A study of the influence of the local environment on the light-induced luminescence enhancement of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) embedded in silica colloids that are dispersed in various solvents is presented. The photoluminescence of the embedded QD is enhanced up to a factor of ten upon photoactivation by ultraviolet or visible light. This enhancement is strongly dependent on the local environment. The reaction mechanism between Fischer carbene complexes and imines to produce beta-lactams has been studied by a combination of computational (DFT) and experimental methodologies. After the photogeneration of metalla-cyclopropanone species, the reaction initiates by 1,3-migration of the metal fragment from the former carbene carbon atom to the oxygen in the S o hypersurface. The photocatalytic degradation of C.I. Direct Red 23 (4BS) in aqueous solutions under UV irradiation was investigated with SrTiO3/CeO2 composite as the catalyst. The SrTiO3/CeO2 powders had more photocatalytic activity for decolorization of 4BS than that of pure SrTiO3 powder under UV irradiation. A bacteriorhodopsin (bR)-silicon n-channel metal-oxide field-effect transistor (NMOSFET) monolithically integrated photoreceiver is demonstrated. The bR film is selectively formed on an external gate electrode of the transistor by electrophoretic deposition. A modified biasing circuit is incorporated, which helps to match the resistance of the bR film to the input impedance of the NMOSFET and to shift the operating point of the transistor to coincide with the maximum gain. The photoreceiver exhibits a responsivity of 4.7 mA/W.

Chlorpromazine and related phenothiazine drugs have been used in human and veterinary medications for more than 40 years, predominantly as psychotropic agents. The photoaquation of the title compound [cis-Cr(phen)2CL+2] has been studied using high performance liquid chromatography. Both monoaquo [cis-Cr(phen)2Cl(OH2)2+2] and diaquo [cis-Cr(phen)2(OH2)3+2] products are formed, and the quantum efficiency for the loss of starting material in Tris buffer (pH 7) under argon and oxygen is 0.010 +/- 0.001 and 0.0026 +/- 0.0002, respectively. Quinine and its d-isomer quinidine can both cause contact allergy as well as photoallergy. Contact allergic cross-reactions between quinine and quinidine are uncommon. In allergic photosensitization the two isomers cross-react, suggesting the possibility that quinine and quinidine after UV exposure are converted to one or more common sensitizing photoproducts. Solutions of quinine and quinidine at 0.1% in ethanol 99.5% were exposed to UVA for 14 h (total dose 201.6 J/cm2). Using thin-layer chromatography, we identified 8 and 6 photoproducts from irradiated quinine and quinidine, respectively.

Focal ischaemia in the rat cerebral cortex was produced by means of a photochemically induced thrombosis of cerebral arteries. This was achieved by intravenous infusion of the photosensitive dye Rose Bengal and illumination of the skull with focused green light. The mechanism whereby tertiary amine local anesthetics affect the activity of membrane proteins was investigated by studying the interaction of phenothiazines with mitochondrial ATP synthase. Exposure to visible light of growth medium containing riboflavin and indole at low concentrations created photoproducts highly toxic to Salmonella typhimurium and other bacteria. No toxicity was detected in the dark or when either of these two components was present singly. Photobilirubin-IX alpha in the serum of a hyperbilirubinaemic newborn infant was demonstrated for the first time by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. The concentrations increased significantly during phototherapy. Corresponding to these changes in the serum, biliary unconjugated bilirubin concentrations increased markedly but photobilirubin-IX alpha was not detected in the bile. Moreover, large amounts of 'unknown pigment' that are diazo-negative appeared in the bile during phototherapy.
