Determination of triglycerides with special emphasis on biosensors: a review.

Triglycerides (TG) are transesterification product of fatty acids and glycerol and engaged in the transportation of fats. Elevated triglyceride level is associated with coronary heart disease (CAD), atherosclerosis and hypolipoprotenemia. Convenient and reproducible assay systems based on enzymes are an attractive alternative to conventional analytical methods. Triglyceride biosensors (TGBs) are based on either measurement of oxygen consumed or electron generated from splitting of H2O2, an ultimate product, of immobilized enzymes. TGBs work optimally within 2-900 s, between pH 6.4-8.5 and the

Special locations dermoscopy: facial, acral, and nail.

Although dermoscopy reflects the anatomy, skin anatomy is different on facial and acral skin as well as in the nail unit. Malignant patterns on acral sites include the parallel ridge pattern and irregular diffuse pigmentation, whose presence should lead to a biopsy. Malignant patterns on the face include features of follicular invasion (signet-ring images, annular granular images, and rhomboidal structures) and atypical vessels. Malignant patterns on the nail unit include the micro-Hutchinson sign and irregular longitudinal lines.

Are there specialized circuits for social cognition and are they unique to humans?

Discussions of the neural underpinnings of social cognition frequently emphasize the distinctiveness of human social cognition. Here, however, we review the discovery of similar correlations between neural networks and social networks in humans and other primates. We suggest that component parts of these neural networks in dorsal frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and superior temporal sulcus (STS) are linked to basic social cognitive processes common to several primate species including monitoring the actions of others, assigning importance to others, and orienting behavior towa

Secretory immunity with special reference to the oral cavity.

The two principal antibody classes present in saliva are secretory IgA (SIgA) and IgG; the former is produced as dimeric IgA by local plasma cells (PCs) in the stroma of salivary glands and is transported through secretory epithelia by the polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), also named membrane secretory component (SC). Most IgG in saliva is derived from the blood circulation by passive leakage mainly via gingival crevicular epithelium, although some may be locally produced in the gingiva or salivary glands. Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) do n

Zoonoses from dogs with special reference to Egypt.

A zoonosis is an animal disease that is transmissible to humans. Humans are usually an accidental host that acquires disease through close contact with an infected animal, who may or may not be symptomatic. Children are at highest risk for infection because they are more likely to have close contact with pets. Dogs are responsible for transmission of an extensive array of bacterial and parasitic zoonotic pathogens. The route of transmission can be through the feces, urine, saliva (eg, bites or contaminated scratches), or respiratory secretions of the animal, or by the dog or cat acting as a ve

Adjuvant therapies for special types of breast cancer.

Recent developments in the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer include an increasing attention to systemic therapies prescribed in homogeneous groups of patients according to the higher chance of benefit. A clear consequence of the current adjuvant treatment strategy is the importance of accurate and reliable histopathological assessment. A proper pathological evaluation may effectively support the definition of prognosis and treatment choice in niches of patients diagnosed with special types of breast cancer. Through the identification of special types of breast cancer, that account for up to

Epithelial integrins with special reference to oral epithelia.

Adhesion of epithelium to the extracellular matrix is crucial for the maintenance of systemic and oral health. In the oral cavity, teeth or artificial dental implants penetrate the soft tissue of the gingiva. In this interface, gingival soft tissue needs to be well attached via the epithelial seal to the tooth or implant surface to maintain health. After injury or wounding, epithelial tissue rapidly migrates to form the initial epithelial cover to restore the barrier against infection. These events are crucially dependent on deposition of extracellular matrix and proper activation and function

Diagnosis of tuberculosis: the experience at a specialized diagnostic laboratory.

This work describes the experience at a tuberculosis clinical laboratory where relatively new TB diagnosis technologies; nucleic acid detection of two target strands, IS6110 and devR, by PCR and microscopic observation drug susceptibility (MODS) were used. The LJ culture was the gold standard. This evaluation was done from August 2007 to July 2009 on 463 sputum samples of tuberculosis suspects at a specialized tuberculosis clinic in Delhi, India.None of the tests we evaluated can accurately detect the presence or absence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in all the samples and smear microscopy was

Excipients with specialized functions for effective drug delivery.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing need for the development of pharmaceutical excipients that could improve product performance and overcome the shortcomings of new drug moieties, such as their poor solubility and membrane permeability, as well as to aid with modern manufacturing processes. AREAS COVERED: Different types of functional excipients are discussed in this paper, in terms of their roles in modern dosage forms to optimize drug delivery and manufacturability. Functions of specialized excipients that are covered in this article include the enhancement of drug membrane permeability, the

[Analgesia for pediatric patients. Standards and special aspects].

UNLABELLED: In this paper we describe the assessment and medical treatment of pain in children according to the concept of the Centre of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the university of Freiburg, Germany. Opiate therapy in children as well as novel data about the association of paracetamol (acetaminophen) and wheezing/asthma bronchiale in children are discussed. Special aspects of analgesia for painful procedures and a nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture which has been recently introduced in Germany are described. The second part of the paper presents results of our prospective study about con

Sodium recommendations for special populations and the resulting implications.

Based on the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans, sodium recommendations are set at 2,300 mg for the general population and 1,500 mg for special populations. However, sodium intake among adults has been shown to be much higher than this; on average 3,436 mg. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that special populations (those with hypertension, African Americans, and those 40 years of age and older) make up 70% of adults in the United States. Excess sodium in the diet has been shown to contribute to problems such as blood pressure abnormalities, kidney function problem

Optimizing immunization in pediatric special risk groups.

This article analyzes the current recommended practices and evidence in the immunization of pediatric 'special risk groups'. Special risk group patients are at higher risk of vaccine-preventable diseases and hence require additional strategies to maximize protection against these diseases. The special risk groups include those with an underlying chronic disease, some of whom are on immunosuppressive therapy to treat that condition. The article uses four special risk groups (acute lymphoblastic leukemia; preterm birth; juvenile idiopathic arthritis; and inflammatory bowel disease), to highlight

Developmental disorders of language and literacy: special issue.

Language and literacy are cognitive skills of exceptional complexity. It is therefore not surprising that they are at risk of impairment either during development or as a result of damage (e.g. stroke) later in life. Impaired language and literacy can arise from a general learning impairment. However, two developmental disorders, specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia, which affect oral and written language, respectively, are 'specific' in that they are not part of a more general learning difficulty. SLI and dyslexia each affect 5-10% of the general population, and they are the focus

[Postoperative sepsis: diagnosis, special features, management].

A high level of suspicion is necessary to detect postoperative sepsis in good time. It may be difficult to differentiate sepsis from normal SIRS in the postoperative setting. Early signs and symptoms include delirium and respiratory compromise. These should trigger the search for a septic focus aggressively with special attention to the original site of surgery. Key recommendations include early goal-directed resuscitation of the septic patient, administration of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy within 1 hour of diagnosis, and source control with attention to the balance of risks and benefits

Introduction to the special series on motivational interviewing and psychotherapy.

Clinical and research applications of motivational interviewing (MI) have grown at a remarkable pace over the past 25 years. Most of this work has targeted the addictions and health-related behaviors. The series of articles in this issue highlight a rapidly accelerating recent trend: the application of MI to other problems typically seen in clinical practice. This introductory article describes MI, its core principles, treatment methods, and the variety of ways in which it has been employed. The 6 case reports in this issue are then described. They illustrate how MI can be employed with genera
