Thermal Transport and Rheological Properties of Hybrid Nanofluids Based on Vegetable Lubricants.

Nanofluids based on vegetal oil with different wt.% of carbon nanotubes (CNT), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and its hybrid (h-BN@CNT) were produced to investigate the effects of these nano-additives on the thermal conductivity and rheological properties of nanofluids. Stable suspensions of these oil/nanostructures were produced without the use of stabilizing agents. The dispersed nanostructures were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, while the thermal conductivity and rheological characteristics were studied by a transient hot-wire method and steady-state flow tests, respectively. Exposure to Fumes of a Vegetable Margarine for Frying: Respiratory Effects in an Experimental Model.

Deep frying is one of the strongest emission sources into indoor air. A vegetable margarine has recently been used in commercial kitchens. This study investigated the respiratory effects of exposure to its fumes in an experimental model. A setup with glass chambers was constructed. A chamber housed a fryer. The fumes were transported to the other chamber where 24 Wistar albino rats were placed in four randomized groups: acute, subacute, chronic, and control for the exposure durations. PM10 concentration in the exposure chamber was monitored to ensure occupational levels were obtained. Sacrific

Septic Shock Secondary to Tricuspid Valve Vegetation Requiring Surgical Debulking.

Tricuspid valve endocarditis is increasing in incidence owing to the prevalent use of intravenous substances. Although most patients respond well to intravenous antibiotics over the course of six weeks, some patients require surgical intervention. A multilayered approach to diagnosis with both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is recommended for optimal diagnosis and management. In this article, we report a case of septic shock resulting from tricuspid valve infective endocarditis in a young woman with a history of intravenous drug use who ultimately required cardiothora

Intelligent detection for fresh-cut fruit and vegetable processing: Imaging technology.

Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables are healthy and convenient ready-to-eat foods, and the final quality is related to the raw materials and each step of the cutting unit. It is necessary to integrate suitable intelligent detection technologies into the production chain so as to inspect each operation to ensure high product quality. In this paper, several imaging technologies that can be applied online to the processing of fresh-cut products are reviewed, including: multispectral/hyperspectral imaging (M/HSI), fluorescence imaging (FI), X-ray imaging (XRI), ultrasonic imaging, thermal imaging (TI)…

Challenging Case of Marantic Tricuspid Endocarditis Treated With Percutaneous Vegetation Debulking.

Marantic endocarditis is a rare entity often diagnosed in the setting of advanced malignant disease. We present the case of a 66-year-old man with stage IVb non-small cell lung cancer, with large tricuspid and small aortic valve vegetations. A multidisciplinary team determined the patient to be a poor surgical candidate, but given the likelihood of pulmonary and systemic embolization, an intervention was required. We proposed AngioVac-assisted vegetation debulking of the tricuspid valve to be the best approach in consideration of the small aortic valve vegetation and lung cancer. He successful

Tricuspid Valve Blood Cysts Mimicking Thrombus or Vegetation on Echocardiogram in a Neonate.

A 2-month-old male infant, born premature with a birth weight of 865 g, was found to have a tricuspid valve mass mimicking thrombus and vegetation by echocardiogram on the fourth day of life. The patient was treated with antibiotics and anticoagulation with no change in the size of the mass on serial follow-up echocardiography. The patient died of severe pulmonary vein stenosis and complex neurological disability. Postmortem cardiac examination revealed numerous cardiac blood cysts with two dominant ones (1.6 and 1.5 mm) on the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve, which based on the location

Hot stuff in the bushes: Thermal imagers and the detection of burrows in vegetated sites.

Thermal imaging technology is a developing field in wildlife management. Most thermal imaging work in wildlife science has been limited to larger ungulates and surface-dwelling mammals. Little work has been undertaken on the use of thermal imagers to detect fossorial animals and/or their burrows. Survey methods such as white-light spotlighting can fail to detect the presence of burrows (and therefore the animals within), particularly in areas where vegetation obscures burrows. Thermal imagers offer an opportunity to detect the radiant heat from these burrows, and therefore the presence of the

Inhalation of hydrogenated vegetable oil combustion exhaust and genotoxicity responses in humans.

Biofuels from vegetable oils or animal fats are considered to be more sustainable than petroleum-derived diesel fuel. In this study, we have assessed the effect of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) exhaust on levels of DNA damage in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as primary outcome, and oxidative stress and inflammation as mediators of genotoxicity. In a randomized cross-over study, healthy humans were exposed to filtered air, inorganic salt particles, exhausts from combustion of HVO in engines with aftertreatment [i.e. emission with nitrogen oxides and low amounts of particulate ma

Isolation and Evaluation of Anti-Listeria Lactococcus lactis from Vegetal Sources.

This chapter describes methods used to isolate, identify, and partially characterize lactic acid bacteria (LAB) which exhibit inhibitory activity against Listeria monocytogenes from foods. Vegetal (plant based) sources are rich in naturally occurring LAB and therefore provide an easily accessible source of strains with potential antimicrobial activity for use in food-processing applications. From our previous work, the majority of LAB with inhibitory activity against L. monocytogenes were identified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) Lactococcus lactis. Although these bacteria are most com

Vegetable Intake at Breakfast and Associated Factors among Young Adults in Japan.

In Japan, the amount of vegetable intake in young adults, especially at breakfast, is low. We aimed to examine the factors associated with vegetable intake at breakfast among young adults. In 2016, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted at a Japanese university. The questionnaire measured the frequency of ≥70 g vegetable intake at breakfast, lifestyle, eating habits, environmental factors, knowledge and attitudes (including the variable "Perceived behavior control (PBC)", from the Theory of Planned Behavior). The data of 1,455 male students who usually ate breakfast were analyz

Fate and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes on microplastics in facility vegetable soil.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) coexist widely in farmland soils, but the fate and abundance of ARGs on MPs is rarely explored. In this study, high-throughput fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to determine ARGs on MPs in facility vegetable soil. The results indicated that when the particle size of the MPs was larger, the weathering was more serious, or the MPs came from soils with a long vegetable cultivation period, the levels of antibiotics and heavy metals on the MPs were higher. The distribution of the detected ARGs types on distinct MPs

Simultaneous migration of bisphenol compounds and trace metals in canned vegetable food.

For the very first time, this study investigates the simultaneous migration of several metals and bisphenol compounds from coated tinplate cans into vegetable foods highly consumed worldwide. The role played by heat treatment, food type and brand, storage conditions, can denting and cooking food directly in cans is also assessed. Migration of bisphenol compounds (only BPA and BADGE·2H2O detected) was mainly affected by sterilization, whereas metal release was greatly influenced by storage. Based on a Principal Component Analysis different migration pattern groups were highlighted: BPA and Zn (

Deep Vegetal Foreign Bodies in Cats: A Retrospective Study of 10 Cases.

The aim of this study was to describe the anatomic locations and treatments available for deeply located vegetal foreign bodies in cats. Ten cases of migrating vegetal foreign bodies (vFBs) requiring surgical removal are reported. The diagnoses of vFBs in the thoracic cavity (4/10), retroperitoneal space (2/10), and paratracheal region (1/10) were obtained by ultrasound examination; however, in the perineum or penile urethra (2/10) and peritoneum (1/10), the vFBs were found during surgery. Intraoperative ultrasound guidance helped remove vFBs from the retroperitoneal space and paratracheal tis

Vegetative Endocarditis due to Staphylococcus aureus in an Umbrella Cockatoo (Cacatua alba).

A 15-year-old, female cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was presented with a history of intermittent cloacal prolapse of 1-year duration. After each prolapse, the owner would digitally reduce the distended cloacal tissue within approximately 12-24 hours, for short-term resolution. The cockatoo was examined 3 times over a 7-month period and received supportive care with leuprolide acetate, behavioral modification, and diet change. After the third examination, the owner decided to proceed with a surgical cloacopexy. Five days after the last examination and before the procedure was scheduled, the cockatoo

How often is the diagnosis of the permanent vegetative state incorrect? A review of the evidence.

Some research suggests that 40% of people in the vegetative state are misdiagnosed. This review investigates the frequency, nature and causes of reported misdiagnosis of patients in the vegetative state, focusing on the nature of the error. It is a systematic review of all relevant literature, using references from key papers identified. The data are summarized in tables. Five clinical studies of the rate of misdiagnosis in practice were identified, encompassing 236 patients in the vegetative state of whom 80 (34%) were reclassified as having some awareness, often minimal. The studies often in

Influence of vegetation type and temperature on the performance of constructed wetlands for nutrient removal.

In this study, the influence of vegetation type and environmental temperature on performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) was investigated. Results of vegetation types indicated that the removal of most nutrients in polyculture was greater than those in monoculture and unplanted control. The greatest removal percentages of NH4+-N, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in polyculture were 98.7%, 98.5%, and 92.6%, respectively. In experiments of different temperatures, the removal percentages of NH4+-N, NO3--N, TN and TP in all CWs tended to decrease with the decline of temperature. Esp

A vegetable-induced hemolytic crisis in a G6PD deficient person: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis can occur in people with G6PD deficiency under oxidative stress. Acalypha indica is a tropical plant used as a medicinal plant as well as a vegetable. There are a few reported cases of Acalypha indica ingestion induced hemolysis in G6PD deficient people. All except one of them are from Sri Lanka. The information available at present (2017) about G6PD deficiency prevalence and variants of the G6PD gene among Sri Lankans is very sparse. There are no past reports on hemolytic crisis in a G6PD deficient person presenting mimicking leptospirosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-a
