Vestibular-visual conflict in pitch and yaw planes in the squirrel monkey.

Direction conflicting vestibular and visual (optokinetic) stimuli either in the pitch or yaw plane were given to squirrel monkey subjects. The conflict sickness symptom score in the pitch plane was significantly higher than that in the yaw plane for the initial exposure session (p less than 0.01). A significant score difference was also encountered when the exposure sessions were repeated (p less than 0.05).

Vestibular Meniere's disease.

The clinical entity of vestibular Meniere's disease (VMD) is assessed and described. Twenty percent of cases eventuating in typical Meniere's disease presented with VMD first. In other patients VMD alone persisted for many years (30 or more). VMD, usually unilateral, is characterized by recurrent episodes of vertigo typical of classical Meniere's disease. Positional vertigo can occur between or during episodes. Aural pressure is second to vertigo in importance, and electronystagmographic findings are third. Although hearing is normal, tinnitus or loudness intolerance may be present. Concepts o

Multidirectional and computerized tomography of the vestibular aqueduct in Meniere's disease.

Multidirectional and computerized tomography have been used for the radiographic assessment of the vestibular aqueduct in Meniere's disease. The results of studies performed by us and/or other authors indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in the size of the vestibular aqueduct between the Meniere's and control groups (in Meniere's disease the vestibular aqueduct is often narrowed or obliterated); and that periaqueductal pneumatization is often decreased or absent in ears affected by Meniere's disease. Recent histological studies performed on temporal bones of patients w

Susceptibility to motion sickness and the development of anticipatory nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

There are neural pathways between the vestibular system and an area of the brain in the fourth ventricle that appear to coordinate vomiting. Based on this and clinical observations, we theorized a relationship between a susceptibility to motion sickness and the intensity of nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. A significant relationship (P less than 0.01) between a susceptibility to motion sickness and anticipatory nausea/vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was found. Antimotion drugs such as scopolamine may have a greater antiemetic effect on chemotherapy patients susceptibl

Effects of vestibular stimulation in seizure-prone children. An EEG study.

Concern that vestibular stimulation may induce seizures in seizure-prone children has been based on hearsay and unconfirmed clinical impressions of practicing therapists. To clarify this issue, we took electroencephalographic recordings of seizure-prone children before, during, and after specific vestibular stimulation. Ten children with seizure histories, 5, to 15 years of age, were exposed to warm and cold caloric vestibular stimuli. Electroencephalographic activity was recorded before, during, and after each vestibular stimulus; recordings were rated and compared prevestibular and postvesti

A syndrome with mixed deafness, Mozart ear, middle and inner ear dysplasias.

A 10-year-old boy presenting a disorder of multiple malformations with an otologic component consisting of mixed deafness, Mozart ear, thin stapes, small oval window and agenesis of the semicircular canals, was studied. A comparative analysis of similar malformation-entities has permitted the delineation of a previously undescribed syndrome.

[A electromyographic study of the vestibular reflexes. A clinical experimental study on human beings (author's transl)].

It is reported about myography on testpersons with normal vestibular function as well as on patients after operativ dissection of the VIII. nerve, neuropathia nerv. vest. and M. Menière. On the base of these findings it is supposed that myography proofes to be a useful help in the judgement of the specific influence of the vestibular organs on the motoric system. The myographic changes of the muscular activity after caloric stimulation give exact information about the entire vestibular system and especially about the vestibular-spinal-pathways. The best way of testing the vestibular activity i
