The ability to recognize speakers by their voice despite acoustical variation plays a substantial role in primate social interactions. Although neurons in the macaque anterior temporal lobe (ATL) show invariance to face viewpoint, whether they also encode abstract representations of caller identity is not known. Here, we demonstrate that neurons in the voice-selective ATL of two macaques support invariant voice identity representations through dynamic population-level coding. These representations minimize neural distances across different vocalizations from the same individual while preservin

Postnatal experience is critical to auditory development in vertebrates. The Australian zebra finch (Taeniopygia castanotis) provides a valuable model for understanding how complex social-acoustical environments influence the development of the neural circuits that support the perception of vocal communication signals. We previously showed that zebra finches raised by their parents in a breeding colony [colony-reared (CR)] perform twice as well in a song discrimination task as birds raised with only their families [pair-reared (PR)], and we identified functional differences within the auditory

Mysticetes, or baleen whales, have an air sac on the ventral surface of the larynx known as the "laryngeal sac." The primary hypothesis regarding this structure's function is that it is involved in sound production. However, several other functions have been proposed, including air recycling, air storage, and even buoyancy control. In this study, we analyzed ontogenetic development and sexual dimorphism of the laryngeal sac with an aim of elucidating the function of this organ. The larynx of 61 (male: n = 40, female: n = 21) common minke whales Balaenoptera acutorostrata, collected from off th

Vocalization is a common means of communication across vertebrates, but the evolutionary origins of the neural circuits controlling these behaviors are not clear. Peripheral mechanisms of sound production vary widely: fish produce sounds with a swimbladder or pectoral fins; amphibians, reptiles, and mammalians vocalize using a larynx; birds vocalize with a syrinx. Despite the diversity of vocal effectors across taxa, there are many similarities in the neural circuits underlying the control of these organs. Do similarities in vocal circuit structure and function indicate that vocal behaviors fi

Songbirds produce complex vocalizations by coordinating neuromuscular control of syrinx, respiratory system, and upper vocal tract. The functional roles of syringeal muscles have been documented mainly with correlative data, which have suggested that synergistic activation plays a role in the fine control of vocal features. However, the specific involvement of individual muscles in achieving this fine control is still largely unknown. Here we investigate the contributions of the two main airflow controlling muscles, the dorsal and ventral tracheobronchial muscles in the zebra finch, through a

UNLABELLED: Listeners locate potential mates using species-specific vocal signals. As tetrapods transitioned from water to land, lungs replaced gills, allowing expiration to drive sound production. Some frogs then returned to water. Here we explore how air-driven sound production changed upon re-entry to preserve essential acoustic information on species identity in the secondarily aquatic frog genus Xenopus. We filmed movements of cartilage and muscles during evoked sound production in isolated larynges. Results refute the current theory for Xenopus vocalization, cavitation, and favor instead

BACKGROUND: Palaeognathae is a basal clade within Aves and include the large and flightless ratites and the smaller, volant tinamous. Although much research has been conducted on various aspects of palaeognath morphology, ecology, and evolutionary history, there are still areas which require investigation. This study aimed to fill gaps in our knowledge of the Southern Cassowary, Casuarius casuarius, for which information on the skeletal systems of the syrinx, hyoid and larynx is lacking - despite these structures having been recognised as performing key functional roles associated with vocalis

Acoustic parameters of killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles were described for the western South Atlantic Ocean and highlight the occurrence of high frequency whistles. Killer whale signals were recorded on December of 2012, when a pod of four individuals was observed harassing a group of sperm whales. The high frequency whistles were highly stereotyped and were modulated mostly at ultrasonic frequencies. Compared to other contour types, the high frequency whistles are characterized by higher bandwidths, shorter durations, fewer harmonics, and higher sweep rates. The results add to the knowled

Song production in birds is driven by temporally complex respiratory patterns. In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), song consists of repetitions of a stereotyped sequence of distinct syllables (motif). Syllables correspond to distinct expiratory pulses, which alternate with short deep inspirations. We investigated the effect of the song motor pattern on respiration using a newly developed mask system to measure oxygen consumption while simultaneously monitoring subsyringeal air sac pressure. The metabolic cost of song is closely related to song duration (mean=85.7 microl O(2) g(-1) x min(-1

This study examines the positional relationships of the odontocete (toothed whale) larynx to further an understanding of their breathing, swallowing, and vocalizing abilities. Seventeen specimens representing nine cetacean genera (Delphinus, Stenella, Tursiops, Grampus, Delphinapterus, Globicephala, Kogia, Mesoplodon, and Phocoena) were studied post mortem. Nine specimens were sectioned in the midsagittal plane and the position of the larynx relative to vertebral levels, skull base, and palatal structures was recorded. In eight specimens that could not be bisected for reasons of large size or

Records of electrical activity in the tracheal muscles of domestic chickens were obtained for a variety of ad libitum vocalizations. Primary attention was given to an analysis of events during the most complex call, crowing. Three pairs of muscles, Mm, tracheohyoideus, tracheolateralis, and sternotrachealis, can affect the configuration of a chicken's syrinx. The firing patterns of the three muscle pairs are related to their different abilities to affect the tension of the syringeal membranes. The influence of M. tracheohyoideus is most indirect and imprecise, and its role the least clearly de

Ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) are widely studied in mice as a marker of social communication. Typically, USVs are recorded during brief social encounters in unfamiliar test cages. In the present study, we explored how freely interacting pairs of C57BL/6 J adult female mice spontaneously use USVs during long-term monitoring. We discovered that these mice display a previously undescribed behaviour: they emit specific USV sequences while depositing a large volume of urine in a corner of the cage. The most striking feature of USVs accompanying this vocalised urination behaviour was the stereotyp

Mouse ultrasonic vocalisations have been often used as a paradigm to extrapolate vocal communication defects observed in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The role of these vocalisations as well as their development, structure and informational content, however, remain largely unknown. In the present study, we characterised in depth the emission of pup and adult ultrasonic vocalisations of wild-type mice and their ProSAP1/Shank2(-/-) littermates lacking a synaptic scaffold protein mutated in ASD. We hypothesised that the vocal behaviour of ProSAP1/Shank2(-/-) mice not only differs

This study examined whether piglet distress vocalizations vary with age, body weight and health status, according to the predictions of the honest signalling of need evolutionary model. Vocalizations were recorded during manual squeezing (a simulation of being crushed by mother sow) and during isolation on Days 1 and 7 after birth in piglets from 15 litters. We predicted that during squeezing, younger, lighter and sick piglets would call more intensely because they are in higher risk of dying during crushing and therefore they benefit more from the sow's reaction to intensive vocalization. For

A female chimpanzee's behavior was videotaped during the learning of contingency tasks and used to code her facial expressions, vocal expressions, and other behavior. The chimpanzee showed negative emotional behaviors to negative feedback and seemed to depend not only on the lack of food as reward. The most negative emotional situation for the chimpanzee seemed to be one in which she made an error.

This experiment studied the effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on lordosis responses and ultrasonic communication (measures of sexual receptivity and proceptivity, respectively) in female hamsters. Specifically, lordosis durations and rates of ultrasound production by estradiol-primed ovariectomized hamsters were observed following acute treatment with 1.5 mg/kg of THC, 500 micrograms of progesterone, or the injection vehicle. The results showed that THC can facilitate both lordosis and ultrasound production. Together with results from other laboratories, these data indicate that TH

Genetic predisposition and stress are major factors in depression. The objective of this study was to establish a robust animal model of depression by selecting the appropriate substrain of the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat, and subjecting these rats to the stress of maternal separation during the early stages of development. The initial experiment identified WKY/NCrl as the appropriate substrain of WKY to use for the study. In the second part of the study, depression-like behavior and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were recorded in WKY/NCrl and maternally separated WKY/NCrl rats during the course o

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SC methadone in four-toed hedgehogs.
ANIMALS: 9 to 12 healthy adult four-toed hedgehogs (7 to 9 males and 3 females).
METHODS: Hedgehogs underwent 3 randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, complete crossover studies. Hind limb withdrawal latencies in response to an acute thermal noxious stimulus were measured to evaluate the antinociceptive efficacy of methadone. Single doses of SC methadone were evaluated at 0.5 and 1 mg/kg for dose-dependent effects. Additionally, methadone (1.5 mg/kg) was administered at different concentrations to assess

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal cancer resections often require excision of portions of the larynx along with sacrifice of the ipsilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). In such cases, there are no reconstructive options that reliably restore laryngeal function, rendering patients with severe functional impairment. To address this unmet clinical need, we extend our evaluation of a 3-implant mucosal, muscle, cartilage reconstruction approach aimed at promoting functional laryngeal restoration in a porcine hemilaryngectomy model with ipsilateral RLN transection.
METHODS: Six Yucatan mini-pigs underwent
