Apparent diffusion coefficient scalars correlate with near-infrared spectroscopy markers of cerebrovascular autoregulation in neonates cooled for perinatal hypoxic-ischemic injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurologic morbidity remains high in neonates with perinatal hypoxic-ischemic injury despite therapeutic hypothermia. DTI provides qualitative and quantitative information about the microstructure of the brain, and a near-infrared spectroscopy index can assess cerebrovascular autoregulation. We hypothesized that lower ADC values would correlate with worse autoregulatory function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one neonates with hypoxic-ischemic injury were enrolled. ADC scalars were measured in 27 neonates (age range, 4-15 days) in the anterior and posterior centrum sem

Brain mitochondrial oxidative metabolism during and after cerebral hypoxia-ischemia studied by simultaneous phosphorus magnetic-resonance and broadband near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal measurements combining broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P MRS) assessed associations between changes in the oxidation state of cerebral mitochondrial cytochrome-c-oxidase (Δ[oxCCO]) and (31)P metabolite peak-area ratios during and after transient cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the newborn piglet. METHODS: Twenty-four piglets (aged<24 h) underwent transient HI (inspired oxygen fraction 9% and bilateral carotid artery occlusion for ~20 min). Whole-brain (31)P MRS and NIRS data were acquired every minute. In

Investigation of in vivo measurement of cerebral cytochrome-c-oxidase redox changes using near-infrared spectroscopy in patients with orthostatic hypotension.

We have previously used a continuous four-wavelength near-infrared spectrometer to measure changes in the cerebral concentrations of oxy-haemoglobin (Delta[HbO(2)] and deoxy-haemoglobin (Delta[HHb]) during head-up tilt in patients with primary autonomic failure. The measured changes in light attenuation also allow calculation of changes in the concentration of oxidized cytochrome-c-oxidase (Delta[(ox)CCO]), and this paper analyses the Delta[(ox)CCO] during the severe episodes of orthostatic hypotension produced by this experimental protocol. We studied 12 patients during a passive change in po

Detection of lower torso ischemia by near-infrared spectroscopy during cardiopulmonary bypass in a 6.8-kg infant with complex aortic anatomy.

Neonates and small infants with congenital heart disease and complex cardiac and vascular anatomy are particularly prone to episodes of complete or incomplete regional ischemia during cardiopulmonary bypass. These episodes may result either from inhomogeneous distribution of arterial blood flow via the aortic cannula or from impaired drainage of blood via the venous cannulae. However, techniques for continuous routine monitoring of regional perfusion in neonates or small infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass are extremely limited. Over recent years, transcranial near-infrared spectroscopy

Correlation between cerebral oxygen saturation measured by near-infrared spectroscopy and jugular oxygen saturation in patients with severe closed head injury.

UNLABELLED: Near-infrared spectroscopy has been used to monitor cerebral oxygen saturation during cerebral circulatory arrest and carotid clamping. However, its utility has not been demonstrated in more complex situations, such as in patients with head injuries. The authors tested this method during conditions that may alter the arteriovenous partition of cerebral blood in different ways. METHODS: The authors compared changes in measured cerebral oxygen saturation and other hemodynamic parameters, including jugular venous oxygen saturation, in nine patients with severe closed head injury duri

Development of a rapid detection method for patch thickness based on machine vision and near infrared spectroscopy: a case study of curcumin patch.

Patches represent a significant dosage form within transdermal drug delivery systems. In the quality control of transdermal patches, thickness not only affects the drug loading per unit area and drug release behavior but also is associated with patient usability and product stability. Targeting curcumin patch, a method used for thickness distribution monitoring utilizing machine vision coupled with near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was proposed. Twenty-nine batches of patches were prepared via the central composite design. The RGB color space data were extracted from the captured images of all

Development of mucoadhesive films with high polaprezinc content for oral mucositis: A study on formulation and near-infrared spectroscopy-based quality control.

Polaprezinc (PLZ) has drawn attention to its potential to prevent oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. PLZ-containing lozenges have been developed in previous reports; however, for patients with mucositis, taking them may be challenging because of pain. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a mucoadhesive film containing the same amount (18.75 mg) of PLZ as a lozenge as a new dosage form to replace lozenges and evaluate its characteristics. First, various films were created using solvent casting to screen polymers with high PLZ content. Thus, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) w

Portable near-infrared spectroscopy: A rapid and accurate blood test for diagnosis of Haemonchus contortus infection and for targeted selective treatment of sheep.

Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent and important gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) in small ruminants. Since it reduces the packed cell volume (PCV), causing anemia, early diagnosis can be used for targeted selective treatment (TST) of sheep, reducing antiparasitic drug use and anthelmintic resistance. This study aimed to predict PCV values through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and to develop a classification and diagnosis model of H. contortus infection using PCV values, eggs per gram of feces (EPG) counts and mean daily weight gain (DWG). A total of 1728 spectra were collected from

The Role of Intracoronary Plaque Imaging with Intravascular Ultrasound, Optical Coherence Tomography, and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease.

The development of multiple diagnostic intracoronary imaging modalities has increased our understanding of coronary atherosclerotic disease. These imaging modalities, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), have provided a method to study plaques and introduced the concept of plaque vulnerability. They are being increasingly used for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) optimization and are invaluable tools in research studying the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), in-stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosi
