The Role of Helmet Fastening in Motorcycle Road Traffic Accidents.

Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among the Indian population. Motorcycle accidents are the most prominent type of injuries among road traffic accidents in India. In this prospective cross-sectional study, all the patients attending three centers in north Bangalore, with facial injuries occurring from a motorcycle accident, were included. The subjects were analyzed for the type of collision, helmet use, type of helmet use, and fastening status of the helmets. A total of 311 motorcyclists were included in this study for a period of 18 months (December 2015 to June 2017). The…

Facial palsy reconstruction.

The facial nerve stimulates the muscles of facial expression and the parasympathetic nerves of the face. Consequently, facial nerve paralysis can lead to facial asymmetry, deformation, and functional impairment. Facial nerve palsy is most commonly idiopathic, as with Bell palsy, but it can also result from a tumor or trauma. In this article, we discuss traumatic facial nerve injury. To identify the cause of the injury, it is important to first determine its location. The location and extent of the damage inform the treatment method, with options including primary repair, nerve graft, cross-fac

The facial-bone fractures among fatally injured car occupants in frontal collisions.

The retrospective study was performed of all deceased car-occupants in frontal car collisions in order to identify persons with facial-bone fractures. The sample consisted of 482 cases: 378 males and 104 females, average age of 39.59+/-16.01 years. There were 239 car-drivers, 194 front-seat passengers, and 49 rear-seat passengers. In 46 of 482 cases, single fracture of upper facial bones was established: nasal fractures were the most common, followed by zygomatic. In 118 of 482 cases, fracture of upper facial bones was established, as well as 70 cases of jawbone. The fractured facial bones eit

Unique presentation of impaction of glass fragments in the buccal, submasseteric and parotid spaces subsequent to road traffic accident.

Penetrating glass injuries in the facial region represent a very rare and complex variety of trauma. Cases of glass foreign bodies in the orbital tissue or the eyeball have been reported. Scattered glass foreign bodies in both the superficial and deep layers of the neck have been reported. However, no cases, to our knowledge, have been reported for foreign body impaction over the cheek region.Occasionally, the foreign glass particles can be retained in the anatomic spaces. These are mostly the result of road traffic accidents or by interpersonal violence. These penetrating injuries can result

Injuries associated with mandible fractures sustained in motor vehicle collisions.

Motor vehicle collisions are second only to altercations as the most common cause of mandible fractures. This article details in a retrospectively studied group the incidence of isolated mandible fractures and associated injuries in patients who were involved in motor vehicle collisions. This group consisted of 148 patients with mandible fractures listed in the University of Mississippi's trauma registry during the past 5 years. In almost all patients, associated injuries occurred with mandible fractures that were caused by motor vehicle collisions, with an incidence of 99.3 percent. Facial an

Maxillofacial trauma in fatally injured victims of motor vehicle accidents.

A survey of 84 victims of maxillofacial injuries sustained in road traffic accidents is presented. The material was based on the files of the Finnish National Board of Traffic Accident Investigation of the Insurance Companies, comprised the years 1972-1983 and covered the whole country. 86% of the victims were occupants of motor cars; only 24% had worn seat belts. Similarly only two of the eight motor-cyclists had worn a helmet. The majority of all victims also had other head injuries but only 24% had brain injuries; over 50% had a chest injury. In 20 cases the facial injury was thought to be …

Ocular trauma in otolaryngology.

Otolaryngologists are commonly called upon to emergently evaluate blunt trauma to the facial skeleton. These injuries are occasionally associated with serious trauma to the orbital contents. This manuscript reviews these orbital injuries by considering the pertinent eye anatomy and the extensive examination usually performed by an ophthalmologist. Anterior and posterior segment injuries along with specific trauma to the optic nerve will also be discussed.

Predictors of Facial Fractures in Trauma Patients: Retrospective Review at a Level I Trauma Center.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and causes of facial fractures differ between patients, but patterns arise within populations. These patterns vary by gender, age, and between countries. This study aims to determine variables to identify patients at risk for facial fractures in a United States trauma population. METHODS: This is a single-center study of Trauma Registry data, inclusive of years July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022. Inclusion criteria were based upon all trauma patients. Confirmation of a non-isolated facial fracture (dependent variable) was verified using ICD10 diagnosis codes. A logist

Psychosocial Risk Factors Associated With Facial Self-Inflicted and Assault-Related Gunshot Wounds at A Southeastern Level 1 Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of death in the United States. Few studies have examined psychiatric and social risk factors associated with facial self-inflicted gunshot wounds (SIGSWs) and assault-related gunshot wounds (AGSWs) in regions with high levels of firearm-related violence. This study aimed to identify factors associated with injury intent and mortality in a regional Level 1 trauma center serving the Southeastern United States. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review of individuals presenting to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Emergency Dep

Transient cranial neuropathies as sequelae of Onyx embolization of arteriovenous shunt lesions near the skull base: possible axonotmetic traction injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Transarterial embolization with Onyx is a relatively safe and increasingly common method of treating cranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) and arteriovenous malformations (AVM). Cranial neuropathy resulting from this procedure has been reported. CASE REPORTS: Three case histories are presented in two patients treated for a DAVF and an AVM near the skull base with heavily parasitized supply from external carotid artery branches. Transarterial embolization resulted in transient cranial neuropathies including two cases of lower facial nerve palsy and one case of trigeminal ne

Long-term functional recovery after facial nerve transection and repair in the rat.

BACKGROUND: The rodent model is commonly used to study facial nerve injury. Because of the exceptional regenerative capacity of the rodent facial nerve, it is essential to consider the timing when studying facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Short-term functional recovery data following transection and repair of the facial nerve has been documented by our laboratory. However, because of the limitations of the head fixation device, there is a lack of long-term data following facial nerve injury. The objective of this study was to elucidate the long-term time course and functional

Post-traumatic facial artery aneurysm in a child.

Significant facial soft tissue injury can result from trauma to the head and neck. The long-term sequelae of such injuries include vascular anomalies, which may present weeks or months following the initial injury. We report here a case of a post-traumatic facial artery aneurysm which developed in a pediatric patient three weeks following a penetrating facial injury during motor vehicle accident (MVA). Although post-traumatic aneurysm of the facial artery is rare, follow-up on head and neck trauma patients with respect to this type of complication is warranted.
