren's disease over a 10-year period. Data were obtained from inpatient and outpatient medical records, including postoperative clinical examinations and extended Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire scores. Complications of infection, postoperative pain,

INTRODUCTION: Mallet fractures are avulsions of the terminal extensor tendon from the base of the distal phalangeal bone with a bony fragment. Surgical treatment, which provides accurate anatomical reduction and rigid fixation, is recommended for mallet fractures with involvement of more than one third of the base of the distal phalangeal bone. Various surgical methods have been reported, but there is still no standard treatment modality. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the results of our modified tenodesis method for mallet fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using our method,

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic patients with severe brachymetatarsia are commonly treated with callus distraction using external mini-fixator (EF) or internal device (ID). This study points out advantages and limitations of both methods comparing clinical and radiographical parameters.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 21 metatarsal bones in twelve patients. Twelve metatarsals were treated with ID (Genos Mini), nine with EF (MiniRail).
RESULTS: Mean lengthening distance was 17.3 mm using EF and 11.7 mm using ID (p = 0.016). Adverse results were observed in 89% of metatarsals treated with EF and in

Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness, primarily affecting the facial, shoulder, and upper arm muscles. In this literature review, we examined the available treatments for FSHD, covering established methods and experimental approaches. We began with an overview of pharmacological treatments, emphasizing the importance of physical therapy and rehabilitation in maintaining muscle strength, improving mobility, preventing contractures, and respiratory therapy for severe cases. We also explored exercise interventions, addres

A traumatic chest wall injury is a condition that is often encountered in medical practice, but the underlying pathophysiology varies widely depending on the circumstances of the injury and the patient's background. The chest wall, which protects vital organs and provides respiratory movement, can be a life-threatening emergency when injured, thus it is important to respond promptly and appropriately. Because a penetrating chest wall trauma is often associated with intra-thoracic organ damage, it is important to consider an emergency thoracotomy in cases involving massive hemorrhage or air lea

Post-traumatic osteomyelitis (PTO) is a worldwide problem in the field of orthopaedic trauma. So far, there is no ideal treatment or consensus-based gold standard for its management. This paper reviews the representative literature focusing on PTO, mainly from the following four aspects: (1) the pathophysiological mechanism of PTO and the interaction mechanism between bacteria and the body, including fracture stress, different components of internal fixation devices, immune response, occurrence and development mechanisms of inflammation in PTO, as well as the occurrence and development mechani

Biodegradable fixation devices made of the polymers polylactide, polyglycolide and their copolymers are used routinely during maxillofacial, craniofacial, and orthopedic reconstructive surgical procedures, thanks to their property of biodegradation that avoid the need for implant removal. In particular, they are used in the treatment of craniosynostosis in pediatric patients affected by Pfeiffer syndrome, where the resorption time of 1 year or less does not interfere with the normal growth of the skull. To study the mechanism how polylactide-polyglycolide (PLPG) acid plates can induce osteobla

Modern missiles cause important damage in the tissues. In case of bone injury, apart from the presence of foreign bodies and soil dirt in the foyer, the lesion is characterized by a certain instability caused by the smashing and resulting in the comminutive fractures, as well as severe lesions of the soft tissues. If primary treatment includes the necessity of a large wound excision, of which the modalities have been described for centuries, it also includes a rigorous immobilization of the foyer as precaution against shock and infection. All techniques proposed during former conflicts proved

A retrospective-prospective descriptive and comparative study of two sternal closure techniques in a population of 621 patients divided into: group A, steel band closure (n=300) and group B, conventional technique closure (n=321), was carried out between January 2005 and December 2007 in order to describe and compare the results of both techniques in high-risk patients for sternal dehiscence and mediastinitis. Differences between both groups and association with risk factors were obtained using non-parametric tests for statistical analysis. No complications or mortality related to the use of t

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are one of the most common injuries. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are the most diffused between surgical treatments. Carbon-fiber reinforced (CFR) polyetheretherketone (PEEK) plates have been proposed to prevent effects linked to stainless steel or titanium alloy traditional plates, such as radio-opacity, mismatch of bone-plate elasticity modulus, corrosion, limited fatigue life, osseointegration.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to evaluate the actual safety and reliability of CFR- PEEK plates to treat distal radius fractures.
METHODS: Electro
