Audiovisual integration in macaque face patch neurons.

Primate social communication depends on the perceptual integration of visual and auditory cues, reflected in the multimodal mixing of sensory signals in certain cortical areas. The macaque cortical face patch network, identified through visual, face-selective responses measured with fMRI, is assumed to contribute to visual social interactions. However, whether face patch neurons are also influenced by acoustic information, such as the auditory component of a natural vocalization, remains unknown. Here, we recorded single-unit activity in the anterior fundus (AF) face patch, in the superior tem

Altering brain dynamics with transcranial random noise stimulation.

Random noise can enhance the detectability of weak signals in nonlinear systems, a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance (SR). This concept is not only applicable to single threshold systems but can also be applied to dynamical systems with multiple attractor states, such as observed during the phenomenon of binocular rivalry. Binocular rivalry can be characterized by marginally stable attractor states between which the brain switches in a spontaneous, stochastic manner. Here we used a computational model to predict the effect of noise on perceptual dominance durations. Subsequently we comp

Excitatory and inhibitory lateral interactions effects on contrast detection are modulated by tRNS.

Contrast sensitivity for a Gabor signal is affected by collinear high-contrast Gabor flankers. The flankers reduce (inhibitory effect) or increase (facilitatory effect) sensitivity, at short (2λ) and intermediate (6λ) target-to-flanker separation respectively. We investigated whether these inhibitory/facilitatory sensitivity effects are modulated by transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) applied to the occipital and frontal cortex of human observers during task performance. Signal detection theory was used to measure sensitivity (d') and the Criterion (C) in a contrast detection task, pe

Effects of auditory and visual stimuli on glucose metabolism in Holstein dairy cattle.

BACKGROUND: Standardization of the intravenous glucose tolerance test (ivGTT) in cattle has received little attention despite its widespread use to monitor glucose metabolism. The impact of management practices including several sensorial stimuli on test responses has not yet been described in young cattle. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of noise exposure, and visual food stimuli in combination with physical restraint on ivGTT and insulin traits in Holstein cattle. A total of 108 ivGTT (6 tests per animal) were performed in bulls (n = 6), steers (n = 6), and heifers (n

The impact of multisensory instruction on learning letter names and sounds, word reading, and spelling.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the use of simultaneous multisensory structured language instruction promoted better letter name and sound production, word reading, and word spelling for second grade children with typical development (N = 6) or with dyslexia (N = 5) than structured language instruction alone. The use of non-English graphemes (letters) to represent two pretend languages was used to control for children's lexical knowledge. A multiple baseline, multiple probe across subjects single-case design, with an embedded alternating treatments design, was used to comp

The perception of affective touch in anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disorder characterized by restricted eating, fears of gaining weight, and body image distortions. The etiology remains unknown; however impairments in social cognition and reward circuits contribute to the onset and maintenance of the disorder. One possibility is that AN is associated with reduced perceived pleasantness during social interactions. We therefore examined the perception of interpersonal, 'affective touch' and its social modulation in AN. We measured the perceived pleasantness of light, dynamic stroking touches applied to the forearm of 25 AN patients an

The distracting impact of repeated visible and invisible onsets on focused attention.

A sudden peripheral onset is a powerful attentional attractor. However, in real life potentially distracting events do not always occur as a single event, but rather they can occur in a repetitive fashion. Hence, one of the aims of the present study was to investigate how the attentional system reacts to multiple consecutive onsets within the same trial. The results, quite surprisingly, showed that repeated peripheral onsets do not have a negative impact on visual performance, while they confirmed that a single peripheral onset captures focused attention. We hypothesize the existence of a shor

Inferior parietal lobule encodes visual temporal resolution processes contributing to the critical flicker frequency threshold in humans.

The measurement of the Critical Flicker Frequency threshold is used to study the visual temporal resolution in healthy subjects and in pathological conditions. To better understand the role played by different cortical areas in the Critical Flicker Frequency threshold perception we used continuous Theta Burst Stimulation (cTBS), an inhibitory plasticity-inducing protocol based on repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. The Critical Flicker Frequency threshold was measured in twelve healthy subjects before and after cTBS applied over different cortical areas in separate sessions. cTBS ove

The impact of sound in modern multiline video slot machine play.

Slot machine wins and losses have distinctive, measurable, physiological effects on players. The contributing factors to these effects remain under-explored. We believe that sound is one of these key contributing factors. Sound plays an important role in reinforcement, and thus on arousal level and stress response of players. It is the use of sound for positive reinforcement in particular that we believe influences the player. In the current study, we investigate the role that sound plays in psychophysical responses to slot machine play. A total of 96 gamblers played a slot machine simulator w

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effects on Single and Paired Flash Visual Evoked Potentials.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over the occipital cortex has a controversial effect on the visual cortex excitability. Paired flash visual evoked potentials (paired F-VEPs) offer a unique method to express neural inhibition within the visual system. However, no studies have explored the effects of tDCS on F-VEPs in humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of single- and paired-F-VEPs during and after tDCS in healthy humans. Twenty-six healthy volunteers participated. F-VEPs were recorded from occipital electrodes with closed eyes. Stimuli were single fl

Occipital transcranial magnetic stimulation has an activity-dependent suppressive effect.

The effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) vary depending on the brain state at the stimulation moment. Four mechanisms have been proposed to underlie these effects: (1) virtual lesion--TMS suppresses neural signals; (2) preferential activation of less active neurons--TMS drives up activity in the stimulated area, but active neurons are saturating; (3) noise generation--TMS adds random neuronal activity, and its effect interacts with stimulus intensity; and (4) noise generation--TMS adds random neuronal activity, and its effect depends on TMS intensity. Here we explore these hypoth

TMS to the lateral occipital cortex disrupts object processing but facilitates scene processing.

The study of brain-damaged patients and advancements in neuroimaging have lead to the discovery of discrete brain regions that process visual image categories, such as objects and scenes. However, how these visual image categories interact remains unclear. For example, is scene perception simply an extension of object perception, or can global scene "gist" be processed independently of its component objects? Specifically, when recognizing a scene such as an "office," does one need to first recognize its individual objects, such as the desk, chair, lamp, pens, and paper to build up the represen

Effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation on visual evoked potentials in a visual suppression task.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can non-invasively modify cortical neural activity by means of a time-varying magnetic field. For example, in cognitive neuroscience, it is applied to create reversible "virtual lesions" in healthy humans (usually assessed as diminished performance in a behavioral task), thereby helping to establish causal structure-function relationships. Despite its widespread use, it is still rather unclear how TMS acts on existing, task-related neural activity, potentially resulting in a measurable effect on the behavioral level. Here, we deliver TMS to early visual

Suppression of visually induced vertigo: effects of attentional position and modality.

INTRODUCTION: Visually induced vertigo (VIV) is a serious problem because humans rely on vision more than any other sensory system to receive information from their surrounding environment. We investigated whether attention to simultaneous visual or auditory tasks would reduce VIV. METHODS: Subjects were four women and one man who were highly susceptible to VIV and four women who had low susceptibility to VIV. An animation display was prepared to test the effect of overlapping visual task stimuli when the position of the stimuli on the screen was changed. The effect of modality was tested by

Absence of embodied empathy during pain observation in Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental condition within the autism spectrum conditions (ASC) characterized by specific difficulties in communication, social interaction, and empathy that is essential for sharing and understanding others' feelings and emotions. Although reduced empathy is considered a core feature of ASC, neurophysiological evidence of empathic deficits before and below mentalizing and perspective taking is lacking. We explored whether people with AS differ from neurotypical control participants in their empathic corticospinal response to the observation of

Electromagnetic indication of hypervigilant responses to emotional stimuli in blood-injection-injury fear.

Blood phobia differs from other phobias and anxiety disorders in that no attentional bias for blood-related stimuli has been consistently observed. The present study aimed at clarifying this characteristic by investigating electromagnetic brain activity to blood-related and -unrelated pictures in high blood-fearful and non-fearful individuals. Relative to non-fearful controls, high blood-fearful subjects displayed more intense occipito-parietal activation 190-250ms after picture onset, which was interpreted as non-specifically enhanced sensory encoding of visual stimuli. Blood-related stimuli

Auditory and visual sustained attention in adolescents prenatally exposed to alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Sustained attention problems and impulsivity are reported in association with prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol syndrome, but research in this area is limited and contradictory. METHODS: Auditory and visual sustained attention were investigated in 265 low-income, predominantly African-American, adolescents (mean age, 15.12 years; SD, 0.92). Included were 53 unexposed controls and 128 exposed to alcohol and other drugs prenatally, with 46 of these exhibiting dysmorphic features and growth retardation, as well as a special-education contrast group (n = 84). A functional role of cholinergic innervation to neurons in the cat visual cortex.

1. Effects of microionophoretic application of acetylcholine (ACh) and its antagonists on neuronal responses to visual stimuli and to electrical stimulation of the lateral geniculate nucleus were studied in the cat striate cortex. 2. Responses elicited visually and electrically were facilitated by ACh in 74% of the cells tested, whereas the responses were suppressed in 16%. These ACh effects were blocked by a muscarinic antagonist, atropine, but not by a nicotinic antagonist, hexamethonium, indicating that the ACh effects are mediated through muscarinic receptors. A single application of atrop

Evidence for a Causal Dissociation of the McGurk Effect and Congruent Audiovisual Speech Perception via TMS to the Left pSTS.

Congruent visual speech improves speech perception accuracy, particularly in noisy environments. Conversely, mismatched visual speech can alter what is heard, leading to an illusory percept that differs from the auditory and visual components, known as the McGurk effect. While prior transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies have identified the left posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) as a causal region involved in the generation of the McGurk effect, it remains unclear whether this region is critical only for this illusion or also for the more general benefits of c
