SAXS study of electric field-induced microstructural evolution in a polyaniline-based conductive hydrogel.

The behavior of conductive polymer networks under applied electric field plays a critical role in the electro-driven drug release of conductive hydrogels. This study investigates a novel conductive hydrogel composed of quaternized chitosan grafted with polyaniline (QCSPA) crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and borate (BA), focusing on its structural evolution under varying electric fields. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), analyzed with the correlation length model and Gaussian spherical domain (GSD) fitting, was used to quantitatively characterize the multiscale structure of the hydr…

Physicochemical Reinforcement Unlocks Sterilization-Stable Anisotropic Hydrogels for Cell-Compatible Mock Arteries.

In vitro arterial models offer ethical and robust alternatives for vascular research but require cytocompatible materials that replicate physiological mechanics. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels produced by directional freezing and salting-out (PVA DFSO) are anisotropic yet lack stability for cell culture. Herein, methacrylated PVA (PVA-MA) hydrogels were fabricated by integrating directional freezing, salting-out, and ultraviolet (UV)-mediated covalent crosslinking to enhance mechanical performance and physicochemical stability. Two fabrication routes were examined: UV polymerization befor

Mechanically-activated electrochemical implantable micro-supercapacitors boosting wound healing in the small intestine.

Addressing the spatial constraints inherent in wound therapy within narrow living organisms (e.g., intestinal tracts), the advancement of implantable micro-energy devices shows significant promise, which still faces the challenge of solving the trade-off between high energy and limited volume. Here we report a high-capacity implantable micro-supercapacitor based on the compact carbon nanotubes (CNTs) constricted by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) framework, where the ionic conductive PVA network undergoes isotropic inward shrinkage, leading to bending deformation of CNTs and generating internal strain…

Harnessing the therapeutic potential of chitosan/PVA/AEAPTS-modified bentonite clay hydrogels for enhanced angiogenesis and rapid wound healing.

Angiogenesis plays a crucial role in wound healing, as the development of new capillaries promotes granulation tissue formation, which provides the basis for extracellular matrix buildup and tissue regeneration. Impaired angiogenesis is a critical factor in delayed wound healing. This study explores the potential of chitosan/poly vinylalcohol (PVA)/bentonite clay modified with N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTS) hydrogels prepared by solution casting method to address this issue. Chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay results indicated increased blood vessel count in CPB0.2 (

E-seed skin: a carbohydrate-protein hybrid nanostructure for delayed germination and accelerated growth.

The main purpose of the seed industry is to cater seeds with desired strength and viability, for which seed coating is a basic requirement. Herein, a hybrid coating of an electrosprayed protein (collagen) on electrospun nanofibers having a multidentate zinc-reinforced carbohydrate (pectin)/PVA composite (PVA/Pec/Zn/Col-NF) was developed. The zinc ensured covalent binding with the -OH in pectin/PVA in addition to the native galvanic binding between the polymers. Along with this, hydrogen bonding interactions between the -NH2 groups of electrosprayed collagen and the -OH groups in PVA/pectin fur

A spider silk-inspired, transparent, anti-freezing ionic conductive hydrogel as a flexible sensor device.

As soft material ionic conductors, ionically conductive hydrogels are of great significance for the development of flexible electronics. However, it is still a great challenge to effectively design functional hydrogel structures to address various practical application scenarios (such as low temperature environments) and expand their application range (such as transparent display devices). In this paper, an anti-bacterial and ionically conductive TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber/polyvinyl alcohol/quaternary ammonium chitosan/Al3+ (CPQA-EH) hydrogel (conductivity of 7.50 ms cm-1) with high tr…

Designing Oral Films Based on Beeswax: Comparative Assessment of 3D Printing and Solvent Casting.

BACKGROUND: From the perspective of drug delivery systems, oral films (OFs) have received increased attention, mainly for pediatric and geriatric applications. Beeswax, a naturally derived and FDA-approved material, is often mixed with other polymers to enhance its mechanical properties. This study presented the first use of precisely controlled, solvent-free pressure-assisted micro-syringe printing to produce OFs. METHODS: Solvent casting and pressure-assisted micro-syringe printing were employed to produce hybrid film structures composed of beeswax, polyvinyl alcohol, borax, and hydroxyprop…

In Situ Assembly of Bilayer Hydrogels by Templated Enzymatic Polymerization for Ultrahigh UV Absorption and Photothermal Transdermal Therapy.

Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is a principal cause of skin photodamage, leading to sunburn, photoaging, and skin cancers. Although numerous sunscreen materials have been developed, their performance remains limited by insufficient ultraviolet protection, low biosafety due to skin penetration of ultraviolet filters, poor skin adhesion, and a lack of therapeutic capacity for damaged tissues. Here a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based bilayer hydrogel fabricated by in situ assembly is reported. During gelation, interpenetration and cross-linking of PVA chains at the interface fuse the two layers …

Construction of PVA/OHA-Gs@PTMC/PHA double-layer nanofiber flexible scaffold with antibacterial function for tension free rectal in-situ reconstruction.

The effective prevention and treatment of anastomotic leakage after intestinal anastomosis for colorectal diseases is still a major clinical challenge. In order to assist intestinal anastomosis healing and avoid anastomotic leakage caused by high tension, low blood supply or infection, we designed a double-layer nanofiber intestinal anastomosis scaffold, which was composed of electrospun PTMC/PHA nanofibers as the main layer, and electrospun PVA/OHA-Gs nanofibers with antibacterial properties as the antibacterial surface layer. This double-layer scaffold has good toughness, its maximum tensile

Highly Sensitive Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on a Multicross-Linked Dual-Network Ionic Hydrogel for Blood Pressure Monitoring Applications.

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors based on ionic hydrogels (IHs) have garnered significant attention in the field of wearable technology. However, the vulnerability of traditional single-network hydrogels to mechanical damage and the complexity associated with preparing double-network hydrogels present challenges in developing a highly sensitive, easily prepared, and durable IH-based flexible capacitive pressure sensor. This study introduces a novel multicross-linked dual-network IH achieved through the physical and chemical cross-linking of polymers polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS…

Strong, tough and anisotropic bioinspired hydrogels.

Soft materials are widely used in tissue engineering, soft robots, wearable electronics, etc. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate soft materials, such as hydrogels, with both high strength and toughness that are comparable to biological tissues. Inspired by the anisotropic structure of biological tissues, a novel solvent-exchange-assisted wet-stretching strategy is proposed to prepare anisotropic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels by tuning the macromolecular chain movement and optimizing the polymer network. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms are found to be "macromolecule crys…

Strong and anti-swelling nanofibrous hydrogel composites inspired by biological tissue for amphibious motion sensors.

Conductive hydrogel-based sensors are increasingly favored for flexible electronics due to their skin-like characteristics. However, conventional hydrogels suffer from significant swelling in humid environments and poor mechanical properties which largely restrict their applications in wearable electronic devices, especially for underwater sensing. Herein, drawing inspiration from the extracellular matrix (ECM) structure, a TPU-PVAc@AgNPs/MXene nanofibrous hydrogel composite (TPAMH) with excellent mechanical robustness and anti-swelling properties is developed. The TPAMH nanofibrous hydrogel c

Comparative analysis of very volatile organic compounds and odors released from decorative medium density fiberboard using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and olfactory detection.

VVOCs with a retention range below C6 have become one of the main indoor pollutants that negatively affect human health. Most studies have focused on the emission of VOCs from furniture and decorative materials, seldom consider VVOCs. To close this gap, a 15-L environmental chamber, combined with multi-absorbent tube, was used for gas sampling. Emissions of VVOCs and odors released from decorative medium density fiberboard (MDF) were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and olfactometry detection. The results demonstrated that multi-absorbent tubes had excellent capture capacity

Evaluation of a novel chitosan polymer-based adsorbent for the removal of chromium (III) in aqueous solutions.

Novel poly(vinyl alcohol)/citric acid/chitosan (PVA/CA/CHT, PCC) beads were prepared as an adsorbent for the removal of trivalent chromium (Cr(3+)) in aqueous solutions. PCC beads with different mass ratios (I, II, III, IV, V, ad VI) between PVA/CA/CHT were evaluated for the removal of Cr(3+) ions to find an optimal stoichiometry of PCC beads, which indicated that the PCC bead (II) with the PVA/CA/CHT mass ratio of 1/5/1 showed the highest adsorption for Cr(3+) ions. The surface characteristics of PCC beads (II) were determined by scanning electron microscopy using a field emission scanning el
