Changes in cross-sectional area of spinal canal and vertebral body under 2 years of teriparatide treatment: results from the EUROFORS study.

The treatment of osteoporotic patients with teriparatide is associated with a significant increase in bone formation and gain of bone mass. The purpose of this post hoc analysis was to determine if the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the spinal canal and the vertebral body is affected by teriparatide treatment. Narrowing of the spinal canal might represent a safety problem, while widening of the vertebral CSA might improve mechanical stability. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans of vertebra T12 were obtained at baseline and after 6, 12, and 24 months of teriparatide treatment (20 m…

[Occult lumbar vertebral body metastasis of non-seminomatous germ cell tumor eradicated by radiation and salvage surgery 9 years after initial onset].

In this report we describe a case of late relapse non-seminomatous germ cell tumor eradicated after 9 years of initial onset. A 20-year-old man complaining of recent aches, vomiting and headaches was diagnosed with right testicular tumor with solitary brain and bilateral lung metastases. At presentation, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) was elevated to 22,000 mIU/ml, and alpha-fetoprotein to 79 ng/ml. A right high orchiectomy was performed, followed by a right occipital osteoplastic craniotomy due to the presence of left hemiplesia and anisocoria prior to chemotherapy. Pathologically, the tu

Comparison of rostral spread of lumbosacral epidural volume calculated by body weight or length of the vertebral column in small-sized anesthetized dogs.

The first objective of this prospective, randomized, crossover experimental trial was to compare the rostral spread of lumbosacral epidural volume calculated by body weight (BW) or vertebral column length (LE) in 6 small, isoflurane-anesthetized female beagle dogs (BW: 7.5 to 10.2 kg; LE measured from the occipital crest to the sacrococcygeal space: 46 to 56 cm). The second objective was to assess the response to a noxious stimulus once the dogs recovered from anesthesia and to determine the effects of the injection on cardiopulmonary variables. While in sternal position, dogs were injected th

Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering for Skeletally Immature Patients with AIS: Indication for Spinal Fusion at Skeletal Maturity Is Not Obviated in 60% of Cases.

The role of anterior vertebral body tethering (aVBT) in obviating the need for spinal fusion in patients with AIS remains unclear, and a large amount of variation exists in the data among different studies. The present study aims to investigate and analyze what factors have a potential influence on aVBT outcome. Skeletally immature patients with AIS who underwent aVBT for scoliosis correction were followed up until skeletal maturity. The mean age at the time of surgery was 13.4 ± 1.1, and the mean follow-up time was 2.5 ± 0.5 years. The Cobb angle of the main curve was 46.6 ± 9° at the time of…

Unexpected Vertebral Bodies Trapping of 99mTc-Macroaggregated Albumin During Lung Perfusion Scintigraphy in a Patient With Collateral Paravertebral Venous System.

A 35-year-old woman was referred to our nuclear medicine center for a ventilation and perfusion (VQ) pulmonary scintigraphy to detect pulmonary embolism. She was treated with low-molecular-weight heparin following a proximal venous thrombosis of the right upper limb and had a previous history of an infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the right breast. Surprisingly, the VQ scintigraphy showed uptake of 99mTc-MAA in several superior vertebrae. A contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a dilated collateral paravertebral venous system due to the deep vein thrombosis extended from superior vena cava to bra

Lumbar muscle and vertebral bodies segmentation of chemical shift encoding-based water-fat MRI: the reference database MyoSegmenTUM spine.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for diagnosing and monitoring muscular tissue pathologies and bone marrow alterations in the context of lower back pain, neuromuscular diseases and osteoporosis. Chemical shift encoding-based water-fat MRI allows for reliable determination of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) of the muscle and bone marrow. Prior to quantitative data extraction, segmentation of the examined structures is needed. Performed manually, the segmentation process is time consuming and therefore limiting the clinical applicability. Thus, the develo

Finite element analysis predicts experimental failure patterns in vertebral bodies loaded via intervertebral discs up to large deformation.

Vertebral compression fractures are becoming increasingly common. Patient-specific nonlinear finite element (FE) models have shown promise in predicting yield strength and damage pattern but have not been experimentally validated for clinically relevant vertebral fractures, which involve loading through intervertebral discs with varying degrees of degeneration up to large compressive strains. Therefore, stepwise axial compression was applied in vitro on segments and performed in silico on their FE equivalents using a nonlocal damage-plastic model including densification at large compression fo

Rostral truncation of a cyclostome, Lampetra japonica, induced by all-trans retinoic acid defines the head/trunk interface of the vertebrate body.

The effect of all-trans retinoic acid on embryogenesis was studied in a cyclostome, Lampetra japonica. Treatment with 0.05-0.5 microM retinoic acid on early gastrula and early neurula resulted in loss of the pharynx and in the rostral truncation of the neural tube. The mouth, pharynx, esophagus, heart, endostyle, and rostral brain were missing with graded severity. In the severest case, the embryo consisted only of trunk segments, especially myotomes that extended to the rostral end of the axis. The effect appeared to be dose- and stage-dependent: Rostral pharyngeal arches were more vulnerable
