Repetitive movements impose distinct loading regimens on long bones, potentially eliciting predictable osteogenic responses and morphological change. Cortical responses to such movements are seldom investigated along whole diaphyses as opposed to selected locations. Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is characterized by lipid granuloma in the long tubular bones, which leads to pathognomonic symmetrical sclerosis of their metaphyses and diaphyses. Lipid granuloma may also be present in numerous other mesenchymal tissues, especially lung, orbit and retroperitoneal space. The clinical course and prognosis of the disease depend on these lesions. Reviewing 30 cases published since 1931 and a personal case with S100 positive cells, we present the typical radiological and clinical findings. There is striking resemblance to chronic disseminated histiocytosis X.

Bone density and ash were measured in diaphyses of osteopetrotic and normal chicken tibiotarsi. In lesions of less than one year's duration, osteopetrotic bone was less dense than disease-free bone. The new osteopetrotic bone yielded approximately the same ash content per unit bone dry weight, as did disease-free bone of comparable age, but there was consistently less ash per unit bone wet volume in the diseased bones. This indicates that, in its early stages, osteopetrosis is characterized by spongy bone that lacks dense mineral deposition.

Investigations on the load capacity of an ultrasonic weld in transverse fractures, oblique fractures, and multiple fragment fractures by means of homologous bone fragments and Fimomed were taken up in vitro on 84 human femur diaphyses. It was possible to demonstrate the essential influence of the form of the fracture on the stability of the weld. The mechanical density was the highest in transverse fractures, small in oblique fractures, and the smallest in multiple fragment fractures. Conclusions were drawn up for the clinical use.

We report on clinical and radiologic manifestations in a 3-generation Japanese family with Engelmann disease (ED) or progressive diaphyseal dysplasia. A large variation of phenotype was remarkable among 12 affected family members. The Pierre-Marie-Bamberger syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by bronchial carcinoma. Typical signs are symmetric periostoses on the diaphyses of the long tubular bones, clubbed fingers and toes with eye-glass shape of the nails, neuro-vegetative disturbances and dysproteinemia. We report a 37-year-old patient with long-term nicotine abusus, who attracted attention by symptoms of a Pierre-Marie-Bamberger syndrome. Further diagnostics revealed a tumor in the apex of the left lung. After lobectomy of the upper lobe of the left lung the symptoms are completly disappeared.

The authors report six cases from six different families of lethal brittle bone disease with narrow diaphyses and thin ribs. This phenotype should be dissociated from the lethal forms of osteogenesis imperfecta and encompass two diseases. Scanning electron microscopic studies of the skeleton showed normal intercartilaginous septa in the metaphyses of long bones, covered by uniform, calcifying globules 1 mum in diameter.
