Anterior uveitis secondary to intraocular fiber from a hair enhancement product.

PURPOSE: To report a case of anterior uveitis caused by migration of cosmetic "hair-building fibers" into the anterior chamber and discuss previous literature describing ocular disease caused by small foreign fibers. OBSERVATIONS: A 73 year old male presented with his first episode of acute anterior uveitis. He was found to have a white fiber penetrating through the cornea into the anterior chamber. This foreign body was removed. The patient identified the material as a being from the cosmetic hair-building fiber product he had been using called Toppik. He was treated with topical steroids an

Removal of an intraperitoneal foreign body using a single port laparoscopic procedure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To remove a foreign body from the peritoneal cavity in laparoscopic surgery, 2 or 3 ports are usually used. We have recently performed such a removal using a single 10-mm transumbilical port, a 0-degree laparoscope, a Farabeuf retractor, and a laparoscopic grasping forceps. METHODS: Two patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter (V-P shunt) were admitted to our unit during the last year. They previously had a shunt catheter implanted for hydrocephalus of unknown cause. The complete migration of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter into the peritoneal cavit

Retained orbital wooden foreign body: a surgical technique and rationale.

OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the potential complications of a retained orbital wooden foreign body (WFB) and the rationale of a surgical technique. DESIGN: Two interventional case reports. PARTICIPANTS: Two patients sustained an orbital WFB injury. Both patients had ocular complications despite repeated attempts to remove the suspected residues. INTERVENTION: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of both patients at different intervals revealed evidence of orbital foreign body migration toward the cranium. A surgical technique combing transcranial and orbital approaches was used to

Transabdominal migration of a gossypiboma to the thoracic cavity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Textiloma, or gossypiboma, is a rare oversight in thoracic surgery involving retained surgical sponges, with the potential for serious complications like chronic pain and infection. This case highlights a 29-year-old woman with a transdiaphragmatic migrated gossypiboma following liver surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A-29 years old woman presented with dyspnea, abdominal pain, and fever, with imaging revealing a suspected hepatic abscess. Surgical intervention identified a 15 cm gossypiboma in the thoracic cavity, previously misdiagnosed, leading to successful extraction and recovery

Intraperitoneal migration of a hookwire following wide local excision of a breast lesion presenting as a spontaneous pneumothorax.

Hookwire migration is a rare complication of wide local excision surgery for breast neoplasia. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman who presented to hospital with acute on chronic left upper quadrant and left scapular pain. She had undergone a hookwire-guided wide local excision of a right breast neoplasm 5 years previously. Her vital signs, clinical examination and blood test were unremarkable. A CT scan revealed a left-sided pneumothorax and a 20 cm metallic intraperitoneal foreign body transpiercing the diaphragm. A review of the patient's clinical record revealed that she experienced

[Migration of an axillary plexus catheter fragment : A severed catheter tip unnoticed on removal wandered into the central nervous system].

MIGRATION OF AN AXILLARY PLEXUS CATHETER FRAGMENT INTO THE INTRACEREBRAL COMPARTMENT: During removal of an axillary plexus catheter used for pain therapy, the catheter was probably inadvertently and unnoticed severed together with the suture fixation. The error went unnoticed and an approximately 14 cm long catheter fragment remained in the patient. The patient complained of neck pain, nausea and vomiting 2.5 years later. A computed tomography scan of the cranium and neck region revealed a tubular foreign body with a diameter of ca. 1 mm and a length of ca. 14 cm. The foreign body was identifi

Rapport de cas Surgical retrieval of a migrated vascular access port catheter in a dog.

A 4-year-old spayed female Boston terrier was diagnosed with a suspected meningioma involving the optic chiasm and resulting in vision loss. A vascular access port (VAP) was placed in the left medial saphenous vein to facilitate frequent anesthetic episodes for radiation therapy. Five days after placement, the VAP was nonfunctional with the silicone catheter still intact. During VAP removal surgery, it was discovered that the silicone catheter had migrated. Intraoperative focal ultrasound could not identify the migrated catheter within the pelvic limb. Thoracic computed tomography identified t

Intentional Ingestion of a Metallic Wire Causing Perforation and Retroperitoneal Abscess: A Case Report.

Foreign body ingestion is a frequent condition, with the majority of foreign bodies (FBs) tending to spontaneously proceed along the gastrointestinal tract without any major complications. A wide range of procedures are available to remove FBs; however, a real challenge exists in managing sharp, rigid, and long foreign objects, which are related to higher rates of complications. A 34-year-old man who intentionally swallowed a metallic wire of 20 cm length, presented to our ED with abdominal pain 2 weeks after the ingestion. The FB had migrated to the stomach and duodenum. Complications include

Endoclip migration after laparoscopic splenectomy combined with pericardial devascularization: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Endoclip migration(ECM) after laparoscopic splenectomy combined with pericardial devascularization (LESD) is a rare and dangerous postoperative complication. The emergence of such cases led to our consideration of the timing of use of nonabsorbable endoclips. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a patient with cirrhosis and portal hypertension who underwent LESD. Two years after the operation, an endoclip was found in the fornix of the fundus of his stomach by gastroscopy. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: A 66-year-old male patient had a history of liver cirrhosis f

A case of surgical instrument left in the abdomen and taken out of the transverse colon.

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies cause an aseptic reaction that does not have specific symptoms and may also result in peritonitis, acute abdominal pain, an intraperitoneal abscess, or intestinal obstruction or perforation. We present a case of a surgical instrument left in the abdomen that passed into the transverse colon via migration after a surgery. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 36-year-old female patient was operated upon, with a diagnosis of a hydatid cyst in her liver. Approximately 3 years after the surgery, she excreted part of a surgical forceps with her stool while she was defecating. In upright d

Practical applications of 3D sonography in gynecologic imaging.

Volume imaging in the pelvis has been well demonstrated to be an extremely useful technique, largely based on its ability to reconstruct the coronal plane of the uterus that usually cannot be visualized using traditional 2-dimensional (2D) imaging. As a result, this technique is now a part of the standard pelvic ultrasound protocol in many institutions. A variety of valuable applications of 3D sonography in the pelvis are discussed in this article.

The width of the uterine cavity is narrower in patients with an embedded intrauterine device (IUD) compared to a normally positioned IUD.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether women with intrauterine devices (IUDs) embedded in the myometrium or cervix have a narrower fundal transverse endometrial diameter as seen on 3-dimensional (3D) sonography compared to women whose IUDs are in a normal location. METHODS: A sonographer blinded to the study hypothesis retrospectively evaluated the 3D images and reconstructed coronal views of the uterine cavity in 172 consecutive women who had an IUD in the uterus. The width of the endometrial cavity at the fundus of the uterus was measured transversely on the rendered

Intracranial migrating bullet.

Retained bullets and fragments following a civilian gunshot injury are quite frequent in practical neurosurgery. It is usually possible to extract the foreign body surgically, while rare cases are conservatively treated because of technical reasons. Conservative treatment may present complications, and a rare form of this presentation is migration of the bullet. A 20-year-old man presented with migrating bullet from a supratentorial to opposite infratentorial area. We consider that in the migrating bullet fragment cases, if there is no contraindication, the most reasonable treatment is its urg

Unusual migration of a tooth root into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction: a case report and literature review.

Iatrogenic foreign bodies of dental origin are rare and frequently involve the maxillary sinuses. We report an unusual case of tooth-root migration into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction. A 54-year-old woman with a history of maxillary left molar extraction 6 months prior presented with symptoms of left nasal obstruction, green malodorous nasal discharge, hyposmia, and left-sided facial pressure for 3 months. She was diagnosed with unilateral sinusitis, and nasal endoscopy revealed severe left middle meatus edema with thick pus discharge. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses re

The Hemoptysis and the Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm due to a Fishbone Injury: A Case Report.

Ingestion of a foreign body is a common cause of esophageal injury, but hemoptysis is a rare manifestation of the esophageal penetration by a swallowed foreign body. The swallowing of a fishbone is hard to diagnose and the definite diagnosis is usually made during surgery. We describe the case of a 50-year-old man with direct injury to the lung parenchyma, the azygos vein, and the subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm due to a fishbone penetration from the upper esophagus into the lung. To our knowledge, this is the first case report that we know of in which a swallowed foreign body that penetrated

A Strange Case of Downward Displacement of a Deep Brain Stimulation Electrode 10 Years Following Implantation: The Gliding Movement of Snakes Theory.

BACKGROUND: Despite the best efforts to ensure stereotactic precision, deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes can wander from their intended position after implantation. We report a case of downward electrode migration 10 years following successful implantation in a patient with Parkinson disease. METHODS: A 53-year-old man with Parkinson disease underwent bilateral implantation of DBS electrodes connected to a subclavicular 2-channel pulse generator. The generator was replaced 7 years later, and a computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the correct position of both leads. The patient develo

Stroke from delayed embolization of polymerized glue following percutaneous direct injection of a carotid body tumor.

A 52-year-old male with right carotid body tumor underwent direct percutaneous glue (n-butylcyanoacrylate [NBCA]) embolization. Several hours later, he developed left hemiparesis from embolization of the polymerized glue cast. Migration of glue during percutaneous tumor embolization is presumed to occur only in the liquid state, which may lead to stroke or cranial nerve deficits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of delayed glue embolization from a treated hypervascular tumor of the head and neck.

Late dislocation of an anterior chamber intraocular lens into the vitreous.

We report the case of a patient with dislocation of an anterior chamber intraocular lens (AC IOL) into the vitreous, 5 years after surgery. The cause of the dislocation may have been the size of the pupil and habitual eye rubbing. This case report describes a rare complication of AC IOL implantation in eyes of previous iris lesions or pupil abnormalities. This complication should be kept in mind when an AC IOL implantation is planned for the correction of aphakia.
