Classification of benign breast disorders. The ANDI classification based on physiological processes within the normal breast.

Terminology in benign breast conditions has been confused by multiplicity of terms which do not relate accurately to clinical or histological patterns. Further confusion arises because terminology is not based on sound concepts of pathogenesis. The ANDI classification has been put forward as a nomenclature based on pathogenesis to replace the division of benign breast disorders into 'normal' and 'disease'. It recognizes that a spectrum exists for most conditions which extends from normal, through mild abnormality--'aberrations'--to disease. This classification allows precise definition of an i…

The Alignment and Compensation (AC) Classification of High-Grade Spondylolisthesis: Description and Validation of a Novel Biomechanical Classification.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional reliability study. OBJECTIVE: To propose and validate a novel biomechanical classification for high-grade spondylolisthesis (HGS) that incorporates compensatory mechanisms into the assessment of sagittal alignment patterns. BACKGROUND: Existing classifications of HGS are primarily descriptive, rely on parameters often distorted by sacral endplate dysplasia, offer limited guidance for surgical decision-making and do not completely capture the spectrum of compensation in sagittal alignment. The new classification system defines four alignment types: type 1: propor…

Assessing the Reliability of Miller's Classification and Cairo's Classification in Classifying Gingival Recession Defects: A Comparison Study.

Background and Objectives: Gingival recession results in adverse aesthetics and root sensitivity, and there is a need to treat and prevent its further progression. To overcome these problems, various advances have been made by clinicians in treating gingival recession based on the type of gingival recession. Miller's classification has been used for a long time to classify the type of recession. However, certain limitations have been found with use of Miller's classification such as a lack of clarity in the method for measuring soft and hard tissue loss in the interproximal area. Cairo classif…

Talocalcaneal coalition classifications: A critical analysis review and suggested new classification system with implications for treatment.

Talocalcaneal coalitions (TCC) is the second most frequent tarsal coalition reported. Our aim was to review talocalcaneal coalition classifications and to propose a new classification emphasizing a therapeutic approach. None of the classifications described for TCC mention the presence of flatfoot or valgus hindfoot, which are the key elements when defining the optimal treatment of this disease. We defined five clinical and radiological factors that would guide the choice of surgical treatment and based on these, we proposed a new classification system.

WHO Classification of Tumours fifth edition: evolving issues in the classification, diagnosis, and prognostication of prostate cancer.

The fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Urinary and Male Genital Systems encompasses several updates to the classification and diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma as well as incorporating advancements in the assessment of its prognosis, including recent grading modifications. Some of the salient aspects include: (1) recognition that prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN)-like carcinoma is not synonymous with a pattern of ductal carcinoma, but better classified as a subtype of acinar adenocarcinoma; (2) a specific section on treatment-related neuroendocrine prostatic carci…

The simplified Kyoto classification score is consistent with the ABC method of classification as a grading system for endoscopic gastritis.

The ABC method combined with Helicobacter pylori antibody and serum pepsinogen is a useful predictive method for stomach cancer. Kyoto classification is a new grading system for endoscopic gastritis. However, the consistency of the Kyoto score with the ABC method remains unclear. The Kyoto classification score, which ranges from 0 to 8, is based on the following findings: atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, diffuse redness, nodularity, and enlarged folds. Furthermore, we defined a simplified Kyoto classification score as the sum of scores of just atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. The association …

[Criticism of the gonioscopic classifications of the glaucoma: with particular reference to the classification issued by the European Glaucoma Society in 2008].

PURPOSE: To critically analyze the gonioscopic classifications of glaucoma, especially of the classification issued by the European Glaucoma Society in 2008, in order to reveal its advantages and shortcomings. METHODS: The paper tries to determine the extent to which this classification is clear (being based on a coherent and consistently followed set of criteria), is comprehensive (framing all forms of glaucoma), helps to understand the sickness (using a logical framing system), and facilitates therapeutic decision making (offering direct therapeutic suggestions). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Th…

Reassessment of the predictive value of the Forrest classification for peptic ulcer rebleeding and mortality: can classification be simplified?

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: This study aimed to reassess whether the Forrest classification is still useful for the prediction of rebleeding and mortality in peptic ulcer bleedings and, based on this, whether the classification could be simplified. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospective registry data on peptic ulcer bleedings were collected and categorized according to the Forrest classification. The primary outcomes were 30-day rebleeding and all-cause mortality rates. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to test whether simplification of the Forrest classification into high risk (Fo…

The complement of the load-sharing classification for the thoracolumbar injury classification system in managing thoracolumbar burst fractures.

BACKGROUND: The classification and therapeutic strategy for thoracolumbar burst fractures are controversial. The load-sharing classification (LSC) and thoracolumbar injury classification system (TLICS) are both quantitative evaluation systems for thoracolumbar burst fractures. We hypothesized that their combination would be helpful not only for surgical indications but also for deciding on the surgical approach. However, no reports have evaluated the relationship between them. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the LSC and TLICS and investigate the clinical usefu…

Explainable Transformer-Based Retinal Disease Classification.

Retinal diseases are a leading cause of visual impairment globally. Early detection is crucial for effective management, and recent advances in ocular imaging and deep learning have facilitated the development of automated diagnostic systems. Traditional deep learning methods often struggle to effectively capture the overall structural context of the retina and the subtle, localised pathological features required for accurate multi label classification. Moreover, their decision-making processes typically lack transparency, limiting clinical trust and adoption. In this study, we propose an expl…

Rapid epigenomic classification of acute leukemia.

Acute leukemia requires precise molecular classification and urgent treatment. However, standard-of-care diagnostic tests are time-intensive and do not capture the full spectrum of acute leukemia heterogeneity. Here, we developed a framework to classify acute leukemia using genome-wide DNA methylation profiling. We first assembled a comprehensive reference cohort (n = 2,540 samples) and defined 38 methylation classes. Methylation-based classification matched standard-pathology lineage classification in most cases and revealed heterogeneity in addition to that captured by genetic categories. Us…

Standardisation of Dog Sperm Morphology Classification.

Sperm morphology is an important component of dog fertility analysis. Visual examination is the gold standard technique for evaluation, but large variations within and across evaluators have been documented. Databases of sperm morphology images are valuable practical aids for training and performance testing and can improve sperm classification standardisation; however, such databases are only useful when the material is expertly classified to serve as a reference. The objective of this study was to build an expertly annotated database of sperm images and to generate an illustrated guide with …

Von Willebrand disease: classification and epidemiology.

Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a highly heterogeneous inherited bleeding disorder caused by reduced levels or activity of von Willebrand factor (VWF). VWD is associated with a wide spectrum of clinical and laboratory phenotypes, but diagnosis is based on three main criteria: a positive bleeding history, low levels of circulating VWF and autosomal inheritance patterns. VWD is classified into quantitative VWF deficiencies (type 1, partial and type 3, almost total) and peculiar qualitative defects (type 2 A, B, M, and N). The prevalence of VWD has been estimated by epidemiological investigations
