Cochlear implant users experience difficulties controlling their vocalizations compared to normal hearing peers. However, less is known about their voice quality. The primary aim of the present study was to determine if cochlear implant users' voice quality would be categorized as dysphonic by the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS). A secondary aim was to determine if vocal quality is further impacted when using bilateral implants compared to using only one implant. The final aim was to determine how residual hearing impacts voice quality. Twenty-s

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implants (CIs) were noncompatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) initially; however, recently, implants have beco … erformed a head MRI, using a head bandage and without magnet removal in five patients who underwent cochlear implantation at our department and analyzed the MRI findings.
RESULTS: Without magnet removal, diffusion-weighted images and T2 star-weighted images had larger artifacts and less useful images. T1-weighted images, T2-weighted images (T2WIs), T2-weighted fluid-a …

Cochlear implantation gives children with prelingual severe hearing loss and deafness the opportunity to develop their hearing abilities, speech, language, cognitive abilities and academic skills with adequate rehabilitation. The aim of the research was to analyze verbal, figural and arithmetic fluency and their interrelationship in children with a cochlear implant (CI) and children with normal hearing (NH). A total of 46 children with CI and 110 children with NH, aged 9 to 16, participated in the research. Verbal fluency was assessed using phonemic and semantic fluency, and non-verbal fluency…

BACKGROUND: To achieve better speech performance following cochlear implantation (CI), measuring the patient's cochlear duct length (CDL) and determining the appropriate length of the CI array are important.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the CDL in CI patients after using the OTOPLAN software preoperatively and compare the results of angular insertion depth (AID) estimation by OTOPLAN and postoperative radiography.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 105 Japanese CI patients with normal cochleae. We measured the CDL using OTOPLAN and the position of the tip channel of the electrode for eac…

HYPOTHESIS: Electrical tinnitus suppression by cochlear implants requires stimulation of a subset of neural elements in the cochlea.
BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the phantom perception of sound in the ears and is a known correlate of hearing loss. Cochlear implants restore hearing and are known to lessen or extinguish tinnitus. The amount of electrical charge required and the number and location of electrodes required to extinguish tinnitus with a cochlear implant are factors that remain poorly understood.
METHODS: In a subject with single-sided deafness, with tinnitus in the deaf ear, we enabled

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implants (CIs) are a well-established treatment modality for hearing loss due to neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). Our aim is to investigate variables that affect longitudinal performance of CIs among patients with NF2.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review at a single academic institution consisting of patients who have received cochlear implants following hearing loss due to NF2.
METHODS: The primary outcome examined was CI disuse or explantation. Associated clinical and surgical variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics. These included postoperative pure tone ave

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the peer-reviewed literature on the efficacy of auditory training (AT) on auditory outcomes in post lingually deafened adults with cochlear implants (CIs).
DESIGN: A systematic review.
STUDY SAMPLE: Searches of five electronic databases yielded 10 studies published after 2010 that met the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: For post lingually deafened adults with CIs, the evidence is suggestive that some AT can improve some auditory outcomes compared to no training. More specifically, the evidence suggests that phonemic training can improve identification of tra

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of auditory implants in children with CHARGE syndrome and describe the evolution in management of hearing loss in this complex population.
METHODS: A retrospective case review was performed at a tertiary referral center. Children with CHARGE syndrome who received either a cochlear implant (CI) or auditory brainstem implant (ABI) were included. Clinical records, demographic information, CHARGE features, neuroimaging, audiology, hearing rehabilitation interventions, operative notes, and outcomes were reviewed.
RESULTS: Thirteen children with CHARGE syndrome unde

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Infants with profound hearing loss are typically considered for cochlear implantation. Many insurance providers deny implantation to children with developmental impairments because they have limited potential to acquire verbal communication. We took advantage of differing insurance coverage restrictions to compare outcomes after cochlear implantation or continued hearing aid use.
METHODS: Young children with deafness were identified prospectively from 2 different states, Texas and California, and followed longitudinally for an average of 2 years. Children in cohort …

OBJECTIVE: This study compared two different versions of an electrophysiology-based software-guided cochlear implant fitting method with a procedure employing standard clinical software. The two versions used electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) thresholds for either five or all twenty-two electrodes to determine sound processor stimulation level profiles. Objective and subjective performance results were compared between software-guided and clinical fittings.
DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, single-subject repeated-measures with permuted ABCA sequences.

OBJECTIVE: Early diagnosis of cochlear implant failures (CIF) is a critical part of post-implantation follow-up. Diagnosis is challenging and time consuming. Our study aimed to describe diagnoses of CIF with emphasis on soft failures (SF), focusing on symptoms, time from symptoms to replacement, and differences between SF and hard failures (HF).
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records in a tertiary care referral paediatric medical centre including all patients who experienced CIF during 2000-2020.
RESULTS: Of 1004 CI surgeries, 72 (7.2%) cases of CIF were included, of which 60 CIF

Cochlear implants are expensive surgeries. It was expected that by the end of the year 2021 about 80,000 cochlear implants will be shipped worldwide. Alone in India 500 cochlear implants are placed in a year. Patients for these procedures are mostly young children with prelingual deafness. They often pose challenges like anxiety, post operative nausea and vomiting, haemorrhage and CSF leak or flap necrosis. Parent child separation is another concern in a deaf paediatric patient. A meticulous anaesthetic management provides comfortable induction and a stable intra operative hemodynamics to give

Cochlear and brainstem implants have been included on the list of reimbursable products (LPPR) in France since March of 2009. The implants were initially inscribed for 5 years, after which an application for renewal with the French National Commission for the Evaluation of Medical Devices and Health Technologies (Commission Nationale d'évaluation des dispositifs médicaux et des technologies de santé - CNEDiMTS) was required [Haute Autorité de santé, 2009]. Upon registration to the list of reimbursable products, the companies and the reference centers for cochlear and brainstem implants were as
