PURPOSE: We report a patient with basal cell carcinoma presenting with severe myiasis in a large ulcer involving the upper and lower eyelid.
METHODS: Myiasis is an infestation of vertebrate animals by larvae of certain fly species. About 70 larvae were removed manually. A biopsy of the tissue underneath demonstrated a basal cell carcinoma. The myiasis was produced by the fly Lucilia sericata, currently used for treating chronic nonhealing ulcers. Because of the stage of the carcinoma, an orbital exenteration was carried out.
RESULTS: The patient died 2 days later because of cardiopulmonary f…

On July 2009, 5 fly larvae were discovered inside the nose of a 76-year-old female. She was living in Cheonan-si, and in a state of coma due to rupture of an aortic aneurysm. Surgery was performed on the day of admission, and the larvae were found 4 days later. By observing their posterior spiracle, the larvae were identified as Lucilia sericata. Considering the rapid development of this species, the infection was likely acquired during hospitalization. Further investigation on the hospital environment should be needed to know the origin of the infection.

Myiasis is the condition resulting from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The blowflies (Calliphoridae) of Argentina comprise several species that may cause myiasis by colonizing wounds or infected body orifices, and one specific parasite: Cochliomyia hominivorax. This species often causes traumatic myiasis in cattle, dogs and cats, and it is not rare in humans. The larvae consume living tissues, so they are dangerous unless speedily removed. Immediate operative exploration along with the removal of larvae and primary defect closure is recommended in ever…

Cutaneous bot fly infestation is common in travellers to Mexico and Central America. Myiasis affecting the genitalia is rare, however, with few previous reports. We document an unusual case in Nottingham, UK.

UNLABELLED: Parasitic infestation of the body by dipterous larvae belongs to the most undesirable events in cancer patients with malignant cutaneous wounds. Human myiasis is rare in developed countries of the northern hemisphere but occurs more often in tropical and subtropical regions. Advanced age, poor hygiene, bad housing conditions, vascular disease and diabetes seem to be predisposing factors for myiasis. We report a case of myiasis in an extensive skin metastasis resulting from a primary cancer located in the oropharynx. In the literature there are few reports on myiasis in malignant wo…

OBJECTIVE: Primary human cerebral myiasis is an exceedingly rare condition and is almost never encountered by physicians in developed countries. The case report summarizes a case of extensive cerebral myiasis in a periurban community in the United States.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: After a minor motor vehicle accident, police brought a 75-year-old man to the emergency room because he was observed to have a large cranial lesion. Examination revealed a 15 x 17 cm frontal bone defect with eroded frontal dura, exposed cortex, and massive cortical maggot infestation.
INTERVENTION: The patient was emp…

We report the 34th imported case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in Japan, which is not a habitat of the fly. A 41-year-old Japanese man noticed an insect-sting-like papule on his left upper back during his stay in Ecuador in March 2004. After his return home, the lesion gradually increased to become a red subcutaneous nodule with a central pore from which serosanguineous fluid drained. Because antimicrobial treatment under a diagnosis of inflammatory atheroma was ineffective, the lesion was incised and a 3rd instar larva of D. hominis was then found and removed. We checked t…

We describe the clinical presentation of the first case, to our knowledge, of myiasis in an orbit with an exposed hydroxyapatite implant. We examined a 10-year-old boy with an 8-year exposure of an orbital implant. He had an infestation with maggots. The implant and the worms were surgically removed, allowing the socket to heal by secondary intention. The patient was able to wear a prosthesis 2 weeks later. The parasites were identified as belonging to Cochliomyia hominivorax, a fly responsible for the majority of cases of myiasis in the Western hemisphere.

Noma is a devastating oro-facial necrotic condition affecting debilitated subjects. Oral myiasis is an infectious disease caused by deposition of larval flies in oral wounds and lesions. Oro-facial noma-myiasis association has not been previously reported in the literature. The aim of this paper is to report a case of noma associated with myiasis in a 65-year-old Brazilian male.

Myiasis with Cochliomyia homonivorax induce sensitive and nauseating cutaneous ulcerations. The usual treatment is limited to the mechanical extraction of the larvae. The authors have made a report on the treatment of C. hominivorax by local application of ivermectin. The use of this molecule paralyses and then kills the larvae. This allows rapid alleviation of pain and makes the extraction of the larvae easier.

We report here the case of myiasis of the mastoid cells in a 50-year old Saudi farmer. Eight larvae of suspected Calliphorid fly were extracted from his right mastoid at examination in the clinic. The larvae almost ate into his brain, using their powerful screw-shaped mouth parts. It is the first report of Calliphorid larvae affecting the mastoid cells from Saudi Arabia. The epidemiological and clinical implications of this finding are discussed below.

Infestations by dipterous larvae that feed on dead or living vertebrate tissues for a variable period are known as myiases; these infestations reduce host physiological functions, destroy host tissues and cause significant economic losses to livestock worldwide. Recent advances in understanding the specific and nonspecific immune responses of hosts to infestation by myiasis-causing larvae and the immunological strategies evolved by larvae against the host are reviewed here. The practical implications of immunological knowledge for diagnostic and vaccination strategies are also discussed, with …

We report three cases of ophthalmomyiasis in New Zealand, due to the larvae of Oestrus ovis. All three patients reported eye injury caused by a fly. The larvae were removed from the conjunctival sac without difficulty under local anaesthesia. Presenting ocular symptoms of foreign body sensation, irritation, redness and photophobia all resolved swiftly. Topical antibiotic and steroid eye drops were administered. All three patients also developed nasal symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge and epistaxis. Otolaryngology follow-up demonstrated nasal myiasis in two patients which was treated w…

A case of orotracheal myiasis in an 80-year-old man in coma for 1 week in the intensive care unit of Baskent University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey, is reported. A number of larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica were recovered repeatedly from the mouth and from the intubation tube of the patient and were reared to adults to facilitate identification. This case history points out the risky of myiasis caused by W. magnifica in the unconscious, debilitated patient.

This paper reports on a case of cutaneous myiasis due to Cordylobia anthropophaga in a dog imported from Cameroon to Germany. An account is given of the biology and ecology of this skin maggot fly as well as the clinics, diagnosis and treatment of the cutaneous myiasis are reviewed.

Dipterous fly maggots of different species live worldwide as parasites in hooved mammals. In the host the larval development causes typical boils, i.e., abscesses including the larvae. As a result of increasing tourist traffic, travelers can also bring back to Germany tropical types of myiasis.

Case histories are reported for four persons who had furuncular, traumatic, and nasal myiasis in Connecticut during 1980. Third-stage Sarcophaga sp. and Musca domestica larvae were removed from sores or wounds, a 2nd-stage Cuterebra sp. larva was dislodged from cutaneous tissue, and 3rd-stage larvae of Phaenicia sericata were extracted from nasal membranes. Human exposure to these facultative or obligate dipteran parasites occurred at residences in urban and suburban settings, including a convalescent home and a hospital. Infestations were asymptomatic in three cases, and following removal of …
