Ten women with essential hirsutism were treated for one year with cyclic administration of cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. Biochemical and clinical control took place after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months of treatment. In 4 patients great improvement of hirsutism was noted, but only after 6 months of therapy. In 4 patients there was some improvement, while 2 were resistant. Side effects included reduced libido in 4 cases, mental depression in 3, dry skin and itching in 4 and transient nausea in one, but never necessitated cessation or interruption of treatment. Five females with idiopathic hirsutism, ten with adrenogenital syndrome, four with acne vulgaris, and three with Stein-Leventhal syndrome were treated for nine months with large or small doses of cyproterone acetate (100 or 2 mg daily, respectively) in combination with oestrogen. The drug had a good effect on the acne vulgaris and moderated the hirsutism. In the various patient groups the serum testosterone level was decreased to between 58.6% (+/- 28.7% S.E.) and 10.8% (+/- 8.2% S.E.) of the basal value. No essential difference in effectiveness was observed between the large and small doses.

Two cases of malignant interstitial cell carcinoma of the testis are reported. The first patient had no evidence of a virilizing syndrome. Basal plasma testosterone (T) was decreased, whereas plasma luteinizing hormone, estrone (E1), and androstenedione were elevated. Four patients with primary amenorrhoea associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome were investigated clinically, radiologically, endocrinologically and histologically. The functional state of the cortical and medullar layers of the adrenal glands was studied in 127 patients with primary arterial hypotension (109 females and 18 males, aged 17 to 48 years). Two brothers showed ichthyosis, bilateral cryptorchidism, hypogenitalism and mental retardation. In addition, the younger brother had short stature associated with disorders of secretions of insulin, ACTH and GH. This is the third reported case of the syndrome of ichthyosis and hypogonadism.
