Cobalt single-atom catalyst tailored ceramic membrane for selective removal of emerging organic contaminants.

Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic

Comparing ceramic Fischer-Koch-S and gyroid TPMS scaffolds for potential in bone tissue engineering.

Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS), such as Gyroid, are widely accepted for bone tissue engineering due to their interconnected porous structures with tunable properties that enable high surface area to volume ratios, energy absorption, and relative strength. Among these topologies, the Fischer-Koch-S (FKS) has also been suggested for compact bone scaffolds, but few studies have investigated these structures beyond computer simulations. FKS scaffolds have been fabricated in metal and polymer, but to date none have been fabricated in a ceramic used in bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffold

Ceramic substitutes, failure to achieve solid fusion in posterolateral instrumented fusion: a surgical and histological evaluation.

PURPOSE: As the number of instrumented fusions increases, so does the utilization of bone substitutes. However, controversies persist regarding the effectiveness of ceramics in promoting solid fusion. Few histological studies have been conducted on patients to address this issue. To contribute insights into this topic, we assessed bony fusion both intraoperatively and histologically in patients who underwent posterolateral instrumented fusions enhanced with a biphasic ceramic compound. METHODS: We analyzed a series of 13 patients who underwent revision surgery due to adjacent segment disease …

Reduction of pathogenic bacteria from irrigation water through a copper-loaded porous ceramic emitter.

The increasing pathogenic bacteria threat in irrigation water has become a worldwide concern, prompting efforts to discover a new cost-effective method for pathogenic bacteria eradication, different than those currently in use. In this study, a novel copper-loaded porous ceramic emitter (CPCE) was developed via molded sintering method to kill bacteria from irrigation water. The material performance and hydraulic properties of CPCE are discussed herein, and the antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcusaureus (S. aureus) was evaluated. The incremental copper cont

Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Ceramic Wear Particles Do Not Elicit Inflammatory Responses in Human Macrophages.

Ten percent of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) require revision surgery. One of the reasons for THA are wear particles released from the implants that can activate the immune defense and cause osteolysis and failure of the joint implant. The discrepancies between reports on toxicity and immunogenicity of the implant materials led us to this study in which we compared toxicity and immunogenicity of well-defined nanoparticles from Al2O3, zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), and cobalt chrome (CoCr), a human THP-1 macrophage cell line, human PBMCs, and therefrom-derived primary macr

Effects of different removal methods of excess resin adhesive on the microleakage of alumina all-ceramic crowns.

BACKGROUND: Microleakage is a common problem that affects the quality and longevity of all-ceramic crowns. It is influenced by factors such as the resin cement, crown margin design and curing technique. However, few studies focus on the effect of different methods of removing excess resin adhesive on the microleakage of all-ceramic crowns. This study aimed to compare two methods of removing excess resin adhesive (the small brush and sickle methods) on the microleakage of all-ceramic crowns with different marginal clearances. METHODS: Forty extracted third molars were prepared with a 90° shoul

Joining of SiC Ceramic by Si-C Reaction Bonding Using Organic Resin as Carbon Precursor.

In this study, the joining of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics was achieved via a Si-C reaction bonding method using the phenolic resin (PF)-MgCl2 system as the carbon precursor. Specifically, by adding MgCl2 to the phenolic resin mixture, the average pore size of the product of carbonization of the PF resin mixture increased from 14 ± 5 nm to 524 ± 21 nm, which was beneficial for the infiltration of molten silicon at high temperature. The microstructure of the joined specimens and the effect of the inert filler on the joint strength were investigated. It was demonstrated that SiC-SiC joints wit…

Hierarchical Ceramic Coating Reduces Adherence of Cells, Blood, Bacteria, and Tissue on Titanium Microsurgical Instruments.

BACKGROUND: Progress in the field of microsurgery allows more detailed reconstructions of the smallest tissue structures. The applied instruments are left with biological residues after coming into contact with body fluids or tissue, leading to compromised surgical precision. Designing of residue-free innovative instruments would reduce the necessity of subsidiary practices and would improve the surgical precision. METHODS: We designed a ceramic coating (Lotus ceramic coating system 26-LCC-26) that exhibits self-cleaning surface properties on coated titanium specimens. A titanium surface was

Cell-mediated injectable blend hydrogel-BCP ceramic scaffold for in situ condylar osteochondral repair.

The existing approaches for healing mandibular condylar osteochondral defects, which are prevalent in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), are sparse and not reparative. To address this, regenerative medicine in situ has transpired as a potential therapeutic solution as it can effectively regenerate composite tissues. Herein, injectable self-crosslinking thiolated hyaluronic acid (HA-SH)/type I collagen (Col I) blend hydrogel and BCP ceramics combined with rabbit bone mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs)/chondrocytes were used to fabricate a new bi-layer scaffold to simulate specific structure …

Vaccination with influenza hemagglutinin-loaded ceramic nanoporous microneedle arrays induces protective immune responses.

Microneedle arrays (MNAs) are a promising mean to administer vaccines. Without the need of highly trained personnel, MNAs can be applied to deliver vaccines into the dermis, which is well equipped to initiate potent immune responses. While vaccination using dissolving microneedle arrays has been extensively investigated, the use of solid nanoporous MNAs (npMNAs) to deliver vaccines remained largely unexplored. In this report we investigated whether npMNAs with an average pore size of 80 nm, can be used for influenza vaccination based on recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the 2009 pandem

Angulating-Distraction Ulnar Osteotomy and Interpositional Phosphocalcic Ceramic Wedge Graft for a Chronic Monteggia Lesion.

BACKGROUND: Various types of osteotomies have been used to facilitate reduction of the radial head and to prevent recurrent subluxation. The Bouyala technique - open reduction of radial head associated with open wedge ulnar osteotomy with or without annular ligament reconstruction, is presently the most widely used treatment for long- standing traumatic dislocation of the radial head, independently of age, in the absence of osteoarthritis remodeling, and should preferably be performed within 1 year of trauma. METHOD: In this article, we present a similar case operated by same technique, but w

Could larger diameter of 4th generation ceramic bearing decrease the rate of dislocation after THA?

BACKGROUND: Fourth generation (Delta) ceramic bearing was developed to reduce dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA) by increasing the head diameter. We tested a hypothesis that 32/36 mm Delta ceramic bearing decreases the dislocation rate. We also evaluated ceramic-related complications and early outcome of this thin liner-on-large head ceramic bearing. METHODS: We performed a prospective study on patients who underwent THA with use of 32/36 mm Delta ceramic bearing. The dislocation rate was compared with the historical dislocation rate of third generation 28 mm ceramic bearing. We a
