Inhibition and working memory in young preschool children with symptoms of ADHD and/or oppositional-defiant disorder.

BACKGROUND: Early symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) are associated with deficits in cognitive self-regulatory processes or executive functions (EF)s. However, the hypothesis that neurocognitive deficits underlying the two disorders are already evident during early preschool years still has limited empirical support. The present study investigated associations between symptoms of ADHD and/or ODD and two core EFs, inhibition and working memory, in a large nonclinical sample of 3-year old children. METHOD: Participants were 1045 c

Psychiatric and psychological morbidity as a function of adaptive disability in preschool children with aggressive and hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior.

Children with high levels of aggressive-hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior (AHII; n = 154) were subdivided into those with (n = 38) and without (n = 116) adaptive disability (+AD/-AD) defined as a discrepancy between expected versus actual adaptive functioning. They were compared to each other and a control group of 47 normal children. Both AHII groups were more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder than control children; more symptoms of general psychopathology; greater social skills deficits; more parental

Latina mothers' stances on stimulant medication: complexity, conflict, and compromise.

This study was undertaken to understand and describe Latina mothers' cognitions and attitudes toward the use of medication for their young children's behavior problems under the premise that these factors are determinants of noncompliance and inadequate adherence to medication treatments. Quantitative and qualitative data were extracted from a multimethod study of professional help seeking. Participants were 62 mothers from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Findings indicated that mothers overwhelmingly preferred treatment options other than medication primarily because they under

Childhood antecedent disorders to bipolar disorder in adults: a controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine antecedent childhood psychiatric disorders in adult patients with bipolar disorder. METHOD: Using structured diagnostic interviews, childhood psychiatric diagnoses of 83 referred patients with diagnosed DSM-IV bipolar disorder were compared to those of 308 adults without mood disorders. RESULTS: Patients with bipolar disorder had significantly higher rates of childhood disruptive behavior disorders (ADHD, oppositional-defiant disorder, and conduct disorder), childhood anxiety disorders (separation anxiety and overanxious disorder), and enuresis,

Young children's representations of conflict and distress: a longitudinal study of boys and girls with disruptive behavior problems.

We investigated narratives, symbolic play, and emotions in children who varied in severity of disruptive behavior problems. Children's representations of hypothetical situations of conflict and distress were assessed at 4-5 and 7 years. Behavior problems also were assessed then and again at 9 years. Children's aggressive and caring themes differentiated nonproblem children, children whose problems remained or worsened with age, and those whose problems improved over time. Differences in boys and girls whose problems continued sometimes reflected exaggerations of prototypic gender differences s

Examining alternative explanations of the covariation of ADHD and anxiety symptoms in children: a community study.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is comorbid with a range of other disorders, including anxiety disorders. The aim was to examine different explanations for the covariation of these symptom domains in children according to the framework provided by (Lilienfeld, S. O. Comorbidity between and within childhood externalizing and internalizing disorders: Reflections and directions. Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2003). The covariation of ADHD symptoms and anxiety symptoms were examined over a 12-month period in a community sample of 499 children aged 8-13; 91% were retained at

Behavioral status of children with cryptogenic localization-related epilepsy.

Using the Child Behavior Checklist, behavior of 51 children with cryptogenic localization-related epilepsy was studied. According to parent report, children with cryptogenic localization-related epilepsy scored in the clinical range on the subscales "internalizing behavior," ''total behavior,'' and "attentional problems.'' No relation between the epilepsy factors seizure frequency, age at onset, duration of epilepsy or the number of antiepileptic drugs, and the subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist was found. Only for seizure type a relationship was found. Although in the normal range, the

Structure of DSM-III-R criteria for disruptive childhood behaviors: confirmatory factor models.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this analysis were to examine the extent to which DSM-III-R criteria for disruptive behavior patterns were consistent with the system of diagnoses proposed. Particular attention was paid to (1) whether oppositional defiant disorder is factorially distinct from conduct disorder (CD) and (2) the extent to which CD can be further classified into overt and covert CD behaviors. METHOD: Data were gathered on DSM-III-R criteria for disruptive behavior patterns for a sample of 739 New Zealand 15-year-olds using data provided by parental and self-report. These data were suppleme

Course and short-term outcomes of separation anxiety disorder in a community sample of twins.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the course and short-term outcomes associated with separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in a community setting. METHOD: The subjects were 161 of 2,061 8- to 17-year-old twins with SAD from a community-based twin study. Subjects were born between 1974 and 1983. Subjects and parents were personally interviewed about the subject's current psychiatric history between 1990 and 1993. A follow-up interview was conducted, on average, 18 months later. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors and outcomes of persistent SAD. RESULTS: Of the 161 subjects with SAD at time 1,

Refinements in the hierarchical structure of externalizing psychiatric disorders: Patterns of lifetime liability from mid-adolescence through early adulthood.

Research on hierarchical modeling of psychopathology has frequently identified 2 higher order latent factors, internalizing and externalizing. When based on the comorbidity of psychiatric diagnoses, the externalizing domain has usually been modeled as a single latent factor. Multivariate studies of externalizing symptom features, however, suggest multidimensionality. To address this apparent contradiction, confirmatory factor analytic methods and information-theoretic criteria were used to evaluate 4 theoretically plausible measurement models based on lifetime comorbidity patterns of 7 putativ

Changes in the severity of autism symptom domains are related to mental health challenges during middle childhood.

For many autistic children, the severity of their autism symptoms changes during middle childhood. We studied whether these changes are associated with the emergence of other mental health challenges such as anxiety and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children who had increased social-communication challenges had more anxiety and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and disruptive behavior problems than other children. Children who decreased their restricted and repetitive behaviors, on the contrary, had more anxiety. We discuss why these changes in autism symptoms may l

Tactile sensory dysfunction in children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVES: While a group of children with ADHD may have normal behavioral responses to sensory stimuli, another group may be hyperreactive. The aim of this survey was studying association of tactile sensory responsivity with co-morbidity of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, subtypes of ADHD, and gender in children with ADHD. METHODS: The subjects were 81 children with ADHD from a child psychiatry clinic. The diagnoses were made according to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Tactile dysfunction Checklist was used to assess the three types of tactile sensory dysfunction including Hyperse

Aggression, hostility, and irritability in children at risk for bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: To assess aggression, irritability and hostility in children at risk for bipolar disorder (BP). METHODS: Using the parent and the child versions of the Children's Hostility Inventory (CHI), we assessed aggression, hostility, and irritability in 300 offspring aged 6-18 years old of BP parents and 169 children of community controls. RESULTS: Children of BP parents have significantly higher scores on the total CHI and its subscales than do children of control parents. After adjusting for demographic variables, both parents' non-BP psychopathology, child psychopathology, and within-f

Atypical antipsychotics for disruptive behaviour disorders in children and youths.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of the original Cochrane Review, last published in 2012 (Loy 2012). Children and youths with disruptive behaviour disorders may present to health services, where they may be treated with atypical antipsychotics. There is increasing usage of atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of disruptive behaviour disorders. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect and safety of atypical antipsychotics, compared to placebo, for treating disruptive behaviour disorders in children and youths. The aim was to evaluate each drug separately rather than the class effect, on the grounds

The longitudinal course of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder in girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: findings from a controlled 5-year prospective longitudinal follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: A better understanding of the long-term scope and impact of the comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has important clinical and public health implications. However, most of the available information on the subject derives from predominantly male samples. This study evaluated the longitudinal course and impact of comorbid ODD in a large sample of girls with ADHD. METHODS: Subjects were pediatrically and psychiatrically referred girls with and without ADHD assessed blindly at baseline (mean age = 11.6 years

Pituitary-adrenal reactivity in a child psychiatric population: salivary cortisol response to stressors.

The aim of this explorative study was to investigate whether physical and psychological challenges are effective in inducing a cortisol response in psychiatric and control children, and if so whether the cortisol response can discriminate between diagnostic groups and is related to psychiatric symptoms. Fifty-two patients, including children with dysthymia, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified (PDDNOS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, were compared to 15 healthy control children. Symptomatology was scored using t
