A review of branched-chain amino acids in lactation diets on sow and litter growth performance.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are three essential amino acids (AA) for lactating sows; however, the effects of dietary Leu, Val, and Ile … , dietary modifications that mitigate BCAA competition may positively influence Val utilization for colostrum and milk synthesis. Little data exist on Ile and Leu requirements for modern lactating sows. Although Val requirements have been extensively researched in the last 25 yr, an ideal Val:Lys has not been consistently established across experiments. Som …

A new passive immune strategy based on IgY antibodies as a key element to control neonatal calf diarrhea in dairy farms.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal diarrhea remains one of the main causes of morbi-mortality in dairy calves under artificial rearing. It is often caused by infectious agents of viral, bacterial, or parasitic origin. Cows vaccination and colostrum intake by calves during the first 6 h of life are critical strategies to prevent severe diarrhea but these are still insufficient. Here we report the field evaluation of a product based on IgY antibodies against group A rotavirus (RVA), coronavirus (CoV), enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, and Salmonella sp. This product, named IgY DNT, has been designed as a comp…

Maternal dietary supplementation with ferrous N-carbamylglycinate chelate affects sow reproductive performance and iron status of neonatal piglets.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a public health concern that frequently occurs in pregnant mammals and neonatal offspring. Ferrous N-carbamylglyci … from each selected litter was slaughtered within 3 h after birth from the selected litters, without colostrum ingestion. The serum, longissimus muscle, liver and kidneys of the piglets were collected. The iron status of the serum samples and the messenger RNA level of iron-related genes in the placenta, liver and kidney were analyzed. The results showed tha …

Some studies of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus infection in calves.

Six dairy calves, six and one-half to nine months old, were exposed to a strain of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus of bovine fetal origin by one of the various routes - nasal, vaginal, preputial or contact. Neither after initial exposure nor following challenge of their immunity did any of these animals manifest the IBR respiratory syndrome, although two of them (inoculated per vagina/prepuce) developed pustular vulvovaginitis or balanoposthitis. Also, one five-day old dairy calf which had received colostrum and milk of its IBR-immune dam, was inoculated intranasally with the sam…

Short communication: Validation of methods for practically evaluating failed passive transfer of immunity in calves arriving at a veal facility.

Providing a sufficient quantity of high-quality colostrum to male and female calves soon after birth is critical to reduce the risk of disease and mortality. Practical tests have not been validated to determine failed passive transfer of immunity upon arrival at veal facilities. There are many challenges to validation, including the lack of information on the age of the calf and the high prevalence of dehydration. The objective of this study was to validate a semiquantitative IgG antibody test using whole blood and a digital refractometer using serum to determine passive transfer of immunity s…

Proteomics as a tool to explore human milk in health and disease.

Proteins in milk have wide range of functions, they are carriers of minerals or chemically vulnerable and insoluble vitamins and other compounds, stabilisers of large aggregates or micelles of lipids, and components of both innate and acquired immune defence systems. Together with other components of milk, proteins may also contribute to the selection and establishment of appropriate microbiome in the gut of the infant. The proteome of mammalian milk is now known to be dynamic and changes radically with time after birth from colostrum to mature lactation. Significantly, immune and innate defen…

Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of recombinant adenovirus expressing a novel genotype G2b PEDV spike protein in protecting newborn piglets against PEDV.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly infectious and economically significant gastrointestinal disorder that affects pigs of all ages. Preventing and controlling PED is achieved by immunizing sows with vaccines, enabling passive piglet immunization via colostrum. The prevalence of G2b porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) continues in China despite the use of commercial vaccines, raising questions regarding current vaccine efficacy and the need for novel vaccine development. Adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) has several advantages, including high transduction efficiency, a wide range of host …

Pathogenesis of swine influenza virus subtype H1N2 infection in pigs.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate pathogenesis and viral distribution in pigs infected with swine influenza virus subtype H1N2, over a period of 10 days, by morphometric analysis and in-situ hybridization. Fifteen colostrum-deprived pigs aged 3 weeks were inoculated intranasally with virus. Pneumonia was severe at 1 day post-inoculation (dpi), moderate at 3 and 5 dpi, and mild at 7 and 10 dpi. The pulmonary lesion score was correlated with the score of cells positive by in-situ hybridization for swine influenza virus (r(s)= 0.9114, P< 0.05). The distribution of swine influenza virus v…

Physiological secretion of chemokines in human breast milk.

Human breast milk has been observed to contain high concentrations of the chemotactic cytokines (chemokines) interleukin-8 (IL-8) and RANTES. Concentrations are greatest in colostrum, but are measurable in milk after several months of lactation. These chemokines are also found in the secretions of patients with galactorrhoea and in the "witch's milk" of the newborn. Chemokine levels show good correlation with the sodium levels but not with cell counts or the creamatocrit of the secreted milk. Mothers with pre-term deliveries show no statistical difference in chemokine secretion in comparison w…

Azithromycin therapy for Cryptosporidium parvum infection in four children infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Cryptosporidium parvum intestinal infection in immunodeficient patients can cause severe intestinal fluid losses with severe dehydration or chronic diarrhea with malnutrition. Therapies tried in human beings and animals include paromomycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, octreotide, hyperimmune bovine colostrum, and bovine transfer factor. No specific therapy has been found to be consistently beneficial to children. We report azithromycin treatment of four children with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who had severe diarrheal illnesses in which Cryptosporidium parvum was the sole pathogen de…

[Effect of the copper status on the reproduction performance and the milk yield of cows in 2 copper-deficient locations. 2. Effect of copper deficiency on the reproduction performance and the milk yield of cows].

The influence of copper deficiency on the reproduction performance of cows has not often been investigated. In two habitats feeding cows with mineral mixtures rich in copper resulted in a significant reduction of the aperiodically extended sexual cycles. The beginning of the first visible symptoms of heat, the period between gravidities, the duration of gravidity, the birth weight of the calves and the Cu-content of the colostrum remained uninfluenced by Cu-supply. The liver weight increase of the calves from cows without Cu-supplement during gravidity was by 5% lower during the first 90 days …

Narrative Review of the Safety of Using Pigs for Xenotransplantation: Characteristics and Diagnostic Methods of Vertical Transmissible Viruses.

Amid the deepening imbalance in the supply and demand of allogeneic organs, xenotransplantation can be a practical alternative because it makes an unlimited supply of organs possible. However, to perform xenotransplantation on patients, the source animals to be used must be free from infectious agents. This requires the breeding of animals using assisted reproductive techniques, such as somatic cell nuclear transfer, embryo transfer, and cesarean section, without colostrum derived in designated pathogen-free (DPF) facilities. Most infectious agents can be removed from animals produced via thes…

Effects of Total Enteral Nutrition on Early Growth, Immunity, and Neuronal Development of Preterm Infants.

The feeding of colostrum and mother's transitional milk improves immune protection and neurodevelopmental outcomes. It also helps with gut maturation and decreases the risks of infection. The supply of nutrients from human milk (HM) is not adequate for preterm infants, even though preterm mother's milk contains higher concentrations of protein, sodium, zinc, and calcium than mature HM. The human milk fortifiers, particularly those with protein, calcium, and phosphate, should be used to supplement HM to meet the necessities of preterm infants. The management of fluid and electrolytes is a chall…
