Effects of mixed traffic flow and time pressure on violated driving behaviors of bus drivers.

This study aimed to examine the effects of mixed traffic flow (MTF) environments with time pressure (TP) on violated driving behaviours (VDBs) of bus drivers. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among bus drivers. Factor analyses, partial correlation and linear regression analyses were utilised to explore the associations among VDB, MTF and TP. Our results proposed two novel measurements of MTF and TP and one modified VDB scale. Bus drivers who perceived a higher presence of motorcycles and more dangerous interactions among vehicles were less likely to participate in VDB. Those who perc…

Older Motorcyclists in Ireland.

Older motorcyclists are under-recognised as vulnerable road users. Using Irish data from the Central Statistics Office, the Road Safety Authority and the Healthcare Pricing Office, we explored the trend of ageing riders and factors in older motorcyclist collisions and injuries. In 2005, 17 motorcyclists aged 55 and over were injured compared to 31 in 2012. Motorcyclists aged between 30-49 years and 50 years and over have longer lengths of stay compared to riders <30. The percentage of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 750cc or more increased from 39.6% in 2007 to 46.7% in 2015. Older moto…

Abducens Nerve Palsy and Ipsilateral Horner Syndrome in a Patient With Carotid-Cavernous Fistula.

The combination of abducens nerve palsy and ipsilateral Horner syndrome was first described by Parkinson and considered as a localizing sign of posterior cavernous sinus lesions. The authors present a case with right abducens nerve palsy with ipsilateral Horner syndrome in a patient with carotid-cavernous fistula because of head trauma. The patient was referred to the ophthalmology clinic with diplopia complaint after suffering a head trauma during a motorcycle accident. Cerebral angiography showed low-flow carotid-cavernous fistula.

Colonic strangulation and perforation in traumatic abdominal hernia: unusual emergency treatment for a rare trauma complication.

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is a muscle-fascial rupture due to a blunt direct or indirect trauma. High energy trauma is the principal cause of TAWH and they are consequence of car accidents in 50-70% and motorcycle in 15-20%. Similar trauma is described even in infant age following bicycle handlebar trauma (handlebar injuries). Surgical treatment can be urgent or secondary according to the lesions of the patient. Visceral complications secondary to TAWH are extremely rare and they are difficult to treat.

Percutaneous Straightening and Exchange Nailing of a Bent Intramedullary Nail Following Tibial Shaft Fracture: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bending of tibial intramedullary (IM) nails is an extremely rare complication, usually resulting from high-energy trauma. Management options are not standardized, and removal or exchange nailing can be technically challenging. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 23-year-old male who sustained a displaced fracture of the left tibial shaft following a motorcycle accident. He was treated with closed reduction and IM nailing (9 mm), with uneventful recovery and fracture union at 6 months. One year later, the patient was involved in another motorcycle accident, leading to acute pain

Endoscopic fasciotomy for chronic exertional compartment syndrome of the forearm: Clinical results of a new technique using an endoscopic carpal tunnel release device.

Exertional compartment syndrome of the forearm is a rare pathology, occurring almost exclusively in motorcycle racers. The results of endoscopic techniques are similar to those of open fasciotomies, but they are less invasive and leave smaller scars. The aim of our study was to present a new endoscopic technique for superficial fasciotomy using the Agee® system and to describe the results. This was a single-center, retrospective descriptive study of 21 patients (36 forearms) operated on between 2006 and 2016. All patients but one were competitive motorcycle racers. The mean operating time was

Public attitudes towards motorcyclists' safety: a qualitative study from the United Kingdom.

The aim of the reported research was to examine the perceptions of road user safety amongst different road users and examine the link between attitudes, empathy and skill in motorcycle safety behaviour. Motorcyclists were perceived by the study participants, members of the public at four different locations at the UK (including motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists), as a group be at a high risk of accidents on the road. This was due to perceived behavioural characteristics of motorcyclists--who were viewed as 'thrill seekers'--as well as observed behaviours on the road. This, coupled with the p

Characteristics of alcohol-related injuries in adolescents visiting the emergency department.

Alcohol is frequently a factor affecting emergency department patients, and alcohol consumption is more common among those who are injured. In Korea, the socioeconomic impact of alcohol has been enormous because of traditional permissive attitudes toward alcohol. Juvenile drinking has increased recently; consequently, an increase in alcohol-related injuries is likely in this population. Therefore, we compared the characteristics and severity of alcohol-related injuries in adolescents and adults. All injured patients seen at six EDs throughout 2007 were included. We obtained data from the 'Deve

Injury Patterns of Electric-Scooter Related Trauma: A Systematic Review With Proportion Meta-Analysis.

Electric scooter (ES)-related injuries are increasing but poorly described. Clinicians need more information to be prepared for these patients. We supposed two prevalent patterns of patients: mildly injured (predominant upper-limb injuries) and severely injured (predominant head trauma). This study aims to understand the frequency of ES-related injuries and patients' characteristics despite the heterogeneity of data currently available. A systematic review with a proportion meta-analysis was conducted on studies with a multidisciplinary description of ES-related injuries in adult patients (PRO

Analysis of Electric Bicycle Riders' Use of Mobile Phones While Riding on Campus.

Based on the theory of rational action (TRA), overconfidence theory (OT), and deterrence theory (DT), this study explores the reasons for mobile phone use by Chinese students riding electronic bicycles (e-bikes) in Fuzhou City. We tested the reliability and validity of an extended TPB, OT and DT questionnaire (with 531 eligible responses) and constructed a structural equation model of mobile phone use behavior while riding e-bikes, based on the improved model. The structural equation model (SEM) is used to evaluate the relationship between the internal factors of mobile phone riding behavior.
