There is still controversy surrounding the indications for performing either a retrograde ureteral stent or percutaneous nephrostomy to manage malignant extrinsic ureteral obstruction (MEUO). We retrospectively analyzed 53 patients who underwent a decompression of MEUO using retrograde ureteral stent. Ureteral stent failure occurred in 18 of 53 patients (34%). Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia constitutes the most common cause of severe thrombocytopenia in fetuses and neonates and of intracranial hemorrhage among term newborns. The cornerstone of therapy involves the use of steroids and intravenous immunoglobulins. Despite the risk of potentially devastating consequences to the fetus, fetal blood sampling has typically been used to document response to therapy. We propose a therapeutic algorithm based on risk stratification with individualized treatment optimization without the use of fetal blood sampling.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers form a heterogeneous group of tumours with varying recurrence and progression rates. Recently low-, intermediate- and high-risk categories, based on tumour stage and grade, have been used to predict prognosis and guide treatment. The mortality rate associated with Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) remains high. To identify clinical events associated with an increased risk of death among patients with S. aureus PVE and to evaluate the role of valve replacement surgery in reducing mortality, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who met strict criteria for definite S. aureus PVE.
