INTRODUCTION: Fixed appliances limit patients' ability to clean their teeth, thus making orthodontic patients highly susceptible to developing white spot lesions (WSLs). Using patient compliance would be one of the simplest methods to prevent WSLs.
METHODS: A parallel trial design with 34 patients that met the eligibility criteria were randomized to experimental (received Blue M oxygen for health toothpaste) and control (received Colgate Total fluoridated toothpaste) groups. The eligibility criteria were that the patients should be aged 13-30 years, on fixed mechanotherapy, had undergone ther

Sotos syndrome (SS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by overgrowth, distinctive facial features, and dentofacial abnormalities. While its oral manifestations are well documented in childhood, there is limited evidence regarding dental management in adults. This case report, prepared in accordance with the CARE guidelines, describes a 28-year-old woman diagnosed with SS who presented with typical craniofacial features of the condition. The patient sought care for partial edentulism, and oral rehabilitation with removable partial dentures was planned. The treatment approach considered th

Background: Chemotherapy (CMT) in children can disrupt dental development and calcification, causing long-term dental issues, but good dental care and habits can help improve quality of life. This case report examines permanent dental disturbances in a 7-year, 4-month-old girl undergoing CMT, explores the histology of microdontia, and outlines an oral treatment plan for CMT management. Methods: Clinical examination revealed microdontia and a groove crossing the cervical area (chronological hypoplasia), which were assessed using panoramic radiographs and histological analysis. The patient was m

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical stress on the teeth and alveolar bone caused by bruxism, orthodontics, and implants affects the periodontal tissues, causing gingival recession and alveolar bone resorption, and entire body, including the heart and vascular system. Although the same forces exerted on the alveolar bone and teeth are exerted on gingival epithelial cells, little is known about the effects of mechanical stress on these cells. This study investigated the effects of mechanical stress on gingival epithelial cells.
METHODS: Ca9-22 cells (human gingival epithelial cells) were used. They were see

Accurate imaging of displaced dental materials (DMs) in soft tissues is critical for diagnosis, treatment planning, and preventing complications. The aim of this study was to compare the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and ultrasonography (USG) in detecting DMs embedded in soft tissues, as well as to characterize their imaging features. Fifteen DMs used in restorative, endodontic, orthodontic, and prosthetic procedures were placed in the alveolar mucosa and muscles. CBCT and USG images of DMs were obtained. Two dentomaxillofacial radiologists independently evaluated the images for detecta

PURPOSE: Fixed retainers have been advocated for the prevention of anterior mandibular crowding after orthodontic treatment. However, limited data is available to help clinicians choose a retention protocol that is acceptable in terms of stability, emergencies, and side effects in the long term. It was the aim of this study to assess survival and alignment stability of the 0.016" x 0.022" stainless steel wire compared to more common protocols.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different mandibular fixed retention protocols were compared in 600 consecutive patients: 1. 0.0215" multistrand wire (MW)

BACKGROUND: Residual snoring in children with obstructive sleep disordered breathing (SDB) may continue post-adenotonsillectomy. This study aims to identify baseline dentofacial differences in children with SDB using routine orthodontic records that might aid effective early intervention for the upper airway to prevent continued obstruction.
METHODS: Children (6-16 years) with clinically diagnosed SDB from a paediatric Otolaryngology Clinic who required adenotonsillectomy were participants (n = 10). The control group (n = 9) comprised healthy non-snoring children from the community. Baseline

Inverted tooth impaction is a rare occurrence. Third molar impaction is the most extensively studied, and only eight cases of inverted third molars have been reported in a literature search of 40 years from 1973 to 2013. In a study, 43.4% of the premaxillary supernumeraries were inverted and 21.1% were transversely oriented, while occasional inverted central incisors have been mentioned in the literature. Severe dilaceration makes the management of this case a big challenge. The case of an 8-year-old boy with an inverted, rotated, and impacted upper left central incisor obstructed by an odonto

BACKGROUND: Shallow upper buccal sulcus deformity in cleft lip and palate patients is one of the common secondary deformities after primary cleft lip and palate repair; this deformity may prevent or complicate orthodontic and prosthodontic procedures causing aesthetic and functional problems. A number of methods are described to increase the anterior maxillary sulcus in these patients.
PURPOSE: This study assessed the use of a carbon dioxide laser (CO2) to increase the sulcus depth.
METHOD: Fifteen patients with cleft lip and palate (eight unilateral and seven bilateral) were studied. The su

Introduction: Studies have been conducted to develop a means of preventing, controlling or reducing orthodontically induced root resorption. Phototherapy has demonstrated effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory and, considering the inflammatory origin of this pathology, this study evaluated the effects of laser on root resorption. Methods: The research was conducted among 54 80-day-old male Wistar rats, with weights of 280 ± 40 g. Phototherapy consisted of a diode laser (Ga-Al-As), calibrated with a wavelength of 808 nm, an output power of 100 mW, 2.1 J or 96 J of energy and area of 0.0028 cm2.

Recently, involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in bone metabolism has attracted attention. β2-Adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) is presented on osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells. We previously demonstrated that β-AR blockers at low dose improve osteoporosis with hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system via β2-AR blocking, while they may have a somewhat inhibitory effect on osteoblastic activity at high doses. In this study, the effects of butoxamine (BUT), a specific β2-AR antagonist, on tooth movement were examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) showing osteoporosis with

Obesity is a growth-promoting process as evidenced by its effect on the timing of puberty. Although studies are limited, obesity has been shown to affect the timing of tooth eruption. Both the timing and sequence of tooth eruption are important to overall oral health. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between obesity and tooth eruption. Data were combined from three consecutive cycles (2001-2006) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and analyzed to examine associations between the number of teeth erupted (NET) and obesity status (BMI z-score >
