The emotional mechanism underlying the adverse effect of social exclusion on working memory performance: A tDCS study.

Social exclusion has been found to impair working memory (WM). However, the emotional mechanism underlying this adverse effect remains unclear. Besides, little is known about how to alleviate this adverse effect. In the current study, 128 participants were randomly assigned to a social excluded group or an included group while they received anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or sham tDCS over the right ventrolateral pre-frontal cortex (rVLPFC), then they completed the 2-back task. ANOVA results showed that under the sham tDCS condition, mood rating score and 2-back task accu

Effect of Infant Presence on Social Networks of Sterilized and Intact Wild Female Balinese Macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Contraception is increasingly used to control wild animal populations. However, as reproductive condition influences social interactions in primates, the absence of new offspring could influence the females' social integration. We studied two groups of wild macaques (Macaca fascicularis) including females recently sterilized in the Ubud Monkey Forest, Indonesia. We used social network analysis to examine female grooming and proximity networks and investigated the role of infant presence on social centrality and group connectivity, while controlling for the fertility status (sterilized N = 14,

Reproductive decision-making in the context of inheritable conditions that affect appearance: Lived experiences and perspectives.

Inheritable conditions that affect appearance can influence a range of life experiences shaped by social, emotional, and cultural factors. For individuals with such conditions (e.g., craniofacial conditions), considerations about having children may be further complicated by the possibility of passing on the condition and its associated social challenges. This study explored how the visibility of inheritable conditions that affect appearance influences reproductive decision-making, with particular attention to decisions about having children and the use of reproductive technologies. Semi-struc

[Social behavior of the Wedge-capped Capuchin monkey Cebus olivaceus (Primates: Cebidae) in three zoological exhibits of Caracas, Venezuela].

Captivity represents an extreme situation for primates, especially for those with large home ranges, and its effect on their behavior might be considerable. The Wedge-capped Capuchin Monkey Cebus olivaceus is the most common primate in Venezuelan zoos. To estimate the effect of confinement on C. olivaceus behavior, we analyzed the social behavior of three groups that differed in captivity conditions, in zoological exhibits in Caracas (Caricuao, Parque del Este, El Pinar). Caricuao's group moved freely over a non-fenced area of 15 ha, Parque del Este's and El Pinar's groups lived in relatively

Investigating trade-offs between ovary activation and immune protein expression in bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) workers and queens.

Evidence for a trade-off between reproduction and immunity has manifested in many animal species, including social insects. However, investigations in social insect queens present a conundrum: new gynes of many social hymenopterans, such as bumble bees and ants, must first mate, then transition from being solitary to social as they establish their nests, thus experiencing confounding shifts in environmental conditions. Worker bumble bees offer an opportunity to investigate patterns of immune protein expression associated with ovary activation while minimizing extraneous environmental factors a

The prevalence of using beta-blockers and its relationship with social anxiety among health profession students at Umm Al-Qura University.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by excessive fear of scrutiny in social situations. Health students are more susceptible to SAD due to academic demands. They may resort to self-medication, particularly beta-blockers (BBs) for managing physical symptoms of SAD. The study aims to investigate the prevalence of beta-blocker use and its relationship with social anxiety disorder among health students at Umm Al-Qura University. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 461 undergraduate health students participated in a questionnaire with 30 questions div

Content Analysis of Social Support, and Disease Framing of Klinefelter Syndrome and Down Syndrome: Social Support, Framing and Decision Tendencies.

The Internet plays a crucial role for people searching for health information. In the context of parents faced with a prenatal diagnosis of a chromosomal abnormality, Internet-based resources convey critical information and attitudes that bear on the process of healthcare decision-making. In this study, we collected and analyzed 268 websites for Klinefelter syndrome and Down syndrome, which are two of the most common genetic conditions marked by an abnormal number of chromosomes. While these two syndromes are quite different in terms of their associated symptoms and health consequences, they a

[Representation of self-care of health at work among urban bus drivers in Guadalajara, Mexico].

This study aimed to analyze the social representations of health self-care at work among urban bus drivers in Guadalajara, Mexico. The methodology was qualitative, with a multi-method design based on the theory of social representations. The first stage involved active observation sessions with the information recorded in field notes; in the second stage, the associative letter technique and successively hierarchized trees technique were applied to 20 drivers, submitting the data to a classical analysis of the free associations; a third stage involved semi-structured interviews with 4 drivers,

Training climate matters: programmatic openness, individual belonging, and trainee mistreatment in graduate medical education.

BACKGROUND: Medical trainee mistreatment remains a widespread challenge in graduate medical education, contributing to burnout, depression, and workforce attrition. Graduate medical education programs have sought to create safer learning environments by fostering programmatic openness-climates perceived as transparent, welcoming, and supportive. Yet it remains unclear how such programmatic conditions interact with individual experiences of belonging to shape wellbeing. Drawing on ecological systems theory, we examine how programmatic openness and trainee belonging interact to mitigate trainee

Social and monetary incentives counteract fear-driven avoidance: Evidence from approach-avoidance decisions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The reduction of avoidance behavior is a central target in the treatment of anxiety disorders, but it has rarely been studied how approach of fear-relevant stimuli may be initiated. In two studies, the impact of hypothetical monetary and symbolic social incentives on approach-avoidance behavior was examined. METHODS: In Study 1, individuals high or low on fear of spiders (N = 84) could choose to approach a fear-relevant versus a neutral stimulus, which were equally rewarded. In a subsequent micro-intervention, approaching the fear-relevant stimulus was differentiall

Authoritarianism and attitudes toward mental health services.

Right-wing authoritarians have been shown to resist change and to demonstrate hostility toward out-groups and social movements that may advocate change from traditional and conventional beliefs. Using data from the Louisville Metropolitan Survey, an omnibus survey of 771 adults interviewed by telephone, the authors investigated the relationship between right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and attitudes toward mental health services. The findings of the bivariate and regression analyses indicated that high scorers on a version of B. Altemeyer's (1988) RWA index were more likely to hold negative at

Micro enterprise initiative in water sector and poverty reduction .

The author reports on the Kerala model for water sector development, broadly adopted as a role model for poverty reduction and build up of social capital. It is a community based organisation with its focus on facilitating a stable income to the poor, and composed of a People's Plan Campaign, the Kudumbashree (women-based poverty eradication programme), with grassroot level neighbourhood groups, federated into an area development society. It promotes savings and credit channelling, capacity building and entrepreneurship development. Activities include awareness raising on water conservation an

Role of body dissatisfaction in the onset and maintenance of eating pathology: a synthesis of research findings.

OBJECTIVE: Recent findings implicate body dissatisfaction in the development and maintenance of eating pathology. This paper reviews theory and empirical findings regarding the putative origins and consequences of body dissatisfaction because recent findings have not been synthesized or critically evaluated and because these findings have key etiologic and prevention implications. METHODS: A computer-assisted literature review was conducted to locate relevant prospective and experimental studies. RESULTS: There is evidence that perceived pressure to be thin, thin-ideal internalization and el

Syphilis 2001--a palaeopathological reappraisal.

The origin and subsequent spread of the treponematoses, especially that of venereal syphilis, has been the subject of considerable scientific attention. Various theories were put forth and palaeopathological specimens were used for their validation in recent times. One influential contribution was the paper by Baker & Armelagos in 1988. Numerous new findings and results on both sides of the Atlantic call for a new evaluation of the available osseous material. A review of the recent literature leads to the suggestion of a worldwide distribution of non-venereal treponemal disease since the emerg

[Poverty and HIV/AIDS: anthropological and sociological aspects].

Focusing on the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a summation of several epidemics coexisting in the same space and drawing on Brazilian epidemiological data, we argue that the epidemic there shows variations already described elsewhere, such as feminization, pauperization, juvenization and interiorization, as a result of the deep inequalities characteristic of Brazilian society. We then examine the contributions of three bodies of sociological and anthropological literature related to HIV/AIDS: 1) sociological research and theory on the impact of recent global economic restructuring and social transformat

Psychiatric symptomatology associated with contemporary peacekeeping: an examination of post-mission functioning among peacekeepers in Somalia.

Contemporary peacekeepers frequently confront complex stressors including the need to directly enforce peace between warring factions, to deliver humanitarian aid in the midst of political-social devastation, and to balance shifting rules of engagement. As such, it is proposed that participants may be at increased risk for the development of psychiatric distress. The present study examined the types of stressors encountered by 3,461 peacekeepers in Somalia, their current psychiatric functioning as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the relationship between exposure to various stresso
