Genetic disorders in portraits.

Many artists have depicted genetic disorders in portrait paintings. In some instances such disorders can be identified in self-portraits, most notably the tetralogy of Fallot in the Dutch painter Dick Ket, or in portraits of the famous, such as the Habsburg jaw in the Emperor Charles V. But it is in other portraits that most examples can be found, such as the different types of dwarfism depicted by Velázquez. A table listing over 70 examples is provided.

Parental consanguinity and the Majewski syndrome.

We report a female infant with the Majewski syndrome, one of a group of conditions characterised by short ribs, polydactyly, dwarfism, and early neonatal death. This syndrome seems to be extremely rare, with only five well documented cases reported and, including this case, nine recorded in all. The Majewski syndrome is considered to be recessively inherited, and this report adds further support to this hypothesis, as the infant was born to consanguineous parents.

[Astragalectomy in children. Results, technics, and indications based on personal experience in 33 cases].

The authors have operated on 33 equinovarus feet, (14 patients) with various condition--myelomeningocele, arthrogryposis, club foot or dwarfism. The results were poor, only 11 being satisfactory. Some failures were due to incorrect tecunique. The authors describe the technique which they consider to be the best. This procedure appears to have its main indication in myelomeningocele and arthrogryposis when the feet are severely deformed and rigid.

A new dwarfing syndrome with extreme shortening of humeri and severe coxa vara.

A previously undescribed form of short-limbed dwarfism is reported in an 86-year-old man. All the long bones were shorter than normal, with extreme shortening of the humeri. Other features included dysplastic humeral heads, coxa vara with dysplasia of the femoral heads and acetabula, platybasia, and small vertebral bodies. In all other respects, including intelligence, the patient was normal for his age.

Thanatophoric dysplasia: A review.

Thanatophoric dysplasia is a well-known cause of potentially lethal short-limbed dwarfism in the newborn. The diagnosis is usually made by the recognition of characteristic radiological changes and confirmed at autopsy by demonstration of specific morphological and histological changes in the brain. This review is based upon the author's personal experience and archived data of 19 cases and concerns the clinical and radiographic manifestations, autopsy findings, molecular pathogenesis and the approach to antenatal diagnosis.

A case report of a patient with cleft palate carrying the risk of tetraplegia.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) is an inherited disorder of bone growth that results in short-trunk dwarfism, skeletal abnormalities, disorders in vision and hearing, atlanto-axial instability, and cleft palate. This important anomaly of the cervical vertebrae carries the risk of tetraplegia during cleft palate operations. In this case report, we discuss a case of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, the perioperative and postoperative measures, and the risk of tetraplegia.

First trimester prenatal diagnosis of chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome) with ultrasound.

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome) is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by short-limb dwarfism, postaxial polydactyly, ectodermal defects, and congenital heart disease. This condition is most prevalent in the Amish population of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, occurring in 1/5000 births and in 1/60,000 births in the general population. This report presents a case of ultrasonographic detection of chondroectodermal dysplasia at 12 weeks of gestation.

Mesomelic dysplasia with absence of fibulae and hexadactyly: Nievergelt syndrome or new syndrome?

Mesomelic dysplasia is a form of short-limb dwarfism characterized by disproportionate shortness of the middle segment of all limbs. Included in this category of skeletal disorders is the Nievergelt syndrome, which typically manifests a rhomboidal shape of the tibiae and fibulae, an unusual foot deformity, radioulnar synostosis, and dysplasia of the elbow and knee joints. We describe a patient with mesomelic dysplasia with findings suggestive of the Nievergelt syndrome and with absence of fibulae and hexadactyly.

Disendocrine manifestations during non tumoral aqueductal stenosis.

Disendocrine manifestations during aqueductal stenosis are more and more frequently reported in literature. In the present study, 20 cases of benign aqueductal stenosis associated with disendocrine features as amenorrhea, obesity, polydipsia and polyuria, dwarfism, acromegalic features, hypogonadism, precocious puberty, gigantism are stressed. Authors discuss clinical findings and pathogenetic hypothesis on the base of endocrine, neurological and peculiar radiological features with the support of a wide literature review.

Cockayne syndrome: a case with hyperinsulinemia and growth hormone deficiency.

Cockayne syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of childhood characterized by cachectic dwarfism with senile-like appearance, mental retardation, photosensitive dermatitis, loss of adipose tissue, pigmentary degeneration of retina, microcephaly, deafness, skeletal and neurologic abnormalities. We describe here an 18 year old boy with Cockayne syndrome who had, in addition to the typical features of the disorder, fasting hyperinsulinemia and growth hormone deficiency.

Atelosteogenesis type III: a distinct skeletal dysplasia with features overlapping atelosteogenesis and oto-palato-digital syndrome type II.

We present 5 cases of a short-limb dwarfism syndrome whose manifestations overlap those of atelosteogenesis and oto-palato-digital syndrome Type II. Clinical, radiographic, genetic, and histologic data are presented which demonstrate differences between our patients and previously reported cases of these other conditions. We conclude that the disorder seen in these children represents a distinct chondrodysplasia for which we propose the name atelosteogenesis Type III.

[Orthodontic studies in children with stunted growth].

Biometrical studies on a group of 43 children with stunted growth showed that stunted growth is associated with smaller dimensions of the upper dental arch. The lower dental arch is not involved. The relationship between the variations in the characteristics under examination are explained with the aid of three basic factors of growth which had been established mathematically. The crown diameters of the permanent teeth are not smaller as in children with normal growth.

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome: clinical and psychological findings in children. Nosologic overlap with oculodentodigital dysplasia?

We describe 3 young children with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, 2 with typical manifestations and 1 with the facial changes without the eye abnormalities but with a cleft palate and with complete syndactyly of fingers IV and V. The latter case represents overlap of the Hallermann-Streiff syndrome and oculodentodigital dysplasia. "Dwarfism" as a possible clinical risk marker of mental retardation is discussed. As cause, a mendelian autosomal dominant mutation seems most probable.

[The pycnodysostosis (author's transl)].

Two own observations of pycnodysostosis initiated our description of this disease. Inherited as an autosomal recessive trait the syndrome is characterized by a medium degree generalized osteosclerosis, open craniial sutures and fontanels until adult lige, hypoplastic mandibles with deficiency of the angle, prominence of the forehead and occiput, hypoplasia of the paranasal sinuses, commonly observed dysproportionate dwarfism, acro-osteolysis and increased bone fragility. Contrary to osteopetrosis the prognosis is good.

[Malformations and genetics in art and culture].

The cultural topic of malformations is universal by its questionning. Malformations and inherited diseases have been observed and represented since Antiquity. These sculptures and pictures inform about mentalities and behaviours in front of severe birth defects. Dysmorphic syndromes can be identifiable, like achondroplasia, whereas others dwarfisms are arguable. Hermaphroditism has a cosmic meaning. Failing that rational explanation, major abnormalities were considered as monsters of supernatural origin.

[Pseudoachondrodysplasia (pseudoachondroplastic spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia). Description of 2 non-familial cases].

Two non familial cases of pseudoachondroplasia are reported. The patients, observed at 4 years and 6 months and 5 years respectively, show short-limb dwarfism with disproportionated long trunk and with normal head and face. Flattening of vertebral bodies with biconvex deformity and short tubular bones with irregular epiphyses and metaphyses are the major radiographic features. In these patients to state the type of genetic transmission is very arduous, as the genetic heterogeneity of the pseudoachondroplasia.

Identification of Potential Candidate Dwarf Genes in Maize by BSA-Seq and Transcriptomic Analyses.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a globally important crop. Understanding plant height and the underlying dwarfing genes is of critical importance for … nes on chromosome 4. Through gene annotation, four potential candidate genes likely associated with dwarfism were identified, and the functions of these candidate genes need to be validated in future experiments. The identification of these potential candidate genes lays a theoretical foundation for the subsequent functional analysis, gene cloning, and mec …

The haunting of the Soul's hill: uncoupled responses of plant functional traits and soil microbes to serpentine soils lead to Bonsai effect in the Neotropics.

We investigated the plant-soil linkages of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf., a widely distributed species in the Neotropics, and how the serpentine syndrome leads to dwarfism by comparing soil microbes, soil properties and tree functional traits in serpentine and non-serpentine soils. For this study, we evaluated the presence of heavy metals in the soils and how they affect plant functional traits; differences in the C:N ratio between serpentine and non-serpentine sites as well as soil microbiome by using phospholipid fatty acid technique approach to assess microbial functional groups. We further …
