Vertebral body segmentation in CT: An open dataset, deep-learning models and comparison to existing models.

PURPOSE: Vertebral bodies are anatomical landmarks for localizing measurements in applications such as body composition analysis. This study aimed to provide open-access vertebral body labels and deep-learning segmentation models, and to compare their performance in identifying the third lumbar vertebra (L3) with existing solutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thoracic and lumbar vertebral body labels were created for 1460 CT scans from two public datasets. Two residual-encoder nnU-Net models were trained on 1216 cases, and a two-step pipeline was developed. Segmentation performance was tested on

Trustworthy AI for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer: Automatic segmentation and uncertainty quantification.

Accurate segmentation of lung tumors is essential for advancing personalized medicine in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, stage IV NSCLC presents significant challenges due to heterogeneous tumor morphology and the presence of associated conditions including infection, atelectasis and pleural effusion. The complexity of multicentric datasets further complicates robust segmentation across diverse clinical settings. In this study, we evaluate deep-learning-based approaches for automated segmentation of advanced-stage lung tumors using 3D architectures on 387 CT scans from the Deep-Lu

Intelligent detection and grading diagnosis of fresh rib fractures based on deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Accurate detection and grading of fresh rib fractures are crucial for patient management but remain challenging due to the complexity of rib structures on CT images. METHODS: Chest CT images from 383 patients with rib fractures were retrospectively analyzed. The dataset was divided into a training set (n = 306) and an internal testing set (n = 77). An external testing set of 50 patients from the public RibFrac dataset was included. Fractures were classified into severe and non-severe categories. A modified YOLO-based deep learning model was developed for detection and grading. Per

Dual-model approach for accurate chest disease detection using GViT and swin transformer V2.

The precise detection and localization of abnormalities in radiological images are very crucial for clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. To build reliable models, large and annotated datasets are required that contain disease labels and abnormality locations. Most of the time, radiologists face challenges in identifying and segmenting thoracic diseases such as COVID-19, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, and lung cancer due to overlapping visual patterns in X-ray images. This study proposes a dual-model approach: Gated Vision Transformers (GViT) for classification and Swin Transformer V2 for segme

Potential of iterative reconstruction for maxillofacial cone beam CT imaging: technical note.

Iterative reconstruction has been proven to be an effective tool for low-dose computed tomography imaging. However, this technology is currently not available in commercial diagnostic maxillofacial cone beam CT. For this technical note, an iterative reconstruction technique was applied to cone beam CT raw data of two maxillofacial clinical cases to explore its potential for dose reduction and metal artifact reduction. Low-dose imaging was emulated by using only fractions of the clinical projection dataset. The reconstruction algorithms tested were filtered backprojection (FBP) as a reference m

Evaluation of Lower-Dose Spiral Head CT for Detection of Intracranial Findings Causing Neurologic Deficits.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the frequent use of unenhanced head CT for the detection of acute neurologic deficit, the radiation dose for this exam varies widely. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of lower-dose head CT for detection of intracranial findings resulting in acute neurologic deficit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Projection data from 83 patients undergoing unenhanced spiral head CT for suspected neurologic deficits were collected. Cases positive for infarction, intra-axial hemorrhage, mass, or extra-axial hemorrhage required confirmation by histopathology, surgery, progression o

Pulmonary Vascular Morphology Associated With Gas Exchange in Systemic Sclerosis Without Lung Fibrosis.

PURPOSE: Gas exchange in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is known to be affected by fibrotic changes in the pulmonary parenchyma. However, SSc patients without detectable fibrosis can still have impaired gas transfer. We aim to investigate whether pulmonary vascular changes could partly explain a reduction in gas transfer of SSc patients without fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 77 patients whose visual computed tomography (CT) scoring showed no fibrosis. Pulmonary vessels were detected automatically in CT images, and their local radii were calculated. The frequency of occurrence for each

Classification of interstitial lung disease patterns using local DCT features and random forest.

Over the last decade, a plethora of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed aiming to improve the accuracy of the physicians in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases (ILD). In this study, we propose a scheme for the classification of HRCT image patches with ILD abnormalities as a basic component towards the quantification of the various ILD patterns in the lung. The feature extraction method relies on local spectral analysis using a DCT-based filter bank. After convolving the image with the filter bank, q-quantiles are computed for describing the distribution of local f

Conebeam computed tomography: legal considerations.

With the introduction of conebeam computed tomography (CBCT) in the early 2000s, oral and maxillofacial radiology fully entered the modern world of 3-dimensional (3D) radiographic imaging. Although conventional or medical computed tomography (CT) had been available since the 1970s, with few exceptions, it had not been widely used in dentistry. In the early days of conventional CT, the machines were limited in number, restricting their use to only the most beneficial of purposes--for example, imaging of the brain. The cost of a CT examination was also prohibitive. For these reasons, the modalit

Quantitative Comparison of Virtual and True Noncontrast Lung Images in Photon-counting CT: Global and Regional Attenuation Assessment.

Background Use of virtual noncontrast (VNC) images from photon-counting CT (PCCT) may reduce radiation dose and support quantitative lung analysis by obviating the need for separate true noncontrast (TNC) acquisitions. Their accuracy for lung densitometry, however, has not been systematically assessed. Purpose To evaluate agreement between VNC and TNC images for global and regional lung attenuation measurements in thoracic PCCT. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included patients who underwent same-day unenhanced and contrast-enhanced thoracic PCCT between November 2021 and Januar

Comparison of Iterative Metal Artifact Reduction Presets In Ultra-high-resolution Photon-counting CT Angiography of Patients with Total Knee Endoprosthesis.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Ultra-high-resolution (UHR) photon-counting CT angiography (PCCTA) has become the reference standard for non-invasive assessment of peripheral artery disease. In the presence of total knee endoprosthesis, however, metal artifacts hamper visualization of the popliteal vasculature. This study investigated the effect of the different iterative metal artifact reduction (IMAR) settings in patients with knee joint replacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients with knee arthroplasty (74.0 ± 8.5 years; 12 women) undergoing lower extremity UHR-PCCTA between August
