Six patients with achondroplasia and symptoms suggestive of cervicomedullary junction compression are reviewed; these included three females and three males, with an average age of 8 years (range 7 months to 30 years). The mean duration of symptoms prior to intervention was 1.9 years. Symptoms included occipitocervical pain, ataxia, incontinence, apnea, and respiratory arrest. Radiological investigations consisted of plain films with flexion and extension views, pluridirectional tomography, thin-section computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Typical findings included marked f

A broad spectrum of disease entities affects the atlantoaxial-clival region. This area is readily accessible through a transoral approach, which offers capabilities for canal decompression and fusion. A case is reported that required transoral odontoidectomy with concurrent excision of an osteophyte from the base of an ununited odontoid fracture. Operative preparation, technique, and postoperative management are described in detail. The advantage and applications of the procedure are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The association between SOX14 and cancer has been reported. The aim of this study was to identify and validate the potential value of SOX14 methylation in the early detection of cervical cancer.
METHODS: First, we extracted the data for SOX14 methylation and expression within cervical cancer from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and analysed them via UALCAN, Wanderer, MEXPRESS and LinkedOmics. Subsequently, according to the bioinformatics findings, primers and probes were designed for the most significantly differentiated methylation CpG site and synthesized for methylation

Cervical cancer ranks fourth in women in terms of incidence and mortality. The RNA-binding protein YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA-binding protein F2 (YTHDF2) contributes to cancer progression by incompletely understood mechanisms. We show how YTHDF2 controls the fate of cervical cancer cells and whether YTHDF2 could be a valid target for the therapy of cervical cancer. Sphere formation and alkaline phosphatase staining assays were performed to evaluate tumor stemness of cervical cancer cells following YTHDF2 knockdown. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry and TUNEL assay. The compounds 4PBA an

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the applicability and safety of single-stage combined anterior-posterior stabilization and fusion for superior and distant cervical spine fracture.
METHODS: Ten patients with superior and distant cervical spine fracture and/or dislocation aged 30 approximately 68, 8 males and 2 females, underwent single-stage combined anterior-posterior stabilization and fusion. For most cases, especially those whose inferior cervical fracture was without complete bilateral lock of small joints, anterior procedures were performed, including subtotal corpectomy or diskectomy and allograf

This study compares the frequency of signs and symptoms from the cervical spine in 24 patients diagnosed with Meniere's disease and 24 control subjects from a population sample. From a previous controlled comparative study concerning signs and symptoms of craniomandibular disorders, 24 patients diagnosed with Meniere's disease (10 males and 14 females) and their 24 matched control subjects participated in this investigation on the state of the cervical spine. Symptoms of cervical spine disorders, such as head and neck/shoulder pain, were all significantly more frequent in the patient group tha

Marked evanescent swelling of the prevertebral soft tissues has been found in 2 patients with undisplaced fractures of the odontoid process. In one patient the significance of the swelling was appreciated only in retrospect and after shift had occurred at the fracture site. The experience gained from this patient alerted the radiologist and the clinician so that any further damage could be averted in the second patient. All patients with head injuries require radiography of the cervical spine. Soft-tissue swelling anterior to the atlas should be viewed in a serious light.

Occipital condylar fractures (OCFs) seem to be rare. The exact incidence is unknown, but a few studies reported a 3-4% incidence of OCFs in patients with severe head injury and altered Glasgow Coma Scale score. The low incidence of OCFs and missed diagnoses in these patients may result in late neurological deficits. We report the history of a patient with bilateral OCFs, a combined fracture of the anterior arcus of the atlas and associated retropharyngeal and epidural cervical haematomas, who presented without life-threatening symptoms or neurological deficits.

Twenty cases of fatal subarachnoid haemorrhage after minor injuries are presented. Thirteen of the cases occurred during scuffles, four in traffic accidents and in the remaining three cases the traumatic source was not definitely elucidated. In the majority of cases the deceased was under the influence of alcohol when the haemorrhage occurred. In 10 cases (50%) the haemorrhage was due to a rupture of a normal vertebral artery and in eight cases (40%) a fracture of the transverse process of the atlas was demonstrated. It is underlined that especially injuries to the side of the upper cervical s

BACKGROUND: Lesions that affect the lower clivus, foramen magnum, the craniocervical junction, and the upper cervical spinal canal that are anterolateral and at times intradural require access ventral to the cerebellum and spinal cord. The posterolateral transcondylar approach provides such a route. In addition, posterior craniocervical stabilization can be accomplished at the same time. The author has reviewed the technique as well as the surgical results here.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The posterolateral transcondylar approach to the craniocervical junction was utilized in children with schwan

Bow hunter's syndrome (BHS) is most commonly caused by compression of the vertebral artery (VA). It has not been known to occur due to an extracranially originated posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), the first case of which we present herein. A 71-year-old man presented with reproducible dizziness on leftward head rotation, indicative of BHS. On radiographic examination, the bilateral VAs merged into the basilar artery, and the left VA was predominant. The right PICA originated extracranially from the right VA at the atlas-axis level and ran vertically into the spinal canal. During th

Endoscopes in otolaryngology may facilitate accessing the lumens and sites such as upper cervical spine with minimally invasive surgical exposure. Here, we present 2 interesting cases of youth who underwent endoscopic removal of bullets in the cranial ridge junction region. The first case was a 20-year-old young man who underwent a gunshot in the face. A CT scan showed that a metallic foreign body located inside the right lateral body of Atlas that presented a comminuted fracture. The second case a 36-year-old man who also underwent a gunshot in the face. CT scan showed a foreign body lodged in

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous anterior arch fracture of the atlas after a C1 laminectomy (CIL) is an extremely rare complication.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 72-year-old male presented with the sudden onset of neck pain. His prior history included; a CIL for atlantoaxial subluxation, shunt closure for a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula at C3, a cervical laminoplasty from C3 to C6 for stenosis, and a prior anterior C4/5 and C5/6 fusion 14 years ago. Once the computed tomography documented a right C1 anterior arch fracture, and occipital-cervical fusion was performed utilizing C2 laminar screws and C4 pedi
