In order to obtain sufficient quantities of pure populations of cells or a single cell from surrounding tissue for analytical investigation, we have developed an ultrasonic microdissection system. The system utilizes a vision-based method for detecting the contact between the microdissection needle tip and a target surface. We report an optically transparent ultrasonic device, consisting of indium-tin-oxide-coated lithium niobate (LNO), for use in particle manipulation. Although alcohols are useful cosolvents for producing amyloid fibrils, the underlying mechanism of alcohol-dependent fibrillation is unclear. We studied the alcohol-induced fibrillation of hen egg-white lysozyme at various concentrations of ethanol, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE), and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP). OBJECTIVES: Upper extremity reconstruction presents a functional and aesthetic challenge in plastic surgery. Exposure of vital structures often requires vascularized soft tissue coverage to achieve primary wound healing and optimize functional results. Specifically, the serratus fascial flap may satisfy the functional and cosmetic requirements for small- to medium-sized soft tissue defects of the upper extremity with limited donor site morbidity. We describe our technique of serratus fascial flap harvest, using the Harmonic SYNERGY curved blade (Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Cincinnati, Ohio).
