Parotid gland tumor is the most common salivary gland tumor and surgery is the main treatment method. The conventional surgery for the treatment of parotid tumor is mostly performed by using large incision which often causes complications and aesthetic problems to patients. With the advancement of medical technology, deeper understanding of histopathology and anatomy by the surgeons, as well as patients' higher demands on aesthetics and functions, the surgical methods and incisions have been constantly improved. This review focuses on the evolution of surgical approaches and incisions for the

OBJECTIVE: The impact of benign tumors of the parotid gland on whole salivary flow or sialochemistry is unclear.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 22 patients with benign parotid tumors and 18 healthy controls underwent measurements of unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva flow and sialochemistry (Na+, K+, Ca++, Amylase, and pH). Assessment of xerostomia was performed by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a questionnaire (QoL).
RESULTS: Stimulated whole salivary flow was significantly lower in patients with benign parotid tumors in comparison to the control group (2.76 ± 0.96 ml/mi

OBJECTIVE: A case of primary first bite syndrome (FBS), diagnosed in a patient with nonspecific adenocarcinoma of the deep lobe of the parotid gland.
DATA SOURCES: A Medline literature search was conducted on PubMed, using the keywords "first bite syndrome."
REVIEW METHODS: Using primary FBS and existence of a definite etiology as inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: We report on an unusual case of primary FBS, which had no surgical history. After multiple examinations, the pain was localized to a mass in the deep lobe of the parotid gland. After tumorectomy, the FBS pain was significantly relieved

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopically assisted extracapsular dissection through a single incision along the cephaloauricular furrow has been adapted as a method of access for operating on benign parotid gland tumors. However, no study has compared the immune and stress responses after surgery between the endoscopic procedure and conventional open surgery.
METHODS: Through a randomized method, 50 patients with benign parotid gland tumors were assigned to undergo either endoscopically assisted extracapsular dissection or open parotidectomy. The postoperative inflammatory changes and hormonal response in th

Different surgical options are currently available for treating benign tumors of the parotid gland, and the discussion on optimal treatment continues despite several meta-analyses. These options include more limited resections (extracapsular dissection, partial lateral parotidectomy) versus more extensive and traditional options (lateral parotid lobectomy, total parotidectomy). Different schools favor one option or another based on their experience, skills and tradition. This review provides a critical analysis of the literature regarding these options. The main limitation of all the studies i

BACKGROUND: The role fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions has evolved over the years. Although clinical and radiological parameters help to narrow the differential diagnosis the tissue diagnosis still remains the gold standard.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is from January 2013 to December 2015 in our Department of Pathology where 170 salivary gland lesions were aspirated. The aim of the present study was to analyze adequacy rate in relation to the size of lesion and to evaluate varied cytological spectrum of salivary gland lesions with emphasis on diffe

INTRODUCTION: Neoplastic lesions of salivary glands present an interesting subject because of their histologic diversification. Complex features exhibited by them have aroused considerable speculations concerning their histogenesis and continues to hold the interest of clinicians and pathologists. Major salivary glands are superficial and have easy accessibility for fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). These glands are generally not subjected to incisional or core needle biopsy, because of the possible risks of fistula formation and tumor seedling. FNAC diagnosis of major salivary gland neo

Salivary gland tumours comprise almost 5% of head and neck malignancies. Minor salivary gland tumours account for 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms and are usually malignant. The second most common minor salivary gland tumour (12-40% globally) is mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is more frequent in females, occurs in the fifth decade of life and is usually found in the parotid gland. However, the palate is a frequent site when it occurs in the minor glands. We report a case of a high-grade variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the right retromolar trigone of a 21-year m

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas are malignant neoplasms that rarely involve the skin. Composed of both mucus-secreting cells and epidermoid-type cells in various proportions, mucoepidermoid carcinomas occur most commonly in salivary glands. In this case report, we describe a high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma with cutaneous involvement. Although this patient was referred for Mohs' micrographic surgery, further evaluation showed either direct or metastatic extension from the parotid gland to skin and distant metastases to the lung and bone. Despite extensive bone involvement, serum levels of ionized

BACKGROUND: Although usually recognized as malignant, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) has been confused with other primary salivary gland (SG) neoplasms. This article undertook an analysis of a large collection of SDC FNA cases to assess diagnostic accuracy, specificity, and cytopathology.
METHODS: Cytopathology files were searched for SDC with histopathologic validation. FNA biopsy smears were performed using standard techniques.
RESULTS: Seventy cases from 56 patients (M:F, 1.9:1; age range, 26-92 years; mean age, 65 years) met inclusion criteria. All h

BACKGROUND: The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) provides a useful framework for the diagnosis of salivary gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies. In this study, the MSRSGC was applied to salivary gland FNAs in pediatric patients to assess its usefulness and look at pitfalls.
METHODS: The laboratory information system was queried over a 15-year period for all salivary gland FNAs in patients 18 years old or younger. Patient demographics, FNA diagnosis categorized according to the MSRSGC, and follow-up surgical pathology diagnoses were examined and correlate
