Three cases of lethal short-rib polydactyly syndrome of the Majewski type are presented. All three cases were the products of first-cousin marriages. Two of the cases were siblings; three more of their siblings also showed signs of this abnormality but their cases were incompletely documented. The three reported cases are compared with five fully documented cases that have been presented by other authors.

A graph theoretic definition of pedigrees is given and a distinction drawn between simple and complex pedigrees. Algorithms are presented to calculate the likeihood of any kind of pedigree, assuming only segregation at a finite set of loci, nonassortative mating and no environmental correlations; multiple births and consanguineous marriages are explicity allowed for. The formulation given can lead to more powerful genetic counselling, segregation analysis and linkage analysis.

Twenty-two Hungarian families with Rett syndrome girls were genealogically examined. None of our 23 probands was born to first-cousin couples, but we established increased number of consanguineous marriages among the ancestors of the patients. Observing the places where the Rett families originate from, we found a predominance in the north-east part of Hungary. Our results support the findings of the Swedish analysis.

The higher risk of the occurrence of psoriasis vulgaris in the progeny of conjugal psoriasis marriages was repeatedly reported. In this paper a family, where the parents and both the children are suffering from psoriasis is described. The disease occurs also in some of the blood relatives of the father and mother. The occurrence of the disease and the segregation of the HLA antigens was followed in the kinship. It seems that a genetic factor linked to the HLA system influences the developement of psoriasis vulgaris.

Congenital chloride diarrhea (CCD), first described in 1945, is a rare, autosomal-recessively inherited disease. It is characterized by chronic, watery diarrhea with a high fecal chloride concentration, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, and hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. In this report, a 7.5-year-old boy with CCD diagnosed by high fecal chloride concentration is presented. Until now CCD had not been reported from Turkey, although consanguineous marriages are common.

This article reports on how some endemic rural communities in northern Ghana perceive and manage lymphatic filariasis. The disease was mainly attributed to supernatural and spiritual factors. Except for a few instances of neglect, the community was generally caring towards people with the disease. Issues related to marriage, stigma, concealment and leadership are discussed. On the whole, the importance of social and cultural perceptions of a disease and its relevance to control cannot be over emphasized.

The marriage-to-conception interval in 151 pregnancies producing infants with anencephaly or spina bifida was not significantly different from that in 218 pregnancies resulting in normal infants. Significantly more miscarriages occurred before than after the birth of 285 infants with anencephaly or spina bifida, but in 133 controls no before-after difference was observed. These observations seem to favour the idea that miscarriages are a manifestation rather than a cause of anencephaly and spina bifida.

The analysis of a man suffering from premature ejaculation is described. As is typical of a large group of men who ejaculate prematurely, he was passive and masochistic in his marriage and obsessive-compulsive in his character. Analysis of his affect of awe led first to a deeper understnding of his self-representations and object relationships, and later, with the discovery of the specific unconscious fantasies associated with the feeling of awe, to the alleviation of his symptom of premature ejaculation.
