Facial Electromyography Mapping in Healthy and Bell's Palsy Subjects: A High-Density Surface EMG Study.

Bell's palsy impairs the symmetry of facial appearance and movement. Detailed examination of facial muscle activities should be important for the diagnosis and treatment of the Bell's palsy. In this study, facial muscle activities in normal and Bell's palsy conditions were measured using a high-density (HD) electromyography (EMG) technique. The EMG signals during active tasks (four different facial expressions) and resting task were collected with a HD array of EMG electrodes from forehead and cheek muscles. To visualize facial EMG activities, the EMG maps were reconstructed from the HD-EMG re…

Modified electromyography-assisted optimization approach for predicting lumbar spine loading while walking with backpack loads.

This study modified an electromyography-assisted optimization approach for predicting lumbar spine loading while walking with backpack loads. The modified-electromyography-assisted optimization approach eliminated the electromyography measurement at maximal voluntary contraction and adopted a linear electromyography-force relationship. Moreover, an optimal lower boundary condition for muscle gain was introduced to constrain the trunk muscle co-activation. Anthropometric information of 10 healthy young men as well as their kinematic, kinetic, and electromyography data obtained while walking wit…

Time-varying surface electromyography topography as a prognostic tool for chronic low back pain rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Nonsurgical rehabilitation therapy is a commonly used strategy to treat chronic low back pain (LBP). The selection of the most appropriate therapeutic options is still a big challenge in clinical practices. Surface electromyography (sEMG) topography has been proposed to be an objective assessment of LBP rehabilitation. The quantitative analysis of dynamic sEMG would provide an objective tool of prognosis for LBP rehabilitation. PURPOSE: To evaluate the prognostic value of quantitative sEMG topographic analysis and to verify the accuracy of the performance of proposed time-…

Improving referring physicians' understanding of electromyography reports when qualifying radiculopathies: a need for standardized terminology.

Electromyographic (EMG) reporting of radiculopathies is not standardized, and the terminology used in reports can be misinterpreted by referring physicians. Physicians who refer patients for EMG studies at the Mayo Clinic were surveyed about their understanding of 6 different EMG interpretations of an S1 radiculopathy. Of 45 responders, the terms “acute, active,” “chronic, inactive,” and “old” were interpreted consistently by 95%, 98%, and 84% of responders, respectively. Physicians had the most difficulty understanding the meaning of “chronic” in isolation, “chronic, active,” or “old with unc

Diagnostic discordance of electromyography (EMG) versus voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) for detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergy (DESD).

AIMS: Detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) is defined as: "a detrusor contraction concurrent with an involuntary contraction of the urethral and/or periurethral striated muscle." In neurogenic etiology, this usually refers to involuntary contraction of the external striated sphincter and has classically been termed detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia (DESD). There is currently no consensus regarding diagnosis [specifics of electromyographic (EMG) or voiding cystourethrographic (VCUG) determination], and little data on how well these modalities correlate. We explore the diagnostic congruenc

[Electromyography study and follow-up of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis after thyroid gland operations].

Bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsies result in dyspnea and often require further surgery to secure an adequate airway for safe respiration. The present study was devised to determine a predictive value of laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) and if it has therapeutic consequences. In a retrospective study of 63 patients with bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsies after thyroid gland surgery we compared the results of LEMG from the thyroarytenoid muscles with the spontaneous recovery rate of vocal cord mobility. A tracheostomy had to be performed in 18 patients because of unsafe …

Ano-rectal function assessed by manometry and electromyography after endorectal pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease.

Since 1975 the endorectal pull-through operation for Hirschsprung's disease has been favoured in this department. Out of 16 patients, 12 were examined 8 months to 6 years later by ano-rectal manometry and external sphincter electromyography. The results indicate a normal postoperative rectal capacity and rectal sensibility. There was no internal sphincter relaxation in response to a rectal distention. Resting and reflex activity of the external and sphincter were normal.

Ultrasound alone is sufficient: no added value of electromyography in botulinum toxin prehabilitation for complex ventral hernias?

INTRODUCTION: The use of botulinum toxin (BT) and progressive pneumoperitoneum (PPP) as a prehabilitation strategy for complex ventral hernias has gained widespread acceptance. While ultrasound (US) is the standard method for guiding BT infiltration, the added value of electromyography (EMG) remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the radiologic effectiveness of abdominal wall prehabilitation using BT infiltration guided by US alone compared to US combined with EMG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, observational, prospective, and analytical study was conducted between January 2019 and …

Synchronous surface electromyography as objective method to evaluate the outcome of a biofeedback training in patients with facial synkinesis.

Facial aberrant reinnervation after unilateral facial paralysis is characterized by facial synkinesis and global facial muscle hypertonicity. Therefore, therapy effort is directed on improved facial symmetry by reducing facial synkinesis and the elevated muscle tone. There are no established methods to confirm these aims objectively. Therefore the aim of the present study was to verify if high-resolution surface electromyography (HR-sEMG) mapping of the entire face during standardized facial movements is one such sought-after method. Bilateral HR-sEMG facial mapping was performed in 36 patient…

Analysis of the mechanism and clinical classification of thoracolumbar scoliosis using three-dimensional EOS and surface electromyography.

To analyze a thoracolumbar scoliosis group, we analyzed data from the acquired database by groups: the sEMG group (n = 16) and 3D-EOS group (n = 55). The asymmetric hyper/hypoactivation ratio of muscle and LLD (>3 mm) were measured in the sEMG group. In the 3D-EOS group, we recorded the values of parameters including LLD, pelvis rotation, and kyphosis/lordosis. In the sEMG study, sEMG examinations were conducted individually in patients with idiopathic scoliosis to analyze hyper/hypoactivation of the paraspinal muscle. In the three-dimensional EOS study, the Cobb angle, femoral height differen

Is the pre-operative lateral spread response on facial electromyography a valid diagnostic tool for hemifacial spasm?

The lateral spread response (LSR) on preoperative facial electromyogram (EMG) is a useful tool in evaluating patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). There may be some instances where the LSR does not appear on the preoperative EMG, thus disrupting the diagnosis and treatment of HFS. In this study, we evaluated the patients who did not exhibit LSR on preoperative EMG but underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm. We searched for patients who underwent MVD for HFS but had an absence of LSR on preoperative EMG between January 2016 and June 2018. Surgical outcomes were evaluat

Using both electromyography and movement disorder assessment improved the classification of children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy.

AIM: Children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP) are often severely affected and effective treatment is difficult, due to different underlying disease mechanisms. Comprehensive systematic movement disorder evaluations were carried out on patients with this disorder. METHODS: Patients born from 1995 to 2007 were identified from the Danish Cerebral Palsy Register and referrals to the neuropaediatric centre, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. They were classified by gross motor function, manual functional ability, communication ability, dystonia and spasticity. Electromyography was carried out on the …

Comparison of the Strength and Electromyography of the Evertor Muscles With and Without Toe Flexion in Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability.

BACKGROUND: Weakness of evertor strength is controversial in chronic ankle instability (CAI). Ankle evertor muscles are attached to the toe joints as well as to the metatarsal bone. Therefore, it is necessary to consider toe joint position for the measurement of evertor strength. The purpose of this study was to compare ankle evertor strength and muscle activity during eversion with and without toe flexion (TF) in individuals with CAI and individuals in a healthy group. METHODS: Fifteen subjects with CAI and 15 healthy subjects participated in this study. Isometric ankle evertor strength and

Uterine electromyography for discrimination of labor imminence in women with threatened preterm labor under tocolytic treatment.

As one of the main aims of obstetrics is to be able to detect imminent delivery in patients with threatened preterm labor, the techniques currently used in clinical practice have serious limitations in this respect. The electrohysterogram (EHG) has now emerged as an alternative technique, providing relevant information about labor onset when recorded in controlled checkups without administration of tocolytic drugs. The studies published to date mainly focus on EHG-burst analysis and, to a lesser extent, on whole EHG window analysis. The study described here assessed the ability of EHG signals
