Design Considerations, Field Validation and Perspectives of a Low-Power Wearable Sensor Collar for Continuous Monitoring of Ruminants.

Wearable sensors provide significant potential for continuous animal monitoring. However, the practical implementation of such technologies on livestock farms for animal monitoring raises significant challenges related to power efficiency, robustness, and reliability. In this research paper, we propose the design, implementation, and field testing of a low-energy, low-cost, multi-sensor wearable collar specifically designed for continuous monitoring of ruminants using LoRa. The proposed collar is based on a modular hardware platform that incorporates inertial sensing, temperature sensing, and

Pacinian Corpuscle-Inspired Strain Conversion Enables Ultrasensitive, Linear, and Broad-Range Piezoelectric Sensing for Cardiovascular Health Monitoring.

High-fidelity wrist pulse acquisition, essential for the early diagnosis and precise management of cardiovascular diseases, requires tactile sensors with both ultrasensitive and linear electromechanical responses. Biological Pacinian corpuscles transduce mechanical stimuli into localized strain via concentric lamellar architecture, enabling subtle and dynamic perception of pressure fluctuations. Inspired by the working mode of Pacinian corpuscles, this work presents a piezoelectric tactile sensor featuring a multilayer grooved architecture that transduces external pressure into localized in-pl

Real-time monitoring of moist wound healing by a flexible adaptive impedance sensing patch.

Moist wound healing has been recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a preferred approach for skin wound treatment. The global market for moist wound dressings is valued at approximately USD 4.83 billion, driven by the ability of moist wound environments to promote faster healing, improve recovery quality, and reduce pain. Covering the wound with dressings, mostly hydrocolloid-based, is a preferred method to maintain a moist wound environment and isolate this environment from external interferences. Currently, commercial hydrocolloid dressings have already reached satisfa

Flexible circuit-free system via passive modulated ultrasound for wireless thoracic pressure monitoring.

Implantable medical devices (IMDs) provide effective medical solutions for diverse health care applications. Electrical circuits are crucial for implantable devices due to the requirement of intended functions, such as communication with external devices. Circuits have several risks, such as biocompatibility issues, power limitations, or size constraints. In this work, we propose a passive modulated ultrasound (PMU) principle for IMDs and develop a circuit-free ultrasonic system (CUS) for thoracic pressure monitoring. The PMU principle can passively modulate monitored physiological signals int

Large-Area Fabrication of a Highly Stable Wearable Temperature Sensing System via Dispensing Printing: Carbon-Based Electronic Ink, Self-Charging Sensing, and Remote Human Monitoring.

With the rapid advancement of flexible electronics in healthcare diagnostics, real-time body temperature monitoring using electronic skin has become increasingly important for assessing and predicting human health status. Currently, most self-charging temperature sensing systems rely on thermoelectric effects, which are limited to transient detection and lack the resolution necessary to track subtle fluctuations in body temperature (e.g., <0.1 °C), thus constraining their practical use in wearable temperature monitoring. In this study, we developed a high-viscosity carbon-based electronic ink

Minimally Invasive, Bioadaptive Multimodal Sensor Probe with Safe Deployment for Real-Time Acute Compartment Syndrome Diagnosis.

Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is a serious medical condition that arises from increased pressure within osteofascial compartments, leading to impaired blood flow and potential tissue damage. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for preventing permanent damage. Current methods rely largely on qualitative assessments with limited accuracy, and those that exploit invasive pressure measurements often prove inadequate. Herein, a soft materials-based multimodal sensor probe is introduced, as well as the mechanical and thermal influences to monitor intra-compartmental pressure, tissue oxygen s

A crosslinked eutectogel for ultrasensitive pressure and temperature monitoring from nostril airflow.

Accurate detection of nostril airflow is vital for real-time respiratory monitoring. However, the developed methods only rely on single stimulus sensing for nostril airflow, which is extremely susceptible to interference in the complex environment, and severely affects the accuracy of detection results. Here, a multimodal integrated eutectogel sensor is explored to simultaneously sense the pressure and temperature stimuli of nostril airflow, by independently outputting capacitance and resistance, respectively, without cross-coupling. The completely physical crosslinking and the synergistic int

Subcutaneous sensors for monitoring congestion and to reduce heart failure hospitalizations-a viable middle ground between deep implantable intravascular monitoring devices and wearable technologies?

Congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a leading cause of hospitalization and mortality worldwide. Continuous monitoring is crucial for early detection of decompensation, potentially reducing hospital admissions and improving outcomes. Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) have been established as useful therapeutic interventions that also support continuous monitoring in order to detect early signs of decompensation. However, prior to CIED implantation, effective continuous monitoring solutions are lacking. They exist at two extremes: deep implantable intravascular solutions such as

BACKGROUND: Flexible wearable medical devices drive healthcare transformation via non-invasive, real-time physiological monitoring and personalized management. Traditional rigid devices lack long-term comfort, while chronic disease care and telemedicine demand reliable, patient-centered solutions. Advances in materials (carbon nanomaterials, liquid metals, hydrogels) enable stretchable, biocompatible substrates adapting to bodily movements. Innovative sensing (PPG, EEG, sweat-based detection) tracks blood pressure, glucose, and neural signals accurately. Key challenges include insufficient sen

The role of macroalgae in modulating coral calcification: Mixed species responses in a changing reef environment.

The ever increasing dominance of macroalgae on coral reefs is posing new challenges for coral growth and reef resilience. As a part of the continuous coral community monitoring program in Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve (GoMBR) in India, we observed that a few species of macroalgae were persistent throughout the year and remained in physical contact with corals. The effects of such competitive macroalgal interaction on the functional traits of corals are least understood. A series of insitu experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of three macroalgal species on the calcific

The Brussels consensus for non-invasive ICP monitoring when invasive systems are not available in the care of TBI patients (the B-ICONIC consensus, recommendations, and management algorithm).

BACKGROUND: Invasive systems are commonly used for monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and are considered the gold standard. The availability of invasive ICP monitoring is heterogeneous, and in low- and middle-income settings, these systems are not routinely employed due to high cost or limited accessibility. The aim of this consensus was to develop recommendations to guide monitoring and ICP-driven therapies in TBI using non-invasive ICP (nICP) systems. METHODS: A panel of 41 experts, that regularly use nICP systems for guiding TBI care, was established. Th

False Crisis Alarms in Cardiopulmonary Monitoring:: Identification, Causes, and Clinical Implications.

The systematic annotation of crisis alarms reveals a high number of false alarms for both ventricular tachycardia and asystole, which are best identified by inspecting simultaneous multilead electrocardiographs. Among the few true crisis alarms, 11 were categorized as ventricular tachycardia, while the remaining 11 were classified as asystole. These false crisis alarms were primarily attributed to artifacts and low QRS voltage. Future research should use artificial intelligence that mimics critical care professionals to identify and evaluate false crisis alarms. This could enhance the algorith

Polymer-Layered Optical Wearable (PLOW) for Healthcare Applications: Temperature and Stretching Monitoring.

Thermal and stretching characteristics are crucial variables in healthcare, robotics, and human-machine interaction applications. Here, we present a single-mode fiber-based, balloon-shaped, single- and dual polymer-layered optical wearable (PLOW) system that can sense both temperature and stretching. These two types of PLOWs are compared in terms of their detection performance across all criteria. Dual polymer-based systems have a substantial temperature sensitivity of -1.39 nm/°C, while single polymer ones show a sensitivity of -0.18 nm/°C. The increased sensitivity is attributed to the highe
