Benign adenoidal hypertrophy is the most common cause of nasopharyngeal obstruction. However, depending on size and location, masses may cause nasopharyngeal obstruction. We present our experiences with a ten-year-old female who presented with what appeared to be a large nasopharyngeal mass that was initially favored to be malignant and was ultimately found to be adenoid hypertrophy related to acute infection with adenovirus.

Our objective was to assess the presence of three polyomaviruses, namely SV40, JCPyV, and BKPyV, and human papillomaviruses (HPV) in adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) of the minor salivary glands (MiSG) in the head and neck region. The study comprised 68 MiSG ACC patients operated during 1974-2012 at the Helsinki University Hospital (Helsinki, Finland). Medical records and 68 histological samples were reviewed. Polyomaviruses were detected with quantitative PCR and the DNA-positive samples were further analyzed for the presence of viral tumor T antigen (T-ag) with immunohistochemistry. HPV genot

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the trachea is a relatively rare tumor among thoracic diseases. The present study reports the case of a 23-year-old woman with ACC of the trachea who underwent surgical resection of the tumor in The National Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (Warsaw, Poland). Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was not completely resected (R2 resection) and strict observation of the patient was therefore prescribed. After ~9 years of follow-up, clinical and histopathological tumor progression was confirmed and the patient was referred to the Centre

PURPOSE: Bronchogenicadenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignancy particularly challenging to irradiate, largely owing to anatomic location and associated toxicities. Proton beam therapy (PBT) can reduce doses to nearby organs at risk, but only one case report has been published detailing PBT for this neoplasm.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was an institutional review board-approved retrospective chart review of all patients at one institution with bronchogenic ACC treated with PBT. Toxicities were assessed per Common Toxicity Criteria for Adverse Events, version 4.0.
RESULTS: Five

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a locally aggressive salivary gland malignancy prone to perineural invasion and local recurrences. In the literature, few data exist to guide treatment when this tumor involves the paranasal sinuses and skull base. We report our experience in the management of sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma through an endoscopic endonasal approach.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients affected by sinonasal ACC treated through an endoscopic endonasal approach from 1997 to 2015, managed at the Universities of Varese and Brescia, Italy.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm composed of basaloid epithelial and myoepithelial cells. The palate is the most commonly involved intraoral site for ACC. Here, we document the case of an advanced ACC arising from the hard palate that presented with right-sided sixth nerve palsy in a 75-year-old male with no other systemic illnesses. ACC of the head and neck involving the cavernous sinus and presenting as isolated sixth nerve palsy is exceedingly rare. In the absence of vasculopathic or ischemic risk factors, regardless of the age of the patient; neuroimaging sh

RATIONALE: Garcin syndrome is characterized by the gradual involvement, and ultimately, unilateral paralysis of at least 7 and sometimes all cranial nerves, without intracranial hypertension or any long tract signs.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a 59-year-old woman who presented with Garcin syndrome, which gradually progressed over a period of 2 years.
DIAGNOSIS: A left parotid gland biopsy revealed parotid gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (PGACC) with perineural invasion of a peripheral nerve bundle and lymph node metastasis.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated 3 times with loca

AIM: To report a rare presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lacrimal gland.
METHOD: This is a case report presenting clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings.
RESULTS: A 72-year-old female with no reported ocular symptoms was found to have an incidental right orbital mass on imaging. Additional studies revealed multiple liver lesions, which were biopsied and found to be consistent with ACC. She was then referred to the ophthalmology service, where ocular examination demonstrated 2.5 mm of right proptosis with elevation and abduction deficits. Diplopia could be eli

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the larynx and trachea is very rare.
CASE: A 45-year-old man with ACC of the larynx presenting as a thyroid mass is reported in this study. Physical examination revealed a large solid thyroid nodule in the left lobe without any lymphadenopathy. A technetium thyroid scan showed multinodular goiter with cold nodules in the left lobe, isthmus, and functioning nodules in the right lobe. A large thyroid mass originating from the left side of the larynx, mostly the left vocal cord and the infraglottic part, was seen using enhanced magnetic resonance ima

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slowly growing malignant neoplasm with a propensity for perineural invasion. Microscopic invasion of ACC often prevents its detection on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We herein report a rare case of sublingual ACC presenting as a "skip lesion" that rapidly infiltrated the mandible after tumor resection. A 64-year-old man presented to Okayama University Hospital with an 18-month history of swelling in the right floor of the mouth. Clinical examination displayed an ulcerated swollen mass in that region. An enhanced mass was dete

Primary malignant tumors of the lacrimal passage, particularly of the nasolacrimal duct, are rare. We describe a 72-year-old woman who presented with lacrimation 5 years previously. She had pain and bloody and purulent lacrimation, and a mass was identified in the inferior meatus. Accordingly, she was diagnosed with primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasolacrimal duct. She was treated with proton beam therapy and showed a favorable response. Owing to the long-term risks of recurrence and distant metastasis, adenoid cystic carcinoma requires sufficient follow-up.

AIMS: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lower respiratory tract is a rare indolent neoplasm with prolonged survival, propensity for recurrences and metastasis years after initial therapy. We aim to study a 1,700-bed single tertiary academic hospital's long-term experience with ACC of the lower respiratory tract from the larynx to the lungs and review published literature on this subject.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed the clinicopathology, treatment options and outcome in 33 patients and reviewed the published literature over the last five decades.
RESULTS: The tumour has no gender predile
