Visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were used for objective testing of visual functions during treatment courses of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) in adult patients in the Czech Republic. AIM: We tested the hypothesis that early recovery of cortical SEP would be associated with milder hypoxic-ischemic injury and better outcome after resuscitation from CA.
METHODS: Sixteen adult male Wistar rats were subjected to asphyxial cardiac arrest. Half underwent 7min of asphyxia (Group CA7) and half underwent 9min (Group CA9). Continuous SEPs from median nerve stimulation were recorded from these rats for 4h immediately following CA, and at 24, 48, and 72h. Clinical recovery was evaluated using the Neurologic Deficit Scale.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMPs) are saccular responses to acoustic stimuli. They can be recorded from the sternocleidomastoid muscle ipsilaterally to the stimulated ear. Their reflex arc includes the ipsilateral vestibular nuclei.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prognostic role of late auditory (N100) and cognitive evoked potentials (MMN) for awakening in a cohort of comatose patients categorized by etiology.
METHODS: The authors prospectively studied a series of 346 comatose patients. Coma was caused by stroke (n = 125), trauma (n = 96), anoxia (n = 64), complications of neurosurgery (n = 54), and encephalitis (n = 7). METHODS: In 1998, 21 konzo subjects (15 females and 6 males; mean age 21 years) underwent a SEP study with a two-channel-equipment (Medtronic Keypoint, Denmark) whereas in 2000, 15 subjects (7 females and 8 males; mean age 21 years) participated in a study with a 4-channel-equipment.

Twenty-seven in-patients with hemiplegia following brain injury were studied by using upper extremity median nerve somatosensory evoked patentials (SVEP), Brunnstrom assessment in hemiplegic hand and assessment of the patients' activities of daily lioing (ADL) (Barthel index). The upper extremity median nerve SEP on the affected and normal sides was determined. By using Kovindha standard, upper extremity median nerve SEP was graded in accordance with N20. The correlation between the differences of SEP N20 amplitude and the latencies on the both sides and the Barthel index scores was analyzed.
