Residual thoracic collections after thoracic traumas occur in 5-30% of patients and are a major risk factor for development of empyema. We prospectively studied results of 103 consecutive transthoracic needle biopsies of lung lesions suspicious for malignancy to determine if lesion size, depth within the lung, hyperinflation, second needle passes, or 100 percent oxygen breathing influenced the incidence of pneumothorax. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of ICD complications in a major trauma service in South Africa over a four-year period from January 2010 to December 2013.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether fetuses that underwent thoracoamniotic shunt placement for treatment of pleural effusion (PE) or macrocystic congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) have an improved outcome as compared with an untreated population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of radiological tests and the outcome after thoracoscopic evacuation of retained haemothorax.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Academic trauma centre, USA.
SUBJECTS: Of 703 patients with thoracic injuries, 58 (8%) were evaluated for and 15 (2%) were found to have, retained haemothorax.
INTERVENTIONS: Plain chest radiographs (CXR) and thoracic computed tomograms (CT) 48 hours after admission, and thoracoscopic evacuation within 3-6 days of admission.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Accuracy of radiological tests, morbidity, and mortality.

Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative bacterial infection characterized by multiple abscesses, sinus tracts, fibrosis, and granulation involving the face, neck, thorax, or abdomen. Thoracic actinomycosis probably results from aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions. Its description in the literature is extensive. Reported herein are two cases of thoracic actinomycosis with unusual manifestations exemplifying the organism's lack of regard for fascial planes.
