Simulated self-motion alters perceived time to collision.

Many authors have assumed that motor actions required for collision avoidance and for collision achievement (for example, in driving a car o … ng, tau provides an accurate estimate of TTC regardless of whether the approach is produced by self-motion, object-motion or a combination of both. One might therefore expect that judgements of TTC would be independent of self-motion. We report here, however, that simulated selfmotion using a peripheral flow field substantially altered estimates of TTC f …

Predictive efficacy of motion sickness history for airsickness.

BACKGROUND: Airsickness is a common problem in the early stage of flying training. It can be sufficiently severe to impair the student's flight performance and his ability to learn. Without adequate evaluation and rehabilitation, intractable airsickness symptoms will force student pilots to be permanently grounded. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive efficacy of motion sickness history for airsickness of flight students. METHODS: A motion sickness history questionnaire with four different scores was used to predict airsickness of student pilots in the Air Force Academy. T…

Airsickness and aircraft motion during short-haul flights.

BACKGROUND: There is little quantitative information that can be used to predict the incidence of airsickness from the motions experienced in military or civil aviation. This study examines the relationship between low-frequency aircraft motion and passenger sickness in short-haul turboprop flights within the United Kingdom. METHODS: A questionnaire survey of 923 fare-paying passengers was conducted on 38 commercial airline flights. Concurrent measurements of aircraft motion were made on all journeys, yielding approximately 30 h of aircraft motion data. RESULTS: Overall, 0.5% of passengers r…

Effects of motion blurring in x-ray fluoroscopy.

In conventional fluoroscopy, continuous x-ray exposure blurs moving objects, while in pulsed fluoroscopy, short duration x-ray pulses acquire images without motion blur. Many perception experiments on noisy image sequences are consistent with low-pass temporal filtering by the human visual system, and this is anticipated to cause visual system "blurring" of moving objects. With moving cylinders in spatially white noise, we simulated 30 acq/s (acquisitions per second), continuous fluoroscopy having both x-ray and visual system motion blur. We also simulated pulsed fluoroscopy at 30 acq/s (pulse…

Motion automated perimetry identifies early glaucomatous field defects.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if motion automated perimetry can identify early glaucomatous visual field defects in patients with suspected glaucoma (by disc), those with ocular hypertension, and those with primary open-angle glaucoma. METHODS: Motion automated perimetry, a foveally centered motion test, and standard visual field tests were conducted on one randomly selected eye of normal patients (n = 38), patients with suspected glaucoma (by disc) (n = 28), patients with ocular hypertension (n = 18), and patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (n = 21). Subjects' performance on both motion test…

Moving cast shadows induce apparent motion in depth.

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the information provided by the motion of an object's shadow overrides other strong sources of information and perceptual biases, such as the assumption of constant object size and a general viewpoint; (ii) th…

Motion sickness in mice and conditioned taste aversion.

Forty-eight male mice in 6 groups were studied. Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) in mice was produced by various motions including cross-coupled acceleration, rotation to two directions (with or without visual field) and linear acceleration. Deprived of water for 24 hours, the mice were exposed to motion immediately after drinking a novel solution, 0.15% saccharin. All groups received two pairings of CTA training related to motion. The results showed that both of cross-coupled and rotation produced frank CTA and former was far more obvious than the latter. In addition, motion with visual field…

Chinese hyper-susceptibility to vection-induced motion sickness.

Little is known about the factors that control individual differences in susceptible to motion sickness. A serendipitous observation in our laboratory that most Chinese subjects become motion sick prompted this study. We used a rotating optokinetic drum to provoke motion sickness and compared gastric responses and symptom reports of Chinese, European-American, and African-American subjects. There was no difference in the responses of European-American and African-American subjects; however, Chinese subjects showed significantly greater disturbances in gastric activity and reported significantl…

Comparison of treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness.

Treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness were compared using the results of postflight oral debriefings. Standardized questionnaires were administered to all crewmembers immediately following Space Shuttle flights by NASA flight surgeons. Cases of Space Motion Sickness were graded as mild, moderate or severe based on published criteria, and medication effectiveness was judged based on subjective reports of symptom relief. Since October 1989, medication effectiveness is reported inflight through Private Medical Conferences with the crew. A symptom matrix was analyzed for 19 crewmembers tr…

[The motion sickness under reversing goggles (1st report)].

We observed locomotion and motion sickness in 10 normal adults wearing reversing goggles while moving outdoors. Horizontal reversal of the visual field produced moderate to severe ataxia and motion sickness in all subjects except one. There was marked variability in the sensitivity among different subjects. In contrast, vertical reversal produced no symptoms. Confusion of information relation to spatial orientation possibly caused both the motion sickness and abnormal locomotion. Horizontal reversal of visual information produces disorientation because visual information is equal in importance…

Pharmacology in space. Part 2. Controlling motion sickness.

In this second article in the two-part series on pharmacology in space, Claire Lathers and colleagues discuss the pharmacology of drugs used to control motion sickness in space and note that the pharmacology of the 'ideal' agent has yet to be worked out. That motion sickness may impair the pharmacological action of a drug by interfering with its absorption and distribution because of alteration of physiology is a problem unique to pharmacology in space. The authors comment on the problem of designing suitable ground-based studies to evaluate the pharmacological effect of drugs to be used in sp…

Fatigue fracture morphology in human lumbar motion segments.

The fatigue behavior of 17 fresh lumbar spine motion segments was examined during cyclic, axial, compressive loading. The loading frequency and magnitude were chosen to simulate vigorous physiological loading conditions. The average failure occurred after 318 such loading cycles. Two main types of failure occurred and both involved the endplate and the adjacent subchondral spongy bone of the vertebral body. A tendency was observed toward a relation between the degree of disk degeneration and fracture type. Location of the fatigue fractures corresponded to the location of earlier detected micro…

Spectral analysis of tachygastria recorded during motion sickness.

The purpose of the present experiment was to study frequency changes in gastric myoelectric activity of healthy human subjects and the development of symptoms of motion sickness as brought about by vection or illusory self-motion. Fifteen fasted healthy human subjects were seated inside a circular vection drum, the rotation of which produces visual signals of self-motion that are in conflict with vestibular signals (i.e., mismatched sensory input). An electrogastrogram was obtained for three 15-min. periods: baseline, rotation, and after drum rotation stopped. Respiration, symptoms volunteered…

Skin potential reflex corresponding to transient motion discomfort.

The qualitative and quantitative correspondence between the degree of motion discomfort and the skin potential reflex (SPR) was examined in four subjects. Head movement was provided three times during body rotation at three different angular velocities (Coriolis stimulus) to induce motion discomfort, and at rest as a control. SPRs were caused in the arousal sweat area by head movement. The wave form, latency, time-to-peak, and amplitude of SPR were analyzed. The amplitude of the depolarizing response (P response) of SPR increased proportionally to the angular velocity of body rotation and decr…

Reliability of provocative tests of motion sickness susceptibility.

Accurate prediction of space motion sickness is dependent, in part, upon the reliability of terrestrial-based motion sickness susceptibility tests. In the present study, test-retest reliability values were derived from motion sickness susceptibility scores obtained from two successive exposures to each of three tests: 1) Coriolis Sickness Sensitivity Index (CSSI); 2) Staircase Velocity Movement Test (SVMT); and 3) Parabolic Flight Static Chair Test (PSCT). The reliability of the three tests ranged from 0.70 to 0.88. Normalizing values from predictors with skewed distributions improved the reli…

Two-dimensional echocardiography. Viewing the heart in motion.

The accuracy and safety of two-dimensional echocardiography and the reproducibility of findings have led to its current prominence in the physician's diagnostic armamentarium. It has wide clinical applications, excelling in assessment of valvular heart disease, pericardial effusion, and intracavitary masses, such as vegetations and left ventricular clots. In addition, it is useful in differentiating types of cardiomyopathy and in evaluating global left ventricular systolic function. This article highlights the clinical applications of two-dimensional echocardiography, which is easily the most

Computer simulation of human motion in sports biomechanics.

This chapter has covered some important aspects of the computer simulation of human motion in sports biomechanics. First the definition and the advantages and limitations of computer simulation were discussed; second, research on various sporting activities were reviewed. These activities included basic movements, aquatic sports, track and field athletics, winter sports, gymnastics, and striking sports. This list was not exhaustive and certain material has, of necessity, been omitted. However, it was felt that a sufficiently broad and interesting range of activities was chosen to illustrate bo…

Motion sickness incidence induced by complex periodic waveforms.

Independent groups of up to 32 young men exposed in a standard seated posture to one of five conditions of vertical (Z axis) motion for up to 2 h. Exposure was less in the event of vomiting or a volunteer's voluntary withdrawal from the experiment. A control condition, sinusoidal motion of 0.17 Hz and 0.13 G R.M.S., provided the basis for comparison with the remaining four conditions, each produced by the sum of two sinusoids, the fundamental at 0.17 Hz plus the second or third harmonic. The conditions differed in the phase relationship of the fundamental and second harmonic, or in the relativ…
