Morphometric evaluation of AgNORs in odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the morphometry of AgNORs in odontogenic cysts and to compare their biologic behavior to determine whether AgNOR morphometry is helpful in predicting the behavior. STUDY DESIGN: Ten cases each of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and radicular cyst (RC) were stained with silver nitrate. Morphometric analysis of 100 selected epithelial and connective tissue cells was done to record their nuclear volume, nuclear perimeter, contour index of the nucleus, AgNOR count, AgNOR proportion and single AgNOR volume. The results were statistically analyzed using AN…

Bilateral ganglion cysts at L4/5 causing central canal stenosis and producing sciatica and neurogenic claudication: a case report.

Symptomatic bilateral juxtafacet ganglion cysts are relatively uncommon in the degenerated spine. The literature describes 16 cases of bilateral ganglion or synovial cysts, none reported sciatica and neurogenic claudication simultaneously. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of bilateral sciatica and neurogenic claudication. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed bilateral lesions related to the facet joints at the L4/5 level, causing bilateral lateral recess stenosis and narrowing of the central canal due to encroachment of these bilateral les

The periapical space--a dynamic interface.

The ultimate aim of endodontic treatment is to encourage the healing of apical periodontitis, or to prevent it from occurring if it was not present prior to treatment. Apical periodontitis is a general term used to describe an inflammatory response to irritation caused by the contents of a root canal system and it has several distinct forms. The most common is a granuloma but this can develop into other disease entities such as an abscess, a periapical pocket cyst or a true cyst, all of which present as radiolucencies. However, periapical radiolucencies may also be caused by extra-radicular in

Spontaneous Resolution of Symptomatic Synovial Cysts of the Lumbar Spine: A Comprehensive Review with Two Illustrative Cases.

Although lumbar synovial cysts (LSCs) are frequently described in the literature, they are a relatively uncommon cause of low back and radicular leg pain. Furthermore, their spontaneous resolution is an even rarer event. The standard treatment of the lumbar synovial cyst is surgical excision. Spontaneous resolution in the literature is a sporadic event. In our experience, we have had two cases where the lumbar synovial cyst disappeared spontaneously. To date, only nine cases of spontaneous resolution of synovial cysts have been documented in the literature. In this discussion, we highlight a p

Application of radiomics features in differential diagnosis of odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVES: Cysts in jaws may have similar radiographic features. However, it is important to clarify the diagnosis prior to surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the radiomic features of radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) as a non-invasive diagnostic alternative to biopsy. METHODS: In total, 161 odontogenic cysts diagnosed histopathologically (55 RCs, 53 DCs, and 53 OKCs) were included in the present study. Each cyst was semi-automatically segmented on CBCT images, and radiomic features were extracted by an observer. A second observer r…

Cystic lesions of the jaws - a clinicopathological study of 322 cases and review of the literature.

Three hundred and twenty-two patients (192 male and 130 female) with cystic lesions of the jaw were successfully diagnosed and treated. One hundred and fifty-five (48%) were radicular cysts, 80 (25%) were dentigerous cysts, 23 (7%) were odontogenic keratocyst (=keratocystic odontogenic tumor), 19 (6%) were eruption cysts, 16 (5%) were traumatic bone cysts, and 29 (9%) were non-odontogenic cysts. There were 95 in the pediatric age group (1 month to 16 years) and 227 in the adult age group (17 years and older). Male to female ratio was 1 in the pediatric age group and 1.7 in the adult age group.…

Immunocytochemical examination of immune cells in periapical granulomata and odontogenic cysts.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were used to determine the presence and distribution of immune cells including lymphocytes, macrophages and Langerhans cells, in normal periodontal ligament, periapical granulomata, periapical cysts and dental developmental cysts. Isolated T-lymphocytes, but not B-lymphocytes, were detected in specimens of non-inflamed periodontal ligament. Increased numbers of T and B lymphocytes were found in all of the lesions examined. Monocytes/macrophages were associated with most periapical granulomata, dental developmental cysts and all periapical cysts. Langerhans cells, i

Mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion of the maxillary sinus: a radiographic challenge.

This article describes 3 patients, each of whom presented with an asymptomatic mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion of the maxillary sinus associated with a nonvital tooth. Based on the radiographic findings, a diagnosis of a collapsed (ruptured) radicular cyst was rendered in each case. A tissue biopsy was performed in 1 case, and the results supported the diagnosis. The radiographic and histopathological features, etiology, pathophysiology, and radiographic differential diagnosis of this condition are discussed.

Solitary myofibroma of the adult mandible: a case report.

A 43-year-old woman presented with a swelling in the anterior mandible appearing radiographically as a well-defined radiolucency causing mobility of the anterior teeth. A clinical diagnosis of a radicular cyst led to removal of the lesion and the associated mobile teeth. Postoperative histopathology led to a diagnosis of intraosseous solitary myofibroma of the mandible. Solitary lesions of myofibroma are exceedingly rare in adult jaws, with only 3 previously documented cases.

Recognition of protein apparently specific to odontogenic keratocyst fluids.

Separate antisera were raised against keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and radicular cyst fluids and used to analyse a range of fluids from cysts of known type. Samples were subjected to crossed immunoelectrophoresis into homologous antiserum through an intermediate gel containing antibody to whole human serum to screen out serum derived components. A major antigen, designated X, which seems to be of epithelial origin but is not a keratin, was identified in keratocyst fluids. X resolves as two bands on sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) with molecular weights of…

[The odontogenic keratocyst--odontogenic cyst or benign tumor?].

The odontogenic keratocyst is the third most common cyst of the jaws, after the follicular and radicular cyst. Keratocysts most commonly occur as single lesions in the jaw of otherwise healthy persons. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts are a well-recognized feature of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. The mandible, especially the third molar region, the angle of the mandible and the ascending ramus are involved far more frequently than the maxilla. Clinically, the cysts often remain asymptomatic and there are two specific histological entities: the orthokeratinized and the parakeratiniz…

A ganglion cyst causing lumbar radiculopathy in a baseball pitcher: a case report.

This report describes a case of a professional baseball pitcher who developed acute left lumbar radicular symptoms after a baseball game and was subsequently sidelined for the rest of the season. Physical examination revealed depressed reflexes in the left posterior tibialis and left medial hamstring muscles, mild weakness in the left extensor hallucis longus, and positive dural tension signs. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an ovoid mass at the L4-L5 level, causing compression of the dura. Surgical resection of the mass resulted in resolution of his symptoms. Pathology revealed that t

[Botryoid odontogenic cyst].

INTRODUCTION: The botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) is a developmental cyst of odontogenic epithelial origin considered as a rare multilocular variety of lateral periodontal cyst (WHO 1992). This cystic lesion site is in the periodontal space of vital teeth. OBSERVATION: A 21-year-old woman consulted for a swelling of the anterior maxillary region. The clinical examination revealed bucal swelling extending from the left central incisor to the first left premolar. The mucosa was normal. The adjacent teeth were vital. X-ray revealed a bilocular radiolucency extending between the roots of teeth 21
