Comparative Wear Behavior of Titanium Nitride-Coated Titanium and Cobalt Chromium Femoral Components in Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Femoral component surface roughness is a critical determinant of polyethylene wear in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic surface coatings have been developed to improve wear resistance and address concerns related to metal hypersensitivity; however, comprehensive wear data remain limited. This knee simulator study evaluated the performance of TiN-coated titanium alloy (6 wt% aluminum, 4 wt% vanadium, balance titanium, Ti-6Al-4V) substrate femoral components compared with cobalt chromium (CoCr) femoral components. Mode I wear testing was conducted for 5.0 million cycl

A Pure Zwitterionic PSBMA Coating With Ultra-Low Friction, Anti-Adhesion and High Stability for Blood-Contacting Catheters.

With the increasing demand for blood-contacting medical devices, surface-related limitations of conventional materials, including high friction, nonspecific adhesion, and insufficient long-term stability, have become critical challenges for clinical safety. To address these issues while retaining zwitterions' inherent advantages, this study proposes a "penetration-crosslinking-entanglement" strategy to fabricate an integrated pure poly sulfobetaine methacrylate (PSBMA) zwitterionic hydrogel coating on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This process enables covalent bonding between PSBMA chains

Improving the ductility of high-strength biodegradable ZnMg alloys through Al, Mn, and Cu microalloying: in vitro evaluation.

ZnMg alloys are promising biodegradable materials for orthopedic and cardiovascular implants due to their favorable strength, biocompatibility, and degradation behavior. However, their ductility is often compromised by the brittle Mg2Zn11 intermetallic phase. In this study, we improved the ductility of high-strength ZnMg alloys through microalloying with Al, Mn, and Cu. Two multicomponent alloys-Zn-0.05 Mg-0.2 Al-0.2 Mn-0.2 Cu (ZA-0.05 Mg) and Zn-0.5 Mg-0.2Al-0.2Mn-0.2Cu (ZA-0.5 Mg)-were designed and compared with binary Zn-0.05 Mg and Zn-0.5 Mg references. Microstructural analysis reveals tha

Comparative Evaluation of Silver Dioxide-Coated and Noncoated Stainless Steel Wires for Susceptibility to Corrosion: Protocol for an In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Stainless steel (SS) orthodontic archwires are widely used because of their mechanical properties, affordability, and biocompatibility; yet, prolonged intraoral exposure can cause electrochemical corrosion and release of metal ions (eg, Ni and Cr) that may affect clinical performance and patient safety. Surface coatings such as silver dioxide have been proposed to improve corrosion resistance, but comparative data for silver dioxide-coated versus uncoated SS orthodontic archwires across clinically relevant simulated oral environments are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to com

Construction of biomimetic nanomedicine delivery system based on biomedical materials for treating brain diseases: A review.

Brain diseases are often characterized by a high mortality rate and high treatment difficulty, posing significant challenges to human healthcare. However, due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which separates brain blood vessels from brain tissue, the delivery efficacy of traditional delivery systems is limited. This makes it difficult to deliver drugs effectively to the affected areas, thereby severely limiting their therapeutic efficacy in treating these brain diseases. Recently, biomimetic drug delivery systems, particularly those based on biomaterials, have revolutionized t

PHEMA-polysilsesquioxane hybrids: a new platform for the photoinduced 3D printing of nitric oxide-releasing biomedical devices.

Photoinduced 3D printing offers new opportunities for fabricating patient-specific biomedical devices, but photocurable materials combining mechanical robustness, controlled nitric oxide (NO) release, endothelial compatibility, and hemocompatibility remain limited. Here, we report poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-polysilsesquioxane (PHEMA-PSS) hybrids as a platform for vat photopolymerization of NO-releasing biomedical constructs. Resins containing 5 or 10 wt% PSS and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) or poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) were printed into discs, porous st

Dissolving Microneedles for Transdermal Delivery of Melatonin: Fabrication, Characterization, and In Vivo Pharmacokinetic Evaluation in Mice.

Insomnia is a common physiological and psychological disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep, which negatively impacts daily functioning. Oral melatonin (MEL) is commonly used to treat insomnia and other sleep-related disorders. However, MEL has low bioavailability due to extensive first-pass metabolism and poor aqueous solubility, and its onset of action is slow. Dissolving microneedles (MNs) represent a promising minimally invasive approach to overcome these drawbacks by enhancing transdermal drug permeation and enabling systemic delivery while circumventing the gastro

Nanoliposomal Co-Delivery of AR-PROTAC and NFKBIZ siRNA for Synergistic Therapy of Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a prevalent form of hair loss primarily affecting younger individuals, remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to the lack of effective treatments. The pathogenesis of AGA is driven by the interaction between androgen receptors (AR) and androgens, as well as by dysregulation of the follicular ecological niche resulting from excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and insufficient vascularization in the perifollicular microenvironment. Given the multifactorial nature of AGA, a multi-target therapeutic strategy, rather than a single-target approach, has emerg

Tunable Biodegradable Methacrylate Gelatin Microspheres Enable Renal Artery Embolization.

Renal artery hemorrhage (RAH) is a common and potentially life-threatening medical emergency. Recent advances in interventional devices, including microguidewires and microcatheters, have made super-selective renal artery embolization (SRAE) an important treatment option for RAH because it enables precise localization of bleeding vessels, simplified procedures, reliable hemostasis, and reduced tissue injury. However, currently used embolic agents, including gelatin sponges, microcoils, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles, and N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) glue, remain associated with limitations

Evaluation Methods for Mechanical Biocompatibility of Innovative Prolapse Repair Meshes.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) affects many women and involves the displacement of pelvic organs due to weakened support structures. While synthetic meshes are used in surgeries to reinforce these structures, they can lead to complications due to poor biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Biodegradable meshes offer an innovative solution, providing flexible and strong support that enhances tissue reinforcement and reduces the risk of injuries. The main objective of this study is to enhance our understanding and provide valuable insights into the performance of vaginal tissue and mesh implan

A Memristor Based on Organic Heterojunction for Monitoring Follicular Fluid within the Ovaries during Aging.

Memristor has shown significant application prospects in the post Moore's electron era, but its application in the field of reproductive medicine is still blank. In this work, a memristor with Ag/C40H56-PEDOT:PSS/FTO structure was prepared by using a heterojunction of natural biomaterial carotene (C40H56) and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the functional layer of the device, which demonstrates remarkable resistance switching capabilities under a certain bias voltage. Subsequently, this memristor was employed to monitor the follicular fluid within the ova

Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose/Polydopamine Biocellulose Coatings with Enhanced Wet Stability for Implantable Medical Devices.

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a biocompatible and biodegradable derivative of cellulose, making it a promising material for biomedical applications. However, its poor stability in aqueous environments has significantly limited its use in long-term biomedical devices. Here, we present for the first time a simple and controllable method to enhance the wet stability of CMC coatings by cross-linking of CMC and polydopamine (PDA) and self-polymerization of PDA for widespread applications in biomedical devices. A series of CMC/PDA coatings were fabricated on the initial PDA layers by using

Bioresorbable, amorphous magnesium-fiber reinforced bone cement with enhanced mechanical and biological properties.

In this study, we developed and characterized a fully biodegradable composite bone cement reinforced with short, randomly oriented amorphous magnesium fibers. Fibers of composition Mg60Zn35Ca5 (in at.%) with 50 μm diameter and 2 mm length were produced by wire spinning and then mixed with a magnesium calcium phosphate cement using fiber volume fractions between 10 and 20 %. The interface strength between the fibers and cement was improved by treating the fibers with diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Compared to the reference cement without fibers, flexural strength was increased by 18 % for the c

Self-reinforced silk nanofibrils networks enable ultrafine fibroin monofilament sutures applied in minimally invasive surgery.

Superfine recycled regenerated silk fibroin (RRSF) monofilament sutures are designed to minimize surgical incisions, prevent scar formation, and facilitate precise suturing in cosmetic and plastic surgeries. However, balancing fineness and strength remains a challenge because the RRSF extraction process disrupts the hierarchical structure of natural silk fibers, leading to suboptimal mechanical properties. This study employed mechanical peeling and grinding to exfoliate β-sheets-rich silk fibroin nanofibrils (SFNF), which served as homologous reinforcing materials uniformly dispersed in the RR

Biomechanical evaluation of biodegradable PCL cog threads for prolapse rehabilitation.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a prevalent pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) that significantly impacts women's quality of life, driving the need for innovative and less invasive treatment options. Surgical intervention remains the primary treatment for POP; however, it is often associated with high invasiveness, substantial risks, and a notable rate of failure. In this study, we investigate the potential of biodegradable cog threads, commonly used in cosmetic facial lifting, as an alternative surgical solution for reinforcing vaginal wall defects. Specifically, we evaluate the performance of com

Effects of O+ and a Non-O+ Blood Type, Number Concentration, and Membrane Phosphatidylserine Flipping on the Circulation Dynamics and Biodistribution of Microsized Erythrocyte-Derived Optical Particles in Mice.

Erythrocyte-derived microparticles containing near-infrared (NIR) dyes such as indocyanine green present a promising cell-based platform for optical imaging and phototherapeutics. Using real-time intravital NIR fluorescence imaging of mice vasculature, we investigated the effects of blood type, specifically O+ and B+, used in fabricating these particles, the number concentration (Nv) of the particles, and the relocalization of phosphatidylserine (PS) to the outer leaflet of the particles' membrane on the resulting circulation dynamics following a single retro-orbital injection. Additionally, w

Mechanistic Underpinnings of Epigenetic Enzyme-Responsive Nanoparticles.

Epigenetic enzyme-responsive nanoparticles (ERPs), which destabilize under the influence of histone deacetylase 8 (HDAC8), have been characterized in terms of their physicochemical, nanomechanical, and in vitro attributes. These nanoparticles were synthesized from amphiphilic block copolymers composed of poly(acetyl l-lysine) as the hydrophobic and poly(ethylene glycol) as the hydrophilic block. Upon optimizing the particle assembly process, we demonstrated that the nanoscale properties of ERPs, including hydrodynamic diameter (DH), size distribution, and stiffness, are selectively influenced

Velcro-Inspired Poly(ethylene glycol) Gel (PEGgel) for Robust Interface Adhesion Between Hydrogel, Device, and Tissue.

Hydrogel bioadhesive is widely used in tissue engineering, flexible electronics, and other fields because of its mechanical softness and good biocompatibility. However, due to the differences in the mechanical strength of various biological tissues, the mechanical properties of specific hydrogel bioadhesives are difficult to easily adjust to adapt to different tissue strengths. Here, we propose a poly(methacrylamide-polyethylene glycol-N-hydroxysuccinimide ester-co-acrylic acid) PEGgel (MAP) bioadhesive based on the drying cross-linking mechanism and a polymer platform with PEG as the solvent.

Strategic Design of Biocompatible, Glistening-Free, and Foldable Artificial Intraocular Lenses Based on Hydro-Amphiphilic Ternary Copolymers.

The increasing prevalence of cataracts underscores the urgent need for intraocular lens (IOL) materials that provide optical clarity, foldability, glistening resistance, and long-term biocompatibility. In this study, we developed hydro-amphiphilic ternary copolymers composed of styrene, hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate (PEGPEA) to address these requirements. This rational design integrates the strength and refractive index of hydrophobic styrene with the flexibility and hydrophilicity of HEMA and PEGPEA. The optimized formulation (H3), comprisin
