[Experimental studies of the biomechanics of scaphoid screws].

The purpose of this study was to determine the anchoring forces of four commonly used scaphoid screws in synthetic polyurethane foam. A linear relation was found between the length of the probe and the anchoring forces. The leading thread of the Herbert screw showed a anchoring force of 54 N/mm, the trailing thread 80 N/mm, and the Ulrich screw 75 N/mm. This linear relation of the shaft screws was only relevant upto a border probe length no longer that of the thread. Furthermore, it is valid for screws with continuous threads up to a probe length of 12 mm respectively. The cortical screw devel

Striking Differences in Kendo Headgear.

BACKGROUND: Kendo, a martial art developed by the samurai, is rooted deep in Japanese culture with traditional armor that has seen little change over the past centuries. Despite its century-old design, kendo helmets are manufactured without third-party testing to verify their quality and effectiveness against head trauma. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different helmet stitching patterns and padding materials in mitigating impact forces that could lead to sports-related concussions (SRC) in kendo, and to assess variations in safety performance across different genders and kendo r

Topology optimization of a mandibular reconstruction plate and biomechanical validation.

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction plates, used to bridge segmental defects of the mandible after tumor resection or traumatic bone tissue loss, are subjected to repeated stresses of mastication. High stress concentrations in these plates can result in hardware failure. Topology optimization (TO) could reduce the peak stress by computing the most optimal material distribution in a patient-specific implant (PSI) used for mandibular reconstruction. The objective of this study was biomechanical validation of a TO-PSI. METHODS: A computer-aided design (CAD) model with a segmental defect was created based

Assessment of carboxyhemoglobin, hydrogen cyanide and methemoglobin in fire victims: a novel approach.

To establish the cause of death, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), total hemoglobin (tHb), methemoglobin (MetHb), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were quantified in the blood of fire victims. We analyzed 32 out of 33 blood samples from forensic autopsy cases in a disastrous polyurethane mattress fire, which caused the deaths of 33 inmates at a prison in Argentina in 2006. The cadaveric blood samples were collected by femoral vein puncture. These samples were analyzed using the IL80 CO-oximeter system for tHb, MetHb, and COHb levels and by microdiffusion for HCN and COHb levels. Blood alcohol (ethanol) and

Packing media regulate nitric oxide removal performance by driving community assembly and biofilm evolution in biotrickling filters.

Packing media are essential for optimizing biotrickling filter (BTF) design and pollutant removal efficiency, yet how their integrated physicochemical properties affect the performance by regulating community assembly and biofilm evolution remains unclear. This study compared two parallel BTFs packed with activated carbon (AC) granules (BTFAC) and polyurethane (PU) sponge (BTFPU) for nitric oxide (NO) removal, and tested their resilience to starvation. BTFPU achieved significantly higher and more stable NO removal than BTFAC during both pre-starvation (99% ± 1% over 94% ± 5%) and post-starvati

Decrease of radiation-induced skin reactions in breast cancer patients by preventive application of film dressings-a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced skin reactions remain one of the most frequent side effects of adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer, which is the most common global malignancy. In individual cases, we observed a decrease in radiation dermatitis under film dressings used for skin marking purposes. Therefore, we decided to revise the available evidence regarding the prophylactic use of film dressings to reduce radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients. METHODS: On 20 March 2023, we conducted a systematic review of literature for randomized controlled trials published in the English, German,

A comparison of Lyoband with cotton wool as a lining for plaster casts.

Polyurethane foam bandage (Lyoband) was compared with conventional cotton wool bandage of similar dimensions as a lining in below-knee walking plasters used for the immobilization of fractures of one malleolus. A device was designed to measure the potential space between the limb and the plaster and therefore the loosening of the cast. By virtue of its expansile nature, the Lyoband lining proved a considerably more satisfactory material than cotton wool bandage.

DLP 3D-Printed High-Performance Polymers with Photothermal Dual-Curing Resin Containing Hydrogen Bonds and Reversible Covalent Bonds.

Photocuring 3D printing faces challenges in achieving high mechanical strength and thermal stability primarily due to the low conversion degree of photopolymerization. This study presents a molecular design strategy to develop a high-performance, photothermal dual-curing resin for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. A polyurethane acrylate containing multiple hydrogen bonds and dynamic hindered urea bonds is synthesized and compounded with an acrylate-modified epoxy monomer, a reactive diluent, and a latent hindered urea curing agent to construct the hybrid system. During the photocuri

Treatment of Hypertrophic Granulation Tissue: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic granulation tissue (HGT) is an uncommon but a frustrating complication of wound healing. Given its low prevalence and often refractory nature, many treatment options have been explored. OBJECTIVE: No comprehensive review exists on HGT management in dermatology literature; thus, the authors hope to compile a review of available treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An exhaustive key word search of 3 databases was performed for treatment of HGT. Results from these reports were summarized in this review. RESULTS: Methods of treatment included silver nitrate, topical stero

Lab-simulated downhole leaching of formaldehyde from proppants by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), headspace gas chromatography-vacuum ultraviolet (HS-GC-VUV) spectroscopy, and headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS).

The ability of different methods to analyze formaldehyde and other leachates from proppants was investigated under lab-simulated downhole conditions. These methods include high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), headspace gas chromatography-vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy (HS-GC-VUV), and headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). Two different types of resin-coated proppants, phenol-formaldehyde- and polyurethane-based, were examined. Each proppant was tested at different time intervals (1, 4, 15, 20, or 25 hours) to determine the timeframe for chemical dissolution. Ana

Fabrication of biocompatible hydrogel coatings for implantable medical devices using Fenton-type reaction.

In this paper the authors present a simple method of coating polyurethane (PU) surface with poly(vinyl pirrolidone) (PVP) hydrogel. The hydrogel-coated materials were designed for use in biomedical applications, especially in blood-contacting devices. The coating is formed due to free radical macromolecular grafting-crosslinking. Polymer surface was first immersed in an organic solution containing radical source: cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) with an addition of a branching and anchoring agent: ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (EGDMA). In the second step, the substrate was immersed in a water sol

The fate of breast implants: a critical analysis of complications and outcomes.

Complications and outcomes were monitored following the implantation of 1655 breast implants over a 15-year period. Smooth, polyurethane, and textured implants were used in a variety of clinical settings. The time course of capsular contracture was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Regardless of implant type or indication for surgery, the probability of contracture increased with time. Polyurethane-covered implants were associated with a significant reduction in the risk of contracture for at least 7 years following implantation. Smooth and textured silicone implants had contracture rates s

Enhancing Polyhydroxyurethane Properties via the Formation of Dioxaborolane- and Dioxazaborocane Vitrimers.

While polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) have been offered as "greener" alternatives to conventional polyurethanes (PUs) for ∼15 years, their low molecular weights, high hydrophilicity, and water uptake limit practical utility. In this study, we directly address these limitations by coupling pendant hydroxyl groups in tailored thermoplastic PHUs with 1,4-phenylenediboronic acid to form tough, robust PHU vitrimers, whose enhanced viscoelastic properties and reduced moisture sensitivity significantly differentiate them from existing linear and vitrimeric PHUs. Three families of PHU vitrimers incorporat…

Nanocellulose Removes the Need for Chemical Crosslinking in Tannin-Based Rigid Foams and Enhances Their Strength and Fire Retardancy.

Thermal insulation and fire protection are two of the most critical features affecting energy efficiency and safety in built environments. Together with the associated environmental footprint, there is a strong need to consider new insulation materials. Tannin rigid foams have been proposed as viable and sustainable alternatives to expanded polyurethanes, traditionally used in building enveloping. Tannin foams structure result from polymerization with furfuryl alcohol via self-expanding. We further introduce cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as a reinforcing agent that eliminates the need for chemi…

Bioinspired All-in-One Wound Dressing: Integrating Photothermal-Enhanced Drainage and Strain-Sensing Monitoring for Intelligent Healing.

The effective management of chronically infected wounds faces numerous challenges, with the core difficulty lying in achieving efficient liquid drainage and continuous antibacterial effects. Inspired by the asymmetric wetting property of Pistia stratiotes, this study designed a biomimetic asymmetric bilayer electrospun nanofiber membrane. This membrane consists of an upper hydrophilic polyurethane (modified with a tannic acid/iron (TA/Fe3+) and AgNWs complex) and a lower hydrophobic polyurethane. Driven by the wetting gradient at the interface, the liquid can be directly pumped from the hydrop

Sea-Island Micelle Structured Hydrogel Scaffold: A Dual-Action Approach to Combat Cartilage Damage under RA Conditions.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune joint disease characterized by persistent synovial inflammation and cartilage damage. The current clinical treatments primarily utilize drugs such as triptolide (TP) to address inflammation, yet they are unable to directly repair damaged cartilage. Furthermore, the persistent inflammation often undermines the effectiveness of traditional cartilage repair strategies, preventing them from achieving optimal outcomes. To tackle this challenge, this study successfully developed a drug-loaded polyurethane hydrogel-oriented porous scaffold, designed to
