Power profiles of 3-addition multifocal soft contact lens system.

SIGNIFICANCE: Simultaneous vision multifocal lens wearers face visual compromise from multiple optics covering the pupil. Modified monovision designs mitigate this by biasing eyes for distance/reading vision. Understanding designer-created bias from over/under correction, as presented in this paper with MyDay, helps practitioners assess contributions from refractive blur on wearer-reported visual symptoms. PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the in-vitro power profile of a new multifocal contact lens with 3 addition powers utilizing a modified monovision approach (MyDay multifocal, C

Distance spectacle-wearing habits in older patients in England.

PURPOSE: To report the proportion of older people in England who wear distance spectacles full time, part time and rarely, and to investigate factors that influence how much the distance vision (DV) correction is worn. METHODS: A two-part questionnaire investigating the spectacle-wearing habits of older people was developed and completed by 322 participants (age 72 years ±7.7, range 60-94). A subcohort of 209 DV correction wearers with a mean spherical equivalent (MSE) of <±4.00DS was selected for a logistic regression to investigate which factors influence how much the DV correction is used.

Subjective refraction using power vectors by updating a conventional phoropter with a Stokes lens for continuous astigmatic power generation.

PURPOSE: To implement a pure power vector method for monocular subjective refraction using a regular phoropter with the only modification being the inclusion of a Stokes lens. The proposed methodology was tested with three different Stokes lenses, and the results were compared with conventional clinical refraction procedures. METHODS: Power vector subjective refraction was performed by attaching a Stokes lens to the Risley prism holder. Stokes lenses allow for pure astigmatic compensation in the form of the J0 , J45 components while the spherical lenses in the phoropter allow determination of

Early Detection of Refractive Errors by Photorefraction at School Age.

Early detection and treatment of refractive defects during school age are essential to avoid irreversible future vision loss and potential school problems. Previously, vision screening of preschool children used methods based on subjective visual acuity; however, technologies such as photorefraction have promoted the detection of refractive errors quickly and easily. In this study, 1347 children from 10 schools in Madrid aged 4 to 12 years participated in a program of early detection of visual problems, which consisted of visual screening composed of anamnesis and photorefraction with a PlusOp

Open versus closed view autorefraction in young adults.

PURPOSE: While there are numerous studies comparing open-view autorefractors to subjective refraction or other open-view autorefractors, most studies between closed and open-view autorefraction tend to focus on children rather than young adults. The aim of this study was to determine the concordance in non-cycloplegic refractive error between two modern objective autorefractors: the closed-view monocular Topcon TRK-2P and the binocular open-view Grand Seiko WR-5500. METHODS: Fifty young adults aged 20-29 years (mean age 22 ± 1.6 years) underwent non-cycloplegic autorefraction using the Grand

Blue Light Protects Against Temporal Frequency Sensitive Refractive Changes.

PURPOSE: Time spent outdoors is protective against myopia. The outdoors allows exposure to short-wavelength (blue light) rich sunlight, while indoor illuminants can be deficient at short-wavelengths. In the current experiment, we investigate the role of blue light, and temporal sensitivity, in the emmetropization response. METHODS: Five-day-old chicks were exposed to sinusoidal luminance modulation of white light (with blue; N = 82) or yellow light (without blue; N = 83) at 80% contrast, at one of six temporal frequencies: 0, 0.2, 1, 2, 5, 10 Hz daily for 3 days. Mean illumination was 680 lux

Is refraction with a hand-held autorefractometer useful in addition to visual acuity testing and questionnaires in preschool vision screening at 3.5 years in Japan?

The vision-screening program for 3.5-year-old children in Japan consists of 3 steps:questionnaires and home visual acuity testing, visual acuity testing by nurses and inspection by medical officers at regional Public Health Centers, and examinations by ophthalmologists. In this study, we tested refraction with a hand-held autorefractometer in addition to visual acuity testing and inspection to reveal whether or not autorefraction leads to better detection of eye problems. Autorefraction was performed in 6 consecutive sessions by a single examiner in 265 children at 3.5 years of age who all vis

Aberration fields of a combination of plane symmetric systems.

By generalizing the wave aberration function to include plane symmetric systems, we describe the aberration fields for a combination of plane symmetric systems. The combined system aberration coefficients for the fields of spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, defocus and distortion depend on the individual aberration coefficients and the orientations of the individual plane symmetric component systems. The aberration coefficients can be used to calculate the locations of the field nodes for the different types of aberration, including coma, astigmatism, defocus and distortion. This work pr

Cycloplegic autorefraction results in pre-school children using the Nikon Retinomax Plus and the Welch Allyn SureSight.

PURPOSE: Early detection and treatment of amblyogenic conditions such as high refractive errors and anisometropia can help prevent the development of amblyopia. The traditional gold standard for the determination of refractive error in pre-school children is retinoscopy. Difficulties with retinoscopy in pre-school children have led to the development of autorefractors that can be free of operator bias and can be used by lay individuals. The Nikon Retinomax Plus handheld autorefractor has proven to be reliable for quick and accurate assessments of refractive errors in children. The Welch Allyn

Intraocular lens optics and aberrations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review outlines concepts in intraocular lens (IOL) optics and aberrations important both for current IOLs and for new IOLs in development. RECENT FINDINGS: Optical aberrations make a significant impact on the laboratory and clinical performance of IOLs, especially under mesopic and low-contrast conditions. Minimizing or correcting these aberrations can potentially improve visual function. Strategic management of aberrations can have clinical utility for extended depth of focus and presbyopia correction. SUMMARY: All IOLs affect ocular aberrations in some manner. It is
