INTRODUCTION: Swallowing difficulties, the pathophysiology behind which is incompletely understood, have been reported in 47-83% of goiter patients referred for thyroidectomy. We aimed at examining the influence of thyroid surgery on swallowing symptoms and esophageal motility.
METHODS: Thirty-three patients with benign nodular goiter undergoing thyroid surgery were included. All completed high-resolution esophageal manometry examinations and the goiter symptom scale score, assessed by the thyroid-specific patient-reported outcome measure. The evaluations were performed before and 6 months af

Social determinants of health have been widely studied throughout medicine; however, their role relating to functional rhinoplasty has not been previously evaluated. The records of 178 patients who underwent functional rhinoplasty in a single health network from 2013 to 2016 were reviewed. The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) score was used to assess patient-reported symptoms, and patients with both preoperative and postoperative NOSE scores were included in this study. Basic demographics and surgical techniques were also collected. Differences between NOSE scores and surgical appro

It is of great clinical importance to identify simple prognostic markers from preoperative biopsies that could guide treatment planning. Here, we compared tumor budding (B), depth of invasion (D), and the combined scores (i.e., budding and depth of invasion (BD) histopathologic model) in preoperative biopsies and the corresponding postoperative specimens of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). Tumor budding and depth of invasion were evaluated in the pre- and postoperative samples from 100 patients treated for OTSCC. Sensitivity and specificity statistics were used. Our results showed

BACKGROUND: Falls are common and linked to morbidity. Our objectives were to characterize postoperative falls, and determine whether preoperative falls independently predicted postoperative falls (primary outcome), functional dependence, quality of life, complications, and readmission.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 7982 unselected patients undergoing elective surgery. Data were collected from the medical record, a baseline survey, and follow-up surveys approximately 30days and one year after surgery.
RESULTS: Fall rates (per 100 person-years) peaked at 175 (hospitalization)

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with idiopathic subglottic stenosis (SGS) are at risk for voice disorders prior to and following surgical management. This study examined the nature and severity of voice disorders in patients with SGS before and after a revised cricotracheal resection (CTR) procedure designed to minimize adverse effects on voice function.
METHOD: Eleven women with idiopathic SGS provided presurgical and postsurgical audio recordings. Voice Handicap Index (VHI) scores were also collected. Cepstral, signal-to-noise, periodicity, and fundamental frequency (F0 ) analyses were undertaken

PURPOSE: To compare specular microscopy (Topcon SP-3000P, Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and ultrasound (US) technology when evaluating central corneal thickness (CCT) prior to and after phacoemulsification.
METHODS: Corneal edema was assessed in phacoemulsification patients due to senile cataract by measuring CCT preoperatively and 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to assess interchangeability between pachymetry techniques for each visit. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate variation in CCT agreement depending on

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to access upper airway obstruction in patients undergoing tonsillectomy by measuring peak oral and nasal inspiratory airflow.
METHODS: We recruited study participants from a cohort of patients on the waiting list for tonsillectomy, with or without adenoidectomy, at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, UK. Fifty patients enrolled on phase I of the study and underwent pre-operative measurement of the rate of peak oral and nasal inspiratory flow; 25 of these patients returned after one month for phase II of the study and underwent post-operative measurement of the rate of

OBJECTIVE: To validate a preoperative predictive score of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). Other risk factors for POPF were sought in an attempt to improve the score.
BACKGROUND: POPF is the major contributor to morbidity after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). A preoperative score [using body mass index (BMI) and pancreatic duct width] to predict POPF was tested upon a multicenter patient cohort to assess its performance.
METHODS: Patients undergoing PD at 8 UK centers were identified. The association between the score and other pre-, intra-, and postoperative variables with POPF was as

BACKGROUND: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (P-PCI) is the gold standard treatment for acute coronary syndromes. Plasma levels of catecholamines and other vasopressors are elevated during acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and coronary vasoconstriction is frequent. We aimed to compare the reference vessel diameter (RVD) of the infarct-related artery (IRA) during primary PCI and after an average of 3 days.
METHODS: Coronary angiography (CAG) was performed on 58 patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and TIMI 3 flow after P-PCI (43 men, 15 women; mean a

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate baseline health-related quality of life (HRQL) factors that influence short-term outcome after oesophagectomy for cancer of the oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal junction and the effects of postoperative length of hospital stay on postoperative HRQL, as perceived by the patients themselves.
METHODS: Four hundred and fifty-five patients operated on with curative intent between January 2005 and December 2009 were analysed. HRQL scores were obtained by European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ)-C30 and oesophageal-specif

BACKGROUND: Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) implantation in the perioperative period of cardiac surgery is an auxiliary treatment for cardiogenic shock. However, there is a lack of effective prediction models for preoperative IABP implantation.
OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to build machine learning algorithm-based models for early predicting risk factors of preoperative IABP implantation in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery.
METHODS: Patients undergoing CABG were retrospectively enrolled from the hospital between January 2015 and March 2024 and div

OBJECTIVE(S): Anesthesia-related postoperative complications, including prolonged mechanical ventilation, reintubation, and extended intensive care unit stay, remain significant concerns after congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery in children. This study was designed to evaluate whether the preoperative gamma-glutamyl transferase-to-albumin ratio (logGAR), which reflects oxidative stress, inflammation, and nutritional status, can predict anesthesia-related complications in pediatric CHD patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Single-center, pediatric cardiac surgery unit.
