Long-Chain 3-Hydroxyacyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (LCHADD)-Associated Ocular Pathology-A Narrative Review.

Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder, with only a few hundred affected individuals worldwide. Since its initial recognition in the 1980s, only a limited number of studies have described its ocular manifestations. The aim of this review was to summarize and organize the available published evidence regarding ocular findings in LCHADD and their classification. A PubMed search was conducted for studies describing ocular findings associated with LCHADD, using combinations of the following keywords: LCHADD, chorioretinopath

Introducing a Sustainable Framework for Preschool Visual Acuity Screening: The Alexandroupolis Case.

Background/Objectives: Western societies introduce school-based or school-linked programs in order to improve the physical health status of students and prevent the negative impact of the late diagnosis of a series of diseases and conditions. Preschool visual acuity (VA) screening represents an established school-based approach aimed at the early detection of amblyopia risk factors and vision-related learning difficulties. In this study, we report the methods and outcomes of the first officially organized kindergarten-based VA screening program in Greece, implemented using the Democritus Digit

The three tiers of screening for sarcoidosis organ involvement.

Sarcoidosis may involve any organ in the body. Organ involvement with sarcoidosis may go undetected. This manuscript addresses a suggested approach to screening for sarcoidosis organ involvement. As sarcoidosis organ involvement may never cause symptoms or clinical problems, it is not always necessary to expend the time or expense to detect all organs involved with sarcoidosis. On the other hand, some forms of sarcoidosis organ involvement may have potentially severe consequences such as permanent vision impairment from eye sarcoidosis and sudden death from cardiac sarcoidosis. We believe it u

Photobiomodulation therapy for children's eye and vision conditions.

BACKGROUND: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive, light-based technology that stimulates cellular mechanisms, with therapeutic effect on a variety of medical conditions. Wavelengths of light are absorbed by intracellular photoreceptors, resulting in the activation of signalling pathways that culminate in biological changes within the cell. PBM treatment has been reported for a range of eye/vision conditions, mostly in adults. OBJECTIVES: We carried out a scoping review of the published literature and collated reported uses of PBM for eye/vision/lid/orbital conditions in children and you

Automated diagnosis of plus form and early stages of ROP using deep learning models.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) represents a critical ophthalmological pathology affecting premature infants, with established associations to low birth weight (BW) and early gestational age (GA). Elevated risk of severe ROP, which can result in irreversible vision loss, is observed in infants exhibiting lower BW and GA. This research investigates the development of an automated diagnostic system designed to classify Plus disease, a marker of abnormal retinal vascularity, and ROP staging, a determinant of disease progression. Specifically, the model facilitates binary classification of Plus d

Clinical, electrophysiologic and serologic evidence of cancer associated retinopathy preceding a diagnosis of breast cancer.

We report the case of a woman in her 50s who presented headaches, blurred vision, diplopia and loss of peripheral vision. She was treated for normal tension glaucoma based on optic nerve cupping prior to the development of diplopia. Records demonstrated visual field constriction over 4 months despite well-controlled intraocular pressures. Examination revealed decreased visual acuity and visual field constriction. The multifocal electroretinogram was abnormal. After a thorough review of her medical and family history, a concern for cancer-associated retinopathy developed. Blood samples were pos

Ibuprofen-Induced Aseptic Meningitis in a Male Adolescent with Intracranial Hypertension and Visual Impairment: A Case Report.

Drug-induced aseptic meningitis (DIAM) is a rare complication of certain drugs, most commonly reported with ibuprofen use. The present study reports on a male adolescent with intracranial hypertension and visual impairment accompanied by DIAM. We present a 16-year-old male patient who after ibuprofen consumption displayed headache, fever, photophobia, and blurred vision following heavy exercises. Examination of cerebrospinal fluid showed a mononuclear pleocytosis and an increase in protein concentration. Other examinations had normal results. The development of common clinical signs following

Updates in imaging in ocular oncology.

Innovations in ophthalmic imaging have made a profound impact on the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic disease. In ocular oncology, the development of optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging and swept source technologies has made it possible to visualize the anatomical characteristics of retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma with a level of detail previously unobtainable on clinical exam alone. As a result, our understanding of the pathophysiology of vision loss in choroidal melanoma in particular has improved. These modalities have also helped identify fundoscopically "invisi

Increasing myopia in Scotland at age of 3.5-5.5 years: A retrospective epidemiological study.

PURPOSE: Scotland has comprehensive child vision screening at age 3.5-5.5 years of age, with ~85% participation (40,000-50,000 screening episodes annually). Orthoptists deliver the screening, including presenting vision, cover test and other tests. Screening failures are referred for eye examinations, including cycloplegic refraction. The study aims to report refractive error data from these examinations (~5000-6000 annually) for 3 years before and 2 years following the COVID-19 pandemic, and to investigate correlations between myopia and socio-economic factors. METHODS: Right eye data from e…

Enhancing foundation model transfer for prostate cancer detection with patch-level contrastive learning.

Accurate localization of prostate cancer on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains challenging due to the subtle appearance of cancer, resulting in missed clinically significant cancers, large inter-reader variability and large numbers of confounders that require biopsy confirmation. Vision foundation models have shown promise, but direct transfer to prostate MRI is challenging due to the substantial domain gap between natural images and prostate MRI and the subtle appearance of prostate cancer. We therefore developed prostate vision contrastive networks (ProViCNet), a weakly supervised mode
