Hypopharyngeal stenosis is a frequent complication of laryngectomy and radiotherapy in patients treated for carcinoma. In a retrospective study of patients treated in the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, hypopharyngeal stenosis was more frequent after laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy than after laryngectomy alone and occurred more commonly in lesions of the pyriform fossa than in glottic tumors. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine variations in the incidence rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs; i.e., chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) across the urban-rural and area-deprivation continua from January of 2013 to December of 2018 in Yakima County, Washington. Babesiosis is a tick-borne illness endemic to the coastal areas of southern New England. Despite the enormous safety measures that transfusion and blood bank services perform for each product, transfusion of blood products is not without risk. The majority of transfusion-related reactions and complications are recognized soon after transfusion. We report a case of transfusion-acquired babesiosis in Washington State that presented 4 weeks after transfusion of a blood product from a donor living in a babesiosis-endemic area.

Pathological changes in eyes containing intraocular lenses were studied in the 28 specimens which constitute the collection of eyes with intraocular lenses at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Except for an occasional nest of lymphocytes, local areas of tissue thinning and fibrous reaction where there had been tissue compression, the striking finding in these eyes has been the lack of pathological response. Most of them showed a significant loss of endothelial cells but none had clinical corneal dystrophy.
