OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide long-term clinical data about an innovative epidermal radioisotope therapy called Rhenium-SCT® (Skin Cancer Therapy) for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), based on the use of the non-sealed beta emitter rhenium-188.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 52 NMSC patients with a mean age of 71.7 years were treated with rhenium-188 skin cancer therapy between the years 2005 and 2014. Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent skin cancer, generally located in hair-bearing, sunlight-exposed areas. Basal cell carcinoma usually occurs on the head and neck, but very rarely on extra-facial locations. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman presenting with a solitary non-healing ulcer on the sole of the right foot for two years. Histopathological examination showed a typical nodular basal cell carcinoma, confirmed by positivity to Ber-EP4 on immunohistochemistry. There was no history of trauma, exposure to noxious agents, basal cell nevus syndrome, or xeroderma pigmentosum.

UVR in sunlight causes mutations that drive basal cell carcinomas. However, the incidence of these tumors plateaus with prolonged exposure, but the incidence of other skin cancers increases. Makarova et al. now show that vitamin D3 produced in the skin by UVR protects against its oncogenic effects by inhibiting Hedgehog signaling, whereas dietary vitamin D3 does not.

Rhinophyma, final stage of rosacea is considered as benign pathology. We present the case of a patient with basal cell carcinoma diagnosed on rhinophyma. Most skin cancers are amenable to cure with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment; however, skin cancers associated with genetic syndromes may give rise to some of the most relentless, deforming, and ultimately lethal skin cancers clinicians will ever encounter. This article reviews the commonly accepted genetic syndromes associated with skin cancer, details their clinical pictures and key points of recognition and diagnosis, considers associated relevant clinical concerns, and discusses therapeutic options and dangers.

While cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a protozoal parasite of the skin, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a malignant tumour of the skin. In this paper, we report the identification of cutaneous leishmaniasis and basal cell carcinoma in one patient, in the same site and same lesion. This raised the possibility that CL is a predisposing factor for BCC.

We report the case of a patient who had a lesion on the back that clinically resembled a basal cell carcinoma, but histologically showed changes of a basal cell carcinoma and a nodular malignant melanoma. We also review the literature on the association of basal cell carcinomas with other tumors.
