BACKGROUND: Plasma and serum are often used interchangeably for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) purposes, and concentrations of some drugs are reported to be lower in serum than in plasma when collected into blood collection tubes containing a gel separator. TDM is recommended for clozapine, although few studies have compared concentrations between plasma and serum. Therefore, we investigated the comparability of dipotassium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid human plasma and serum from blood collection tubes containing a gel separator for the measurement of clozapine and norclozapine.

AIMS: Stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are very common conditions with a proportion of patients requiring implantation of synthetic materials for a durable repair. However increasing numbers of post-surgical complications have been reported related to the use of polypropylene meshes. One hypothesis for the adverse response is poor mechanical matching of the relatively stiff polypropylene mesh particularly as materials in the pelvic floor will need to cope with decades of distension as occurs with increase of intraabdominal pressure on coughing, laughing, or sneezing.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results associated with the transvaginal repair of genital prolapse using a tension free light-weight polypropylene mesh.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifteen patients have been treated in a single centre. Pre-operative and operative data and complications were recorded. Patients were examined at 1, 6 and 12 months. Anatomical failure was defined as follows: Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) stage II or more.

Incisional herniorrhaphy remains a formidable challenge to the general surgeon. Recurrence rates after primary repair are reported between 31-54 per cent while tension-free repairs with prosthetic mesh have lowered this rate to 10 per cent.
