Seven cases of bilateral, scattered, yellow-white choroidal lesions have been seen in AIDS patients since January 1988. One resulted from presumed extension of cryptococcal meningitis into the optic nerve and choroid. All the remaining six patients had pneumocystis pneumonia at some time during the course of the disease and were receiving aerosolised pentamidine therapy. None died quickly of disseminated Pneumocystis carinii infection, unlike previously reported patients. Mycobacterial infection was also present in five of these six patients. The differential diagnosis of this entity in AIDS p…

This is the first report of an amelanotic melanoma arising in the unpigmented choroid of a tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albino (TPOCA). Melanosomes within the tumour showed a maturation arrest in the unpigmented type II (premelanosome) phase. Other neural crest derived melanocytes in iris and choroid showed similar limited melanogenesis. The neuroectodermally derived melanocytes of the iris, ciliary body, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) contained mature melanosomes, though clinically the RPE was pale. The significance of this tumour arising in an albinotic eye is discussed.

The ocular pathologic findings were determined in a case of fatal infantile periarteritis nodosa (IPN). To our knowledge, this case is the first histologically documented report of choroidal inflammation associated with this disease. Since the clinical and pathologic findings of IPN and Kawasaki's disease (KD) are identical, these findings should be sought in cases of KD.

Three members of a family with central areolar choroidal dystrophy showed the early and late stages of this disorder. The youngest affected was a 12-year-old girl who exhibited decreased vision, a red-green dyschromatopsia, and mild granularity of the macula with a diffuse foveal reflex. A discrete focal loss of choriocapillaris in the macula was seen on fluorescein angiography. This indicates that choriocapillaris atrophy is an early finding in this disease.

Regadless of the etiology of the disciform lesion in the presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome, and regardless of our ignorance as to whether the pathogenetic mechanism relates in part to hypersensitization, or can be explained solely on a mechanistic interpretation (that is, chronic vascular decompensation [9]), the question of therapy can be evaluated independently. However, our knowledge regarding the natural history of these lesions is similarly incomplete and thus, without a controlled study, e cannot compare any of the therapeutic modalities with the natural history. Therefore, we cann

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and prognostic factors of macular serpiginous choroiditis (SC) and macular serpiginous-like choroiditis (SLC).
METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study included 30 eyes of 25 patients with macular SC or SLC. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic evaluation, including OCT, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and fluorescein angiography. Atrophic and hyperautofluorescent FAF areas were quantitatively assessed using ImageJ.
RESULTS: Of the 30 eyes, 16 had macular SC and 14 had macular SLC. Atrophic area increased signi…

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) on the choroidal tissue, which has a dense vascular network in the eye. A total of 95 eyes of 45 children diagnosed with FMF with homozygous c.~ (p.M694V) mutation in the MEFV gene and 50 healthy children were included in this prospective cross-sectional study. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were obtained from all children. Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and nasal CT values were significantly lower in the patient group compared to the healthy group (p =…

BACKGROUND: To compare the choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) values in ocular rosacea (OR) patients across skin subtypes of the disease and healthy controls.
METHODS: This prospective study included 90 eyes of 90 mild-moderate OR patients with different skin subtypes (30 phymatous, 30 papulopustular and 30 erythematotelangiectatic) and 30 eyes of 30 age-gender matched healthy volunteers. After obtaining the enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography images, the CT was measured at subfoveal, 1500 μm nasal and 1500 μm temporal to the fovea, and the CVI was …
