New autosomal dominant syndrome reminiscent of Coffin-Siris syndrome and Brachymorphism-Onychodysplasia-Dysphalangism syndrome.

We report a man and his two daughters (one stillborn) with an apparently unique constellation of anomalies including fifth finger/toe terminal phalanx and nail hypoplasia. The craniofacial manifestations include large boxy head, round face, hypertelorism with downslanting palpebral fissures and wide mouth. Other manifestations include brachydactyly, fifth finger clinodactyly and ventricular septal defect. Intelligence is normal. The resemblance to Coffin-Siris, Brachymorphism-Onychodysplasia-Dysphalangism and DOOR syndromes is discussed and we concluded that this family probably represents a n

The surgical management of the upper extremity anomalies associated with Du Pan syndrome.

Du Pan syndrome is a rare condition comprising complex brachydactyly with fibular hypoplasia that is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This article describes experience gained through the management of four patients with this disorder. The surgical management of the upper limb abnormalities is discussed and a detailed timetable for their treatment is suggested.

Newly recognized autosomal recessive faciothoracoskeletal syndrome.

We report on 2 brothers, born to consanguineous parents presenting thin/long face, small ears, blepharophimosis, malar hypoplasia, long neck, pectus excavatum, brachycamptodactyly, and sacral dimple. We suspect that these patients represent a previously undescribed autosomal recessive syndrome.

Amniotic band sequence and limb defects: data from a population-based study.

Cases with amniotic bands were analysed separately as part of an ongoing study of limb defects occurring among 1,213,913 liveborn infants in British Columbia during the years 1952 to 1984. A total of 24 cases with this specific condition was identified among 659 cases with limb defects. The calculated incidence for amniotic band sequence with significant limb involvement was 0.19 in 10,000 livebirths. This is a minimal incidence, as cases without defects of the limbs, but with constriction rings were not identified with this approach. Familial cases and cases with additional anomalies were fou

Orthopedic aspects of the Marfan phenotype.

Thirty-six patients with the phenotypic features of Marfan's syndrome (arachnodactyly, abnormal ratio of arm span to height, ligamentous laxity, and tall stature) were evaluated and classified into three groups. Group 1 represented definite Marfan's syndrome and included patients with two or more major signs, with additional minor signs as described by McKusick (18 patients). Group 2 represented probable Marfan's syndrome and included patients with one major sign and multiple minor signs (nine patients). Group 3 represented the Marfan phenotype and included patients with multiple minor signs (

Sorsby syndrome: a report on further generations of the original family.

Sorsby syndrome is a dominantly inherited combination of bilateral macular colobomas and apical dystrophy of the hands and feet (brachydactyly type B). We report on a further three affected members of the family originally described by Sorsby. Two of these have a single kidney, two have hearing loss, and one has a uterine anomaly.

Terminal limb congenital malformations: analysis of 523 cases.

A total of 523 Japanese patients with terminal limb congenital malformations were reviewed for the characteristic features, and especially for type correlation between hand and foot anomalies. There were 281 cases of hand involvement alone, 149 cases of foot involvement alone, and 93 cases of combined hand and foot involvement. Polydactyly was commonly preaxial in the hand and postaxial in the foot, in contrast to the well-known postaxial dominance in the hand among whites. Hand anomalies were likely to show the same Swanson type of anomaly as the foot, with the affected digital ray likely to

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia.

Skeletal dysplasia with autosomal dominant inheritance was found in four members of one family and in one sporadic case. The syndrome comprises brachydactyly E, platyspondyly, abnormality of the sacroiliac joint, disturbance of metaphyseal modelling, epiphyseal dysplasia, and short stature. This study deals with a particular type of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and compares it with similar cases in two previously published papers.

The pathogenesis of premature craniosynostosis in acrocephalosyndactyly (Apert's syndrome). A reconsideration.

A detailed examination of a stillborn fetus with Apert's syndrome showed several unexpected findings, which prompted a reevaluation of the heretofore generally accepted hypotheses regarding the cause of the dysmorphic craniofacial features in this syndrome. (1) The characteristic clinical features of Apert's syndrome were present at 24 to 26 weeks of gestation, and presumably much earlier. (2) However, there was no evidence, clinical or histological, of premature fusion of any of the cranial sutures or basilar synchondroses in this fetus. From our observations, and from a critical review of th

Mononeuropathy multiplex associated with systemic vasculitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Vasculitis, a systemic disorder with inflammation of blood vessel walls, can develop broad spectrum of signs and symptoms according to involvement of various organs, and therefore, early diagnosis of vasculitis is challenging. We herein describe a patient who developed a special case of systemic vasculitis with mononeuropathy multiplex, rectal perforation and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) presented with pulmonary embolism. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old woman visited hospital with complaints of myalgia and occasional fever. She was initially diagnosed as proctitis and treated with

Assessment of striatal & postural deformities in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Though striatal and postural deformities are known to occur commonly in atypical Parkinsonism patients, these may also be seen in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). These are frequently misdiagnosed as joint or orthopaedic pathology leading to unnecessary investigations. This study was conducted to observe the various striatal and postural deformities among patients with PD in India. METHODS: This study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching institute in north# India. Seventy consecutive patients with PD diagnosed as per the modified UK Brain Bank criteria wer

Radiography of the hand often reflects the picture of generalized diseases, affecting both the muscolo-skeletal system and the others. Some … imes, the hand is characteristically affected in sickle-cell disease--particularly in the so called hand-foot syndrome--as "cone-deformity". In multiple myeloma incidence of hand involvement is 2.9%: lesions reflect general abnormalities observed in other skeletal sites, and they consist in multiple well-circumscribed lytic lesions. In amyloidosis, poorly defined ra …

[Cold atmospheric pressure plasma for the treatment of acute and chronic wounds].

BACKGROUND: Besides acute wounds (through trauma or surgical interventions), chronic wounds comprise a relatively large and heterogeneous group of diseases. These include leg ulcers with venous disease greatly prevailing arterial disease, diabetic foot syndrome, and pressure ulcers. Due to a considerable treatment resistance against such therapies, new and effective, additive treatment options especially for chronic wounds are needed. Wound treatment with cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) constitutes such an innovative option. OBJECTIVES: Current research regarding the efficacy of cold plasma for

Hypereosinophilic Syndrome Following the BNT162b2 (BioNTech/Pfizer) Vaccine Successfully Treated with Mepolizumab: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Although an increasing number of real-life data confirm large-scale clinical trial findings on the efficacy and safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, rare but severe adverse reactions have begun to emerge. Here, we report a full-blown hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) following a BNT162b2 (BioNTech/Pfizer) vaccine. A 48-year-old man developed, 5 days after the first shot of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, erythematous and painful nodular lesions in the lower and upper limbs accompanied by widespread itching, acrocyanosis with gangrenous lesions at the tips of the first and fourth fingers of the right hand, as

Influence of second-trimester ultrasound markers for Down syndrome in pregnant women of advanced maternal age.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of second-trimester ultrasound markers on the incidence of Down syndrome among pregnant women of advanced maternal age. This was a retrospective cohort study on 889 singleton pregnancies between the 14th and 30th weeks, with maternal age ≥ 35 years, which would undergo genetic amniocentesis. The second-trimester ultrasound assessed the following markers: increased nuchal fold thickness, cardiac hyperechogenic focus, mild ventriculomegaly, choroid plexus cysts, uni- or bilateral renal pyelectasis, intestinal hyperechogenicity, sin

Bardet-Biedl syndrome in two sibling pairs: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare multisystem ciliopathy defined by retinal dystrophy, obesity, polydactyly, hypogonadism, and renal anomalies, often accompanied by neurodevelopmental and behavioral issues. Diagnosis relies heavily on clinical features, particularly in resource-limited settings where genetic testing is unavailable. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two sibling pairs, all of South Asian, Pakistani ethnicity, clinically diagnosed with Bardet-Biedl syndrome using contemporary diagnostic frameworks. The first pair, two male brothers aged 17 and 21 years, came from a consan

Sorafenib-related generalized eruptive keratoacanthomas (Grzybowski syndrome): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sorafenib is an oral multikinase inhibitor that targets Raf serine/threonine receptor tyrosine kinases and inhibits tumor cell growth and angiogenesis. Cutaneous toxicities of sorafenib are common, including cutaneous eruptions (such as truncal erythema and seborrheic-dermatitis-like changes) and hand-foot syndrome. Keratoacanthomas and squamous cell carcinomas have been reported previously; however, we report a case of multiple eruptive keratoacanthomas in the form of Grzybowski syndrome after initiation of sorafenib. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 63-year-old Caucasian male who …
