The robot eyes don't have it. The presence of eyes on collaborative robots yields marginally higher user trust but lower performance.

Eye gaze is a prominent feature of human social lives, but little is known on whether fitting eyes on machines makes humans trust them more. In this study we compared subjective and objective markers of human trust when collaborating with eyed and non-eyed robots of the same type. We used virtual reality scenes in which we manipulated distance and the presence of eyes on a robot's display during simple collaboration scenes. We found that while collaboration with eyed cobots resulted in slightly higher subjective trust ratings, the objective markers such as pupil size and task completion time i

Robotic surgery enables safe and comfortable single-incision cholecystectomy: A comparison of robotic and laparoscopic approaches for single-incision surgery.

BACKGROUND: Although single-incision robotic cholecystectomy (SIRC) overcomes various limitations of single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC), it is associated with high cost. In this study, we intended to investigate if SIRC is recommendable and advantageous to patients despite its high cost. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively collected and analysed data of patients who had undergone either SILC (n = 25) or SIRC (n = 50) for benign gallbladder diseases, with identical inclusion criteria, between November 2017 and February 2019. RESULTS: SILC and SIRC showed similar operative

Robotic curative para-aortic lymph node dissection via INfra-mesocolon for gastric cancer: Robotic CAVING approach.

BACKGROUND: Two major surgical complications in D2 plus para-aortic nodal dissection (PAND) for gastric cancer (GC) have been pancreatic fistula and abdominal abscess [1]. The increase in these complications is due to the excessive mobilization of the pancreas. We previously reported a laparoscopic Curative PAND Via INfra-mesocolon for GC (CAVING), which minimizes mobilization of the pancreas [2]. Robotic surgery may be more comfortable than laparoscopic surgery for the surgeon performing this CAVING approach because robotic surgery has ergonomic benefits and advantages, such as native wrist-l

Augmented reality during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: expert robotic surgeons' on-the-spot insights after live surgery.

3D reconstruction of the standard two-dimension cross-sectional imaging has known increasing diffusion. It may represent one of the key points for a tailored treatment planning. Along these lines, we used a novel software for augmented-reality robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (AR-RARP) at our Institution. 3D virtual models of the prostate and the prostate cancer were reconstructed from high resolution (1-mm slices) multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mp-MRI) by M3dics (Turin, Italy). The innovation in the study is represented by the software-based integration of the virtual model

Robotic coloanal anastomosis with or without intersphincteric resection for low rectal cancer: starting with the perianal approach followed by robotic procedure.

BACKGROUND: Coloanal anastomosis (CAA)/intersphincteric resection (ISR) is a promising method of sphincter-preserving surgery for very low rectal cancer. Recently, a robotic system has been attempted in CAA/ISR. By means of a robotic system, an excellent stereoscopic view may be obtained with high illumination, and adequate traction and countertraction can be easily performed in a narrow pelvis using the Endowrist function. During robotic CAA/ISR, although the robotic system is necessary to perform pelvic dissection that comes before the perianal approach, the huge robotic arms located in the

Analysis and objective assessment of transoral robotic surgery.

PURPOSE: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has become a well-established surgical technique for the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer, but the significant learning curve and lack of standardized credentialing have resulted in wide variability in surgical outcomes. This study aims to define procedure-specific competence standards for TORS and test whether a hierarchical task analysis (HTA)-derived procedure-based assessment (PBA) distinguishes experience levels. We examined the ability of PBA and Global Evaluative Assessment of Robotic Skills (GEARS) scores to discriminate between novice and exp

Minimally Invasive/Robotic Surgery for Colon Cancer.

Minimally invasive surgery has transformed colon cancer care, with robotic colectomy emerging as a safe evolution of laparoscopy. This article reviews epidemiology, staging, multimodality therapy, and Level 1 evidence comparing robotic, laparoscopic, and open colectomy. Technical details for right, left, sigmoid, and total colectomies are outlined, emphasizing port placement, key landmarks, and intracorporeal anastomosis. Robotic surgery achieves equivalent oncologic outcomes with lower conversion and faster recovery, though with longer operative times and higher costs. Its role continues to e

Transaxillary Robotic Thyroidectomy: A Novel Technique and Update.

Gasless Transaxillary Robotic Thyroidectomy (G-TART) has undergone significant refinement through the adoption of novel strategies to enhance surgical precision and safety. In this paper, we describe a novel technique that integrates dynamic endoscope repositioning, called the "swing technique", with the use of a specialized intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) probe-Modena Robotic Probe-designed for robotic applications. The procedure, performed using the Da Vinci Xi system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA), incorporates intermittent IONM during recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) dissect

Structured Multimaterial Fibers Enabling Intelligent Robots.

Traditional robots, defined by rigid and bulky architectures, perform poorly in soft, dynamic, or spatially constrained environments such as the human body, and are incompatible with flexible, large-area systems like textiles. These limitations have accelerated the search for robotic paradigms that are smaller, softer, and more adaptive. Inspired by muscle fibers that convert biochemical energy into motion, fiber robots have emerged as a compelling solution that bridges microscale integration with macroscale intelligence. These fibers integrating heterogeneous material components respond to th

Biohybrid organoid-robot sensing for olfaction intelligence.

Owing to the remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the sensory modalities in artificial systems that characterize human embodiment have received significant attention. However, olfaction remains largely absent in artificial systems, primarily due to several technological challenges. In this study, we aim to advance biomimetic olfactory processing by developing a biohybrid organoid-robot (BOR) system. This system integrates an olfactory organoid-based bioelectronic nose, machine learning (ML) decoders, and an odor-triggered robotic platform. By harnessing the sensitivity and
